Are these the New Zealand stamp "Chambon Perforations"?

We all have and handle these from time to time. "Back of book", Revenues, "Cinderellas", duty stamps and all kinds of other stamp like labels. Discuss them all HERE!

Are these the New Zealand stamp "Chambon Perforations"?

Post by sherro »

Incredibly, I find myself missing this very common stamp from the set. Can anyone help?

Here are both types.

If you haven't found one yet, you can have the one on the left for free -- just email me your mailing address. The one on the right is the rare Chambon perf (note the tiny perf halfway down each side). That guy is $10 Australian if you want it as well.

Thanks Greg, email on the way!

I wasn't aware of the Chambon perf variety until you pointed it out. I have the 1d value with that perf. Which catalogue lists these? My SG doesn't.

Campbell Patterson lists it.

The ½d ($32), 1d ($19), 2d ($19), 3d ($19), 4d ($19), 6d ($28), and 8d ($32), come with that CHAMBON perforation.

Catalogue values are for mint copies, in NZ dollars.

Roly and or Greg.
Are there any different perforations in those stamps in question other than the one in question??
Very interested,

Just the Chambon -- the scan above shows the difference really clearly. Apparently some Chambons have the odd perf in the middle too thick rather than too thin, but all the ones I've seen have it too thin.

It's an easy variation to spot once you know to look for it. No gauge necessary at all.

Agreed, very simple to spot when you know what you're looking for!

How did this perf come about? I haven't seen anything else similar. Did the perforator do horizontal and half vertical with an overlap?

There was no overlap, which was the problem. The holes were supposed to line up exactly, and they didn't, resulting in the one narrow (or occasionally wide) perf. Presumably the perforator got it right some of the time -- it wouldn't be possible to spot those ones.

They are really rare in blocks.

They turn up often enough to make it worth looking for them. I found all but one value just looking through my "duplicates." It is obscure enough that you can be pretty sure no-one has been through any stock you may have to look for them.

Hi Greg

On going through my spares I found some holes only matched half way the other half points were in holes, others had holes slopeing different ways from middle of stamp.

I went searching and found a couple of the 3d and found a 8d in a bunch of stamps that was going for RM6 from a local dealer. A really lucky find. Will scan them later for confirmation here. Thanks for the information and happy hunting to those out there looking at their old N.Z. stamps.

Fascinating. Nice detective work Tony. Of course, as the article says, "in use for about six to eight weeks", meaning these things should be very scarce. Yet, a quick search by a number of boarders has turned up quite a number. I haven't checked mine yet!

That's quite a haul, lafarounou.

The one thing I don't understand about these is why there seem to be so many more with a thin perf than there are with a thick perf. Logic would suggest that there would be equal numbers of each.

Maybe the thin perf ones are just easier to spot?

SNAP Greg :)

The narrow ones are very much easier to spot. I have seen them so narrow it looks at first glance like a pulled perf except for the minutest wee pip of a perf in the middle.

Incidently, the most extreme examples command about 10% over the "normal" (what ever that may be ) ones.

Will admit was easier spotting the small perf.
I only picked the bigger ones that stood out, others were iffy,I wasn't going to split hairs over them.

You must be doing one stamp at a time ,what do you compair it to.
Look at my 1st post, put curser on stamps ,hold down CTRL and hit plus key at same time
, hit plus 3 or4 times then look at my scan and you might be surprised at the results..

Damn...........................

Like I said in a previous post Bang goes one of New Zealand's best kept secrets !!

Next you will be dragging them out again to look for:

* Perf 14½ x 13 Slot machine examples with sideways watermark
* Chalk surface paper Chambons (twice the CV of the original issue)
* Various omitted colours (CV's up to $1,500 !!)

And this is just for the 3d dull boring Kowhai flower :)

I will stop before too many secrets are revealed.................
