New at Virtual Stamp Club: Forevergreens, Privacy Issues & Stamp Dealers, US Rate Hike

Fear and Loathing on the Internet
Some people like to boast that they can find out anything about anyone on the Internet. But if the reason is stamp collecting, should they? John Leszak discusses privacy, philately and the Internet in his latest VSC column.

U.S. Seeks January Postal Increase
If approved, it would add 2¢ to the cost of mailing a letter or postcard, an extra penny for additional ounces, and 8% more for periodicals.

USPS Plans "Forevergreens"
This year's non-religious Christmas stamps, showing different types of evergreens, will be the first new Forever stamp designs since the rate was instituted.

These stories and more can be found at The Virtual Stamp Club, http://www.virtualstampclub.com

The article on 'privacy' is interesting reading...hard to believe some of the people profiled. Privacy is one thing, but xenophobia or paranoia are another...

:shock: I cannot believe that the collectors he is referring to are so paranoid?!? :shock:

In this day and age I know that your name is googled when you apply for a job, so be careful what you put on facebook....

Excerpts from the article:

Quote:
Can Philatelists Still Keep A Low Profile in the Cyber Age?
By John L. Leszak

... a customer gave his or her telephone number to a dealer only with the assurance that the number be kept private. I took these guarded numbers so seriously that I didn't even include them in my regular rolodex. Instead, I kept them in a small notebook, and even then, I only wrote the first name of the collector, or what that person collected, along with the closely guarded phone number.

... a collector was gravely concerned about the world finding out where he lived ... one day he ... was shopping in a local supermarket in his neighborhood, when he encountered a man who frequented stamp shows. They chatted politely, but the experience was unnerving ... afterwards, he started shopping in a different supermarket across town, because he didn't want the other collector to know his approximate neighborhood.

... so many people, when asked to register at the doors of stamp shows, refuse to give their real names. I've observed at least 3 collectors turn around and walk away from a registration booth at at stamp show when asked to verify their address.

Last summer, I offered to carry several large cartons that a customer had purchased out to the parking lot. The customer refused my offer, and then added with grave suspicion, "then you'd be able to copy down my license plate!"

One of my close philatelic friends said that he was appalled several years ago to receive a phone call from a total stranger who inquired about his stamp collection. He called the police, but they were too busy with other matters and referred him to the telephone company. He changed his phone number as a precaution, but the call troubled him so deeply that he moved to a new home about a year later. Now my friend uses a cell phone, and frequently changes the number. He only uses computers at his local library, and he intentionally misspelled his name when applying for a library card. When he bids in stamp auctions or buys in the mail, he again intentionally misspells his name, and pays for everything with a postal money order.

One clever philatelist has all his philatelic mail addressed to his church, and it's sent to an assumed name. The pastor of the church is happy to comply with this philatelist's request.

Then there's this boob profiled in the article...

Quote:
This young Internet dealer says that when he discovers the birthdays of his customers on the Internet, he enters that information into his computer so that a birthday card email is generated at the appropriate time. I said that if the customers wanted a birthday email, they would've shared their birthdays with him. The Internet dealer replied, "But when they make their birthdays public on the Internet, they ARE sharing that information with me."

What's that old expression about curiosity and a cat...? :roll:

Hello Mr. Snooper, the only reason you found out the person's birthday is because you dug around online to find it. Obviously spying on people is more important to this guy than marking up inventory and selling things to make money. So on the one hand there's the paranoid collectors, and on the other hand there's dealers paranoid about new customers...

I'd be happy to get a "birthday email" from a stamp dealer that I'd done business with. Because then I'd know to never do business with that dealer again!

What I want from a dealer is a simple business transaction, and that's it. I'm a very private person anyway (which is one reason I post comparatively little), and having a dealer "dig up" absolutely unnecessary info about me would be intolerable.

That doesn't mean any interaction can't be polite and friendly, and I don't mind being asked by a dealer about my collecting interests since I can then choose to share that info, or not. (Although being told that my collecting is driven by idle whimsy probably won't do him a lot of good!)

Hmm, write an article discussing that information can be freely found on the internet, you post said article freely on the internet for all to read, advertise said article on a discussion board, quotations from said article are reproduced--with full citation and credit given--within the thread you started said article with in part, and then you suggest displeasure? Do you also leave your wallet lying on the ground then shout "police, arrest that thief!" when someone picks your wallet up?

Don't worry, I've never read VSC before and probably won't be again. I'm quite happy with the superior Stampboards.

Therein lies the problem of internet discussion forums. The words you quoted are the copyright of the author, not the owner of the other discussion forum. But you didn't quote it all (about 50% ?) so that's all right.

Stampboards isn't superior (heaven forbid that Glen would consider himself superior!) to VSC, it's different. Both have good points and bad points. One is moderated more than the other, one is more tolerant than the other, one has a more catholick / less insular membership than the other. Because VSC has a website as well as a discussion forum, there are readable articles there going back about 12 years, though most have a US slant. But anyway, this is about privacy issues, so I'll stop making comparisons now!

Gees, I hope Ron doesn't start snooping, he might find out some funny things about Philly, Jerry and I. Not that he doesn't know them already, as within the GOMC nothing is sacred.

