So, despite the stamps being cancelled at the counter with the 2-ring datestamp, and despite the official line being that items with labels NOT being postmarked at sorting offices, you have the additional Norwich rubber packet handstamps. But at least the Inland Recorded Signed For stamp was permitted for international use. :)

From the postmark I have a fair idea which dealer that was. I've stayed at their home there. ;)

I'd be embarrassed to charge someone $12 and use tired and near worthless old 25 year old rubbish like that on a client parcel.

70% of what you paid for are the $5 and $2, which are $5 a 100 in used bundles. And the others are not too far behind to be honest.

I mailed this today to a member here . and for his $10 shipping he'll get something worth $20 fine used.

 Gawd it's a small world when people can be recognised by the postmark !!

I'll have to admit I never took much notice of parcel/letter stamps I received (or sent) until I joined this board. I keep them now in case they are of use to anyone.

I get a lot of parcels from ebay and mail order (books, gifts and junk, not philatelic) and they never have stamps !!

So just seeing any stamps on parcels, regardless of value, is a bonus I'd say :D

Your example makes a good point though, and something I'll keep in mind if ever I send a parcel.

Skippy

I have started emailing eBay sellers and asking them to mail with stamps instead of white labels if they can. Almost all of them (7) have obliged. Some of them - not being stamp collecting critters thought it was a little strange, but did anyway.

One person told me sure, but they weren't sending me any they had to lick!

From Saran, enclosing the cover I used to send his free GB stamps, a couple of nice Aldabra Giant Tortoises - Thankyou!.
(Which reminds me I must find an Official Paid cover I have from Aldabra -or some islands in the Indian Ocean somewhere, I know I have one!)

Received last week from Paul, nice stamps and 'Earliest Recorded Baseball Game 1838' postmark
and from my favourite Canadian website with another pictorial postmark, both with corner blocks. Very nice!

I did send a parcel to my brother in Switzerland and applied Glen's way of using nice stamps!
Airmail was A$ 120.00 including GST.
I prepared 2 covers with a sheetlet of Mary McKillop and 1 cover "multi coloured"
The parcel was sent on the 18. October 2010 from North Sydney, canceled with the appropriate postmark.
I inserted the covers inside the parcel, outside the clerk wrote POSTAGE PAID!

On arrival day in Arlesheim/Basel, my brother took the covers out of the box and had them back canceled with the arrival date 28.10.2010 and send them in a big envelope straight back to me!
The covers arrived here on the 3rd of November, and got post marked on arrival!

Incoming from Eric in Canada, where they know how to apply postmarks, albeit inkjet - at least you can read the date.

Includes what I presume is this year's Christmas P-stamp (Permanent, not Personalised). Thanks Eric!

I think Glen probably has a good idea of how the postal clerks who prepared the First WMK Kangaroo specimen sets felt!

The US Post Office also has a very light touch in postmarking. Apart from the smudge at top right, the light cancel is invisable. US$62.96 paid for around 2kg, with $58 untouched. I presume the stamps are current? They are cute bears.

((at)) Ms Lou Lou, yeah, I think I both humor and frustrate Glen from the (big/heavy) lots i buy. I swear though that guy must buy his postal clerks some nice brew now and again. These blocks are incredible....

Given how often he's into the PO and how much he sends, not to mention all the $$ the office earns ordering in commems to sell, they probably just hand over the canceller. Maybe he has his own canceller with his name on the handle behind the counter.

It's a licensed post office, they're earning a living through commissions on stamp sales, so someone like Glen is a 'dream customer'. :D

My experience with Licensed Post Offices is that they are pretty much always helpful and responsive. I get excellent service at my local.

I went to an Australia Post office in the city a while ago and asked specifically for stamps to put on a parcel. Of course they just printed a nasty white label. Got very narky when I demanded they give me the stamps I had requested! I did prevail in the end though!

Just got some stamps today from Skilo in this wonderful envelope. Problem is the post office isn't always gentle. Then they put a tag over the whale stamp. Should I leave it as is or soak off the whale?

Not sure. I've never tried for fear I'd take off part of the face of the stamp. What kind of luck have you had removing things like this? Would it work to heat it up before i tried?

I've pulled 100s off without a problem - even when across stamps. :D Of course, there could always be an exception. I am assuming that is a USPS label.

Good luck, I'd go for it.

My Local PO staff are wonderful, I have known them for a number of years, and since I've started collecting, they keep me at least one of everything when each issue comes out.

To my delight, when I went into my post office to post my secret santa bundles, I took most of my own stamps. I was $1.00 short on one of the domestic parcels and I went back up to the counter. The staff member went over to a big box sitting on a bench behind them and shuffled around a bit. She came back with a a butterfly (1996 I think it was) and 2 x saltwater crocodile stamps 1994. Together they totalled exactly $1. Hopefully they will be a nice suprise for my recipient - although I imagine they already have them.

They all had a bit of a giggle at me, when they realised I had LICKED the Melbourne Cup Minisheet

Overall - lovely bunch!

That particular type of label, the long thing strip covering the whale, is not 'stuck for life' like a registered label or such, that you wouldn't want to come off, its just something to help the sorting machine.

I would also leave the cover intact; most uses of the whale will be on parcels, to have a nice in-period, correct-rate-paying, small-size cover that would fit on an album page is a delight.

As for dealing with post offices, I grew up in a small town and the 3 staff of the post office all knew me well. When I had posted a big box one day, the clerk said "I'm not carrying that, you have to take it to into the backroom for me"...I got a free tour of the post office 'internals'. We did have a couple private operations in drug stores, I never used them, the staff were just the store staff sent to work the postal counter instead of the store cash register, and didn't know a whole lot about what they were doing.

Hi George,

I am glad you were able to remove that label no probs, and that you like the cover my friend! I tried to leave enough blank space on the cover for this type of label, but I guess the obvious sometimes is too obvious.

Have a Good One, :D

As for dealing with post offices, I grew up in a small town and the 3 staff of the post office all knew me well. When I had posted a big box one day, the clerk said "I'm not carrying that, you have to take it to into the backroom for me"...I got a free tour of the post office 'internals'

2006 when I had a meeting with the Darwin APO Business Manager, I had a similiar experience. Shame I didnt collect stamps then, so didn't have an appreciation in that sense.

Interesting journey none-the-less.

Now here's a question for the "used in period' collectors. Assuming MissLouLou is right on her dates, those stamps are about 15 years old, but she bought them this week at the PO. In period use or not? :?: :D

Ian, could you give me a quick run down of the term "use in period" bit. No clue.

As for the accuracy of the dates - might be off on the butterflies, though fairly sure, and the crocodiles - almost bet a wisdom tooth pulled out without anesthesia on it.. lol I looked them up when I got home from the P.O.

The santa bundle recipient can hopefully report to us when he recieves it.

:D

That's a question for the locals to answer, and those who collect such things, and precisely why I asked it. Generally a definitive series would be 'in period' until the next series was issued. Commemoratives are 'in period' for not very long at all - as more are issued so very quickly.

So use in period refers to the stamps of an issue - and the amount of time that a post office uses that issue of stamp?

Ian:

From my reading of the other comments around this board, I believe it would be targeted as "Philatelic in nature"....with no discussion about whether they were used in period.

Having said that, it is slowly becoming noticeable in Canadian stamps how often the older definitives have had unannounced changes in paper or perforations and finding that odd variation used on any cover is a challenge. Old stock from a PO may just be the ticket for this type of discovery as they are most likely the very last printing. It can take years for the variations to surface publicly.

Simpsons, the whole sheetlet on cover (and nicely postmarked as well) courtesy of a good US seller.
