The Townsville Courier Mail newspaper's football (both NRL and AFL) tipping chart has two lots of words of wisdom in relation to picking winners and Head versus Heart.
"Consider an NRL team's pre-season form before placing" your tip. versus "Nonsense!" pick one of "the QLD teams: Broncos, Cowboys & Titans" ; and
Picking in "the AFL requires a keen eye for players' form." versus "Don't listen to " your brain. Pick "the Lions in 2011". (Part quote here. I modified the reference to gambling).

I think I have used a bit of each!
