Seriously, one of our catalogues ought to indicate what postal service a stamp was issued for, same as in the Australian catalogue. Not an easy job. I don't see Gibbons doing it in the near future; maybe Stoneham. I'll make some enquiries, it could be built up slowly.

They would hardly find solo usage, but across the pond I have seen my share of paper squares from express and insured mail decorated with these.

The prerogative, though, is why would recipients of these overly large covers ever consider saving them whole?

Who would want them?

When did you last see a stamp exhibit incorporating oversized covers?

Unless snagged by a bright postal usage collector working the mail room at a large institution, mail like this, at best, gets sold by the hundreds of pounds to stamp dealers.

At local dealers in Finland, this business is still blooming. Some summers ago I walked in on one of them working scissors on 1970s express mail from padded and oversize envelopes. What on earth are you doing? I burst out. He just laughed, and pointed to the crates he had waiting for the scissors. Nobody collects these, he said.

To stamp dealers it thus comes down to:
a) The ability to move the goods
b) The cost / capacity of storing the goods.

Kiloware will therefore win over a few handfuls of enlightened (read: wacky) usage collectors spread across the globe.

Just last December I walked into another store where they had piles of crates with kiloware chopping work in process. They had sorted foreign mail to a separate pile, and I browsed through it, finding several modern day odd value British solo frankings. On C4 size window envelopes.

Woah, these would be rare, I told the shop owner.

But who can we sell them to? he replied.

Now, if I were to include a window envelope, from 1920 even, bearing an extremely rare postmark, for instance, in a stamp show exhibit, I would get the sh ts spilled onto me from fellow collectors / exhibitors and the two or three judges that would walk quickly by it.

So how and why would a year 2010 cover fare any better?

Speaking personally I would always buy Commems on cover given the choice, so much more interest.

I would love to have found some of the covers that Norvic got hold of, but as he says they absolutely MUST be in period to be of any interest, anyone can put old issues on cover, but once a stamp has gone "out of period" thats it for proper usage.
