To all of my fellow Americans - Have a great and safe holiday. We'll be watching fireworks along Whitefish Bay this evening where it won't be dark until close to 11 PM.

I'm not an American, but any excuse to party.
So many firework displays in NY, don't know which one to watch.

Have done it in the past.
Landing at La Guardia on 4th July with fireworks going off - breathtaking. The rockets look so impressive from above.

Happy "Fourth" to you also. We'll be firing up the grill today.

Made a trip to the light house up there one summer after visiting Mackinac is. Nice country up your way. Kids lasted about 4 seconds swimming in the lake. Cold!

best to all,
patg

Happy Fourth everyone. We're staying inside, temp. is 103 outside. No fireworks for us, state hasn't had much rain, so we are on a no burn watch.

Hot dogs on the grill, and some blackberries fresh off our bushes, on ice cream :D

And no, not the same thing every year. This year I'm putting in a new toilet in our bathroom

Best o' the Best!

Britcollector I've never had okra knowingly, what does it taste like?

In celebrating the Fourth of July we had an idyllic day. The temperature at Whitefish Point barely hit 80F (27C) and with the breeze off the bay it was delightful. Four families (of the nine that can be present) from our little neighborhood got together and grilled bratwurst and hamburgers. Baked beans, coleslaw, pasta salad, tabouli (no idea how to spell that correctly, as I have seen many ways) and other stuff topped off the menu.

The gathering was hosted by Raan and Carol. Raan (named for a Scandinavian ancestor) is a fourth generation "local" his Great-great grandfather was the postman 150 years ago and often delivered the mail in winter via dogsled. Lots of great stories on the area. Carol is a transplant from Alabama and has taken to full-time life in northern Michigan with zeal, not missing the southern heat. Our neighbor Darlin and her two daughters Grace and Maggie live across the lane and spend more time at the place in the summer as her husband Rick and their son Ethan are working down state. Our newest neighbors Chris and Nova are owl-banders at the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory and have a strange sleep schedule as they are working from dusk to dawn usually.

As the evening set in some of us went off to town (Paradise, yes we live part of the year in Paradise) to watch the fireworks, while some (including Susan and me) walked out to the end of the pier.

From the pier (Whitefish Point Harbor) we could see the fireworks in Sault Ste. Marie (75 miles distant by road; but more like 15-20 miles across the bay), Brimley (60 miles), Paradise (11 miles) and the various private displays. What was even more spectacular was moonrise. From an orange glow, to an orange disk the Moon appeared just to the north of the fireworks. A spectacular end to a great day.

Thanks for listening to the tale from our little community in northern Michigan. And, BTW, regarding okra - fried is the way to go, or in gumbo (with lots of hot sauce), otherwise way too slimy for me.

Sounds idyllic!
We did a drive around the UP a couple of years ago - up from Chicago via Traverse City then up to Sault Ste. Marie, back to Munising and down to Wisconsin to make the round trip back to Chicago. Magic!

Couldn't do much yesterday (the 4th). Way too hot, about 100 degrees F. :(

Went to see family, but stayed in the air-conditioned apartment. :D

I'm not sure that okra tastes like anything else.

It is mainly a Southern US vegetable and was brought from Africa. You find it in many Louisiana style stews/soups such as gumbo which are derived from where many different inexpensive ingredients fed a lot of poor people.

It is also served fried, which is how we eat it. Cut into half inch pieces, breaded in cornmeal flour, then fried briefly in oil in a skillet.

Look up "Okra recipes" for a lot more info

Same weather here as temps hit 101 degrees F. Stayed in Pool most of day with hand wrapped tightly around Beer can. Buffalo Chicken on the grill and homemade Potato salad. Fireworks are saved for this weekend and I can't wait ! happy belated 4th to all.

I'm quite relieved to see that here at Whitefish we managed to "miss" the heatwave that has the entire mid-west it its awful grip.

Early afternoon and we are at a "toasty" 82F, but don't worry Whitefish Bay is a mere 400 feet distant. Actually, I can hear it calling... :D

Almost took a job interview in the upper peninsula one time. Looked it up on the internet and was told there was two seasons: snow and getting ready for snow.

Wife grew up in Battle Creek, didn't see a year without snow & three other seasons until she she moved to California when she was 20. She refuses to consider it for retirement.

So we have our four seasons here: drought, wildfires, rain & mudslides (with the occasional earthquake thrown in)

The temperate zone for our retirement location is now: Not too far North, not too far South, above the fog line (3000') & below the snow line (4000'). piece o' cake

Best to all,
pat
