I posted a comment about how short our days are at the moment on one of the weather threads, and it made me wonder how it compares in other parts of the world - or indeed in other parts of the UK...

Interesting point Lakatoi 4!

I was reading "day" as in Friday which today is 24 hours but you are talking "daylight" hours.

Maybe you are closer to the thread topic?

Cheers, Kev.

8:15 to 16:30 MEZ, so more than eight hours daylight on one of the shortest days of the year.

We're past the shortest day, but days are still more than short enough. Within the next few days, Sunset will be after 4:00pm and Sunrise will start moving back towards 8:00am.

Central Finland is quite dark right now as we have sunrise at 9:49am and sunset: 2:46pm.
Plenty of "beautiful dark days" to play with UV lamp.

Well, I know, 20 years ago I've been on the Lofote-Islands, Norway, north of the polar circle at New Years. There have been 20 hours darkness and no sun at all.

But I compared the short daylight periods in winter with the longer periods in summer, which I do like much more.
Low temperatures are no problem, but I need daylight before and after work.

Regards,

We get sunrise (I don't get up early) definitely before 7.00 a.m.- first light is probably at 6.30 a.m. and sunset is around 7.00 p.m. Guess we get longer days around the equator (about 4 degrees above the Equator).

Andrew, I think the length of your days will vary much less near the Equator between the shortest and the longest. Our shortest passed last month and we had WAY under 8 hours of daylight, but at the longest in June, we'll get over 18 hours (and the folks in Finland have an even more extreme difference).

For the record, today's sunrise was at 8:29am and sunset at 4:01pm (an extra 2 minutes over yesterday)

Hard to tell how long the day is. Sky is overcast, no real daylight. Snowfall last night and this morning. Dull, dark.

Yep, you've overtaken us with sunrise which is now at 7:20 here, but we are right at the western end of the time zone.

Sunset is now 6:53, so you've got a ways to go yet. :D :D :D

So, our days should be the same length at the Equinox (as should they anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere).

And after that, the further North, the quicker the days will get longer (if you see what I mean...).

Our days here are lengthening by 3-4 minutes per day at the moment, but that rate of increase will slow as we get closer to the Longest Day.

That's 22 more minutes daylight in just the last 5 days.

We now have > 11 hours of daylight, compared to <7½ hours at the shortest in late December.

And the rate of increase is now ~ 4 minutes per day, compared to ~1 minute per day at the solstice.

Chicago, Il. Sun March 7:

Sunrise 06:16
Sunset 17:48
Hours of Daylight 11h 32m 05s

That gives you a pretty long twilight period, Erik.

Don't forget, in the Northern Hemisphere, there CANNOT be more than 12 hours between sunrise and sunset until after the Equinox later this month

("Equinox" = "Equal Night")

However long your day is, it just got shorter, due to the recent earthquake activity:

Quote:
The U.S. space agency's Richard Gross used a complex mathematical model to simulate the earthquake's effect. He estimates that our days are now 0.00000126 seconds shorter than they were last week. That's 1.26 microseconds, or millionths of a second, and Gross says the change will be permanent.

Ours go forward in a couple more weeks - then we get a couple of weeks of driving straight into the sun going to work in the mornings. But the pay-off is we get "proper" evenings 8)