BUT then again, if you believed 10% of what is written in the GOMC thread, you might be closer to the truth.

Another update at The Virtual Stamp Club website:

Negro Leagues Baseball Remembered
African Americans once had their own baseball leagues and star players, and two new stamps remember that. But the Postal Service's Dave Failor tells The Virtual Stamp Club in an audio clip that that wasn't the original concept.

Something Funny
Five somethings, actually: The Sunday Funnies comic strips stamps are coming to U.S. post offices. They're among this year's favorites for USPS stamps chief Dave Failor, as he told The Virtual Stamp Club in an audio clip.

Can You Be A Philatelic Writer?
Yes you can, answers veteran writer and editor John M. Hotchner in his latest VSC column. And he tells you how.

Just some comments on being careful from above posts...

Personally I am paranoid about my address. And after being robbed ( a few years ago and a different home), closely following a stamp auction I never give anyone my home address only the PO Box.

I've also read horror stories of dealers being bashed and robbed when leaving stamp shows.

The thieves knew in my case exactly what to take.

Having a few dogs also helps me now!

I also shread anything with my name on it, particularly mailouts I didnt ask for that a pre-filled in with my details. Makes my blood boil!

If the only way into a stamp show is to give my address then I would walk away to. Or give a false one.

New at The Virtual Stamp Club: (It's been a busy two weeks.) The 2011 U.S. stamp subjects, winners of the AFDCS cachet contest, news of a big donation to the American Philatelic Society, and details about Karl Rove's speech to the APS StampShow 2010 Tiffany Dinner.

We just updated The Virtual Stamp Club website this morning to include an obit for stamp designer Paul Calle; a new stamp collecting video; a new Quotable, and this week's radio feature, which will explain why chief U.S. stamp designer Terry McCaffrey, who could have had his pick of any stamp subjects he wished, always ended up with the Flag definitives. Also on the site now is the U.S. 2011 stamp program, columns by John Hotchner and John Leszak, and a podcast of McCaffrey explaining the challenges of designing Forever commemoratives. Oh, and have you heard about Britain's upcoming Magical Realms stamps? http://www.virtualstampclub.com

The polls are open....

....at The Virtual Stamp Club for voting on what you think of this year's U.S. stamps. Not 2010, but 2011. As the first electronic chapter of a major national stamp organization, The Virtual Stamp Club looks forward, not back.

The poll questions are a little different than what you'll find in paper publications, too: Most Commercial, the Wikipedia/Google Award, Best Junket, and so on.

The starting point for these polls is our Front Page, http://www.virtualstampclub.com

Safeguarding Internet Privacy
Stamp Collecting can be a very private hobby, but the Internet makes privacy difficult. Dealer-writer John Leszak takes a look.

Acceptable Level Of Condition
Each collector sets the criteria for how perfect the stamps and covers in his or her collection is. Noted writer/editor John Hotchner explores this subject in his latest VSC column.

Lloyd's Fun FDCs: Souvenirs from AmeriStamp Expo 2011
The first day covers in this edition range from 1937 to 2011, and from No. 10 envelopes to ceramics.

Video: The Jenny Invert on Local TV
During StampShow 2007, VSC member Alex Haimann was interviewed on local Portland, OR, television station KATU about the Inverted Jenny stamp.

Audio: The Future of New Issues
Former U.S. chief of stamp development Terry McCaffrey answers the question, if no one's using stamps, why issue them?

You'll find these articles and more on The Virtual Stamp Club[/b] website, http://www.virtualstampclub.com

Thanks, Margo. Didn't see the notification that you'd replied. I found I was typing the same information every time to the 6-8 such questions I get in e-mail every week....so I put it in an article.

And.... "The Best Job in the Postal Service"

That's how former executive director of USPS Stamp Services Dave Failor described the job from which he retired recently, during a lengthy interview with me this past Friday. That's now the new Quotable on The Virtual Stamp Club Front Page (www.virtualstampclub.com) but for the first time for a Quotable, if you click on the link, you can hear audio to go with the written quote: 72 seconds of Dave explaining why it was "the best job in the Postal Service," and why there was no shortage of volunteers willing to replace him when he announced his retirement.

In the next few weeks, I'll be using portions of the interview to look at what's ahead for the United Nations Postal Administration and its stamps (Dave's new job) and his legacy in his former job. Watch for them at The VSC.

We've made a major update to the VSC website, http://www.virtualstampclub.com:

  • Two new videos (one on Vatican stamps, the other about a milestone in a young philatelic leader's life);
  • the possibility the USPS is going overboard on baseball (discussion and radio feature);
  • a new edition of the definitive work on U.S. plate numbers has been published;
  • columnist John Hotchner looks at how you can't help learning history through stamp collecting;
  • and a new edition (finally!) of "Lloyd's Fun FDCs" (on modifying cachet art with PhotoShop Elements).

"But wait, there's more!" as they say on late-night TV: The most complete up-to-date free U.S. stamp program listing online; our weekly stamp show listings (not just U.S. but everywhere), and "Help! I Inherited A Collection."
