Iis it really moving or just a visual illusion?

This is the oldest known illusion - From the Pericope of Henry II ~ 1025. The central pillar HAS to go behind the figures or it will obscure our view of them.

1. Hold your hands in front of you, at 20-30 cm distance from you, at eye level.
2. Point your index fingers against each other, leaving about 2 cm distance between them.
3. Now look "through" your fingers, into the distance behind them.
4. The sausage should appear now, and you can change its length by varying the distance between the finger tips.
5. For most observers, the sausage will look blurred, at least initially.
6. If you try to look at the sausage, it will disappear, it is only present if you look at something more distant than your fingers.
7. It helps if the background is rather homogenous and has a color very different from your fingers.

The red cogwheel rotates, but does it rotate smoothely?




Between stationary inner and outer cogwheels, a cogwheel rotates with constant velocity about its own center. It rotates partly behind the inner cogwheel and partly in front of the outer cogwheel, but at regular intervals, it precisely fills the space between the stationary cogwheels. At these moments, various motion and velocity illusions occur, for both the rotating cogwheel and the inner stationary cogwheel.

Scurralous, I believe those optical illustions that you put (according to the version I got) are to test whether you have some kind of tension or pressure, the more you have the more the picture tends to move. Also it supposedly has no effect on children but I don't know for sure.

It will probably not work for the blind unless they have some kind of extra sensory perception. Maybe it moves a little if you close one eye and look at it.

Yes Andrew eerily enough optical illusions tend not to work well for the blind unless they have a very good seeing eye dog with the ability to communicate the illusion...
Perhaps optical illusions should be also in Braille form?

That's a good one Scuzz. But it may not work for dogs...if they are see in colour...that's an interesting thought...what if they are also colour-blind.

Then they'd need an equally well trained seeing eye Goldfish

Do they offer it on ebay?

If you have extras perhaps we can swap or something.

1. Follow the movement of the rotating pink dot with your eyes. You will see only one color - Pink.

2. Now stare at the black "+" in the center, and the moving dot turns to green.

3. Now keep staring at the "+", and after a short time, all the pink dots disappear, and all you see is a rotating green dot!
