As mentioned previously, Singapore joined with the Federation of Malaya in 1963 to form Malaysia, although it then went its own way in August 1965.

In 1962, it issued two sets of stamps:

The west African nation of Sierra Leone gained its independence from Great Britain in 1961. In 1962 it issued just two stamps, as part of the World Wide Campaign to Eradicate Malaria:

Peter,

Those stamps from the Federation of Malaya, Kelantan and Singapore look really superb and as fresh as the day they were issued. It will be hard to find these stamps in this condition in Malaysia because of our terrible humidity. Lucky you. 8)

Hi Andrew,

I've managed to find the stamps in good condition, but covers are much harder to find without toning. Dry old South Australia can have its advantages :D

Papua New Guinea is Australia's nearest northern neighbour. In 1962 it was under Australian jurisdiction and was known as the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Stamps were issued that year....

to mark the world wide campaign to eradicate malaria:

to mark the Perth Commonwealth Games:

and to mark the Fifth South Pacific Conference held in Pago Pago:

Finally the 3 shilling "Traffic Policeman" was added to the current definitive series of the time:

one of my favourites :D

Katanga is now a province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo but back in 1962 it was an independent country that had broken away from post independence Congo.

The only stamps issued that year reflect the times:

Afghanistan has been fought over for centuries. Its longest period of stability was between 1933 and 1973 when the country was under the rule of King Mohammed Zahir Shah. In 1962 stamps were issued to mark his 48th birthday:

Image

Afghanistan was a prolific issuer of stamps and miniature sheets, both perforate and imperforate in 1962. So much so that Stanley Gibbons lists them in the appendix, due to their debatable postal standing. They are listed in both Scott and Michel however so they are included in my 1962 collection.

The 15th anniversary of UNESCO (in 1961) was marked in 1962 with a set of stamps an both perforate and imperf miniature sheets:

The same set and sheets were also issued overprinted and surcharged to commemorate Dag Hammerskjold, the late Secretary General of the United Nations (for more on this see the first post of this thread).

The Afghan kingdom was founded by Ahmad Shah in 1747. In 1962 Afghanistan issued these stamps to commemorate him:

Image

A fair number of "national days" were celebrated in early '60s Afghanistan it appears - most were marked by stamp issues.

For example, 44th Independence Day:

and here are the issues for Women's Day:

I haven't seen this set imperforate and Scott don't list them, but they'd be easy to "manufacture" by cutting up the imperf minitaure sheets :?

The stamps from this set were reissued in 1963, surcharged "+15PS"

Peter,

That was probably more than enough to do cover the number of frames that are needed in an exhibition for competitive purposes - what - 80 pages at 16 pages per frame for 5 frames? No China stamps to add to this tour?

Thanks for sharing these wonderful scans of your 1962 collection with us.

Cheers
Andrew

In 1962 the People's Republic of China had been in existence for just 13 years. The stamps of that year are an interesting mix of Chinese culture and revolutionary themes.

I'll start with three additions to the 1961 Buildings definitives:

Image

Later that year another "Buildings" definitive set was released:

80th anniversary of the Birth of the writer Lu Hsun:

1250th Anniversary of the Poet Tu Fu:

and finally a set and souvenir sheet devoted to the Stage Art of Mei Lang Fang:

sadly the sheet is a cheap reprint - not sure my marriage would survive the purchase of the real thing :(

This remains the only item I've yet to acquire from 1962

Unlike a lot of other countries, in the 1960's India seems to have had a policy of issuing just 1 commemorative stamp per event.

There were eleven single stamp issues by India in 1962:

Image

L to R above:
- opening of the first Indian Oil refinery
- Birth Centenary of the Indian Independence leader Madame Cama
- Panchayati Raj, the system of government by village council
- 135th Anniversary of the birth of Sarasvati (who was a reformer of the Vedic religion and founder of the Arya Samaj educational institutions)

Image

L to R above:
- Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi (1890 - 1931) reformer of Community life
- Worldwide campaign to eradicate malaria
- Dr Rajendra Prasad, President of India 1950 - 1962
- Ramabai Ranade (1862 - 1924) female social reformer

In October 1962 India fought a brief (6 week) border war with China that wasn't commemorated by any stamp issues. The country however maintained a strong involvement with the United Nations and issued stamps overprinted for use by its military contingent in the Congo:

Image

The 1954 Geneva conference following the defeat of the French in Vietnam led to the partitioning of Vietnam into North and South as well as the independence of Laos and Cambodia. An International Commission was established that operated in Indo-China from 1954 until the mid 1960's. The Indian Military participated and stamps were issued for their use, including these from 1962:

- for use in Cambodia

Back after a few VERY busy weeks at work..... From a huge country (India) to a tiny one......

The Principality of Monaco has a population (now) of just over 32,000 and an area of just 1.96 square kilometres (a little under 500 acres).

Curiously, the 1962 issues, although covering a wide variety of topics, were released on only 3 days. Firstly on June 6:

20th Monaco Grand Prix and 31st Monte Carlo Rally:

450th anniversary of Monaco's reception of sovereignty from Louis XII:

Worldwide campaign to eradicate malaria.......Monaco's Aquatic Stadium:

Finally on December 12 two lovely sets were issued:

"Protection of Useful Birds"

Presumably the useless ones weren't protected

"Man Under Water" - issued to coincide with an exhibition at the Oceanographic Museum:

Bermuda issued one set in 1962 but it was a long definitive set of 18 featuring buildings in fairly unusual colours:

The Virgin Islands reissued their earlier definitive set in 1962, surcharged for the adoption of US Currency:

From this set comes the nice "stop to the right of c" overprint error (bottom):

Canada only issued 6 stamps in 1962:

The "cameo" series commenced in 1962 with the 5c issue. These stamps were issued in a variety of variants which I'll cover in my next post.

Now where was I? Oh yes, the Cameo series from Canada.

Only the 5c from this set was issued in 1962. This stamp was issued in various formats in 1963 - the standard sheet stamp was issued in 1962 but my Scott and Gibbons catalogues differ in issue dates for the coil. Anyway:

From left to right - standard sheet stamp, coil, with phosphor bands (trust me  scan doesn't show them) and overprinted "G" for official use.

The stamp also was issued in a booklet...

...as well as in a "ready pane" of 25 stamps:

In 1962 Canada issued its first "tagged" stamps, where vertical luminescent bands were overprinted to aid the use of automatic sorting machines. The first to be overprinted with the bands were the Elizabeth II regular definitives from 1954:

I have tinkered with the contrast on the bottom scan to highlight the bands - these have two side bands except for the 4c which has a single, centre band.
