Hello Andrew,

Have just recently posted an application to join the PSM, so hopefully will soon be a member. Based in Australia, I probably wont get to many meetings (!), however am looking forward to the journals and some contact with other Malay collectors

I am currently a member of the Malaya study group also.

My interest in the Malay area started with Straits Settlements stamps and progressively into the BMA era. Recently, however I have been putting together a collection of the Federation of Malaya - the National issues (57-63). I particularly like the first 4 stamps of this era, the designs are quite fetching.

My plan is to put together a 1 frame exhibit of this era to display in Australia. My main problem at the moment is finding documentation of postal rates etc for the period, but some time spent studying covers should help here.

Kind regards
Jeff G

Hi Jeff,

Just noted that there is a new member who is also interested in the same area of Malaya, Federated Malay States, etc., who just introduced himself. At least you have a fellow Australian with the same interest.

Won't make any promises but I try to ask around when I get to going for these stamp meetings, which are held every Tuesday evenings. Have not been able to at the moment because I have to conduct evening classes on Tuesdays at the moment. Will ask about the postal dues. There are some really knowledgeable people there and one of them actually sold his excess Federated Malay States (the leaping tigers) at half the local catalogue value which will be much lower than the Stanley Gibbons prices. Purchased some from him and I heard he will be around to sell some more of his stamps (his are in really very good condition. He helped me identify some of the Straits Settlements BMA stamps especially with chalk paper and colours (which I am really a novice in).

Also intend to join the Malaya Study Group as many of the more hard core Philatelic Society of Malaysia members are already members and one of them sold me that he now buys a lot of his stuff from their auctions.

Cheers

Hi Jeff,

Thought I'll type this for you since I have the latest local catalogue (the 27th edition of the Standard Stamp Catalogue of Malaysia Singapore and Brunei - which came out just a few weeks ago) with me, regarding the first 4 stamps of the Malayan Federation. (I don't have the specialised SG catalogue.)

The first stamp (6 cents) is supposed to be deep blue, red, yellow and grey-blue. Apparently, aside from the yellow omitted error (never seen), there are supposed to be an indigo, red, yellow & grey-blue variety and an indigo, red, yellow & slate-blue variety. I never knew there were 3 varieties as far as the colours are concerned. Used to see a lot of these when I was a kid and never gave them too much thought. Saw these mostly on receipts.

The second stamp which is the 12 cent one, has two errors. One supposedly has a missing whisker (wonder how they see this on a tiger that occupies less than 10% of the stamp size. The other error is the "STRF.NGTH" for "STRENGTH" (about time I checked on whatever copies I have but doubt these are that easy to find or even spot - especially the missing whisker.)

The third stamp which is the 25 maroon, red, yell. & dull greenish blue (as it is described in the local catalogue) was probably considered high value at that time. There is supposedly an error variety which has the yellow printing misplaced and catalogued RM100.00 mint (probably no one ever used it so there is no price for used).

The fouth stamp for 30 cents was the orange-red & lake (P 13x 12 1/2). There is supposed to be an orange-red & deep lake (P 12 1/2) The error variety is offset on gum side whcih catalogues at RM220.

Cheers

Thanks Andrew,

That is great information, currently I can get a copy of the 26th edition of the "Tan" catalogue, so will keep an eye out for the the 27th ed. in Australia.

I am lucky enough to have the 30 cent offset variety, purchased at an auction here in Aus a few months ago, it is quite a striking error.

The 6 cent, i have a misplaced yellow, where the yellow for the star in the flag has shifted to the right. I have also copies of the shades, which can be a bit difficult to tell apart until you have all the variations available!

I really appreciate the information that you have supplied and are very pleased that we have been able to get some "talk" going about Malaysian stamps. Hopefully, between yourself in Malaysia and myself in Australia we may be able to get a few more members to join up and get a thread going on Malay stamps.

Best regards
Jeff G

Hi Jeff,

Sounds like you have a really good collection of those stamps. It is a pity that there are not many Malaysians collecting stamps, and those who collect them are from my generation (around the mid 50s).

Was happy to type out that information which you probably have already if you have Tan's catalogue. His latest has a page dedicated to his late wife. Met the guy himself - friendly and seems quite ready to chat but seldom see him in his shop which is at Pertama Complex in Kuala Lumpur.

By the way, if you register on the Forum of the Malaysian Philatelic Society, you could post your questions about the postal rates for that period.

Cheers

The Philatelic Society of Malaysia has a forum and if you want to find out more Malaysia specific stuff, some of their treads are worth reading. They also cover a little of Singapore and perhaps China as there are collectors interested in this area. They also have some answers for detecting watermarks. However, the tone of the forum seems more serious unlike Stampboards which is a little more funky and hip (just my personal point of view) - no offence meant.

The link to the above society is
http://psmonline.org/

If you want to check out the Malaysian Post, the link is

Thanks again Andrew,

I am really loving this chat board and having the chance to read and contribute to different threads. Partiuclarly this one.

My collection of the Malayan Fed. is coming along, just need more postal usage and a few of the errors to be able to put together a 1 frame exhibit (15 pages for a local 1 frame exhibit).

It is an interesting era and even though it is probably still considered "modern" in philatelic terms...the last year of issuing is my year of birth,1963 and according to my children anyway I am not all that modern :)

Interesting what you say about Mr Tan, I have seen photgraphs of his shop and often thought how nice it would be to visit and spend some time in there.

I think in an earlier post you asked if I had visited Selangor, but sadly no, not as yet anwyay. I hope to include it when my wife and I travel to Europe in the next year or so. Now I would love to be able to include a stopover to co-incide with a PSM meeting.

I have noticed the PSM message board and thought that perhaps I should wait until I received confirmation of my membership being recieved o.k, before registering and posting on the site...which I certainly will do in the near future.

Best regards
Jeff G

Hi Jeff,

Nice to hear from you. Well, if you were born in 1963 and your children think you are not modern, then I must be a little more ancient - was born in 1952.

If you do plan to come to Selangor, do let me know. Perhaps I can arrange to meet you and bring you to Mr. Tan's shop. His stamps are in very good condition and if he is in the shop he would probably be happy to chat with you.

I recently got the $100 Straits Settlements (Multiple Script CA) fiscally used for RM250 just because there was a thin right at the top edge of the stamp. A postally used one would have put me back RM7,000+ and a fiscally used one should have been about RM1,000 +, so the RM250 seemed like a good buy for an otherwise nice clean looking facially attractive stamp.

He has at the moment some imperforate pairs at about half his usual price (going for about RM200 to RM250 per pair) but these are the more recent butterfly and flower (Federal Territory) ones. Can post a scan to you if you want.

By the way why not register at their forum board - not as active as Stampboards - but you get some nice threads and you can also ask questions and keep in touch with some of the going-ons there. It is also free. They have about 87 members at the last count but if you do not do any posting, they delete your name after awhile I was told to keep the list manageable and for only active posters.

I did some posts there and got this bit about their auctions going to be online with scans. They have auctions every month. They are also doing away with circuit books.

Do take a look. Their website is
http://psmonline.org/

and the Malaysian Post Office website is
http://www.pos.com.my/

Why not take a look.

Cheers

Gunna, the Philatelic Society of Malaysia has now got its auction list put online.

Don't know whether any of the items will interest you. This auction is to be held on the 27th of May. Prices are all in Malaysian ringgit (Very roughly:A$ = RM2.80; US$1 = RM3.5; BPS1 = RM6.8.)

Will suggest to them to have scans of some of the lots.

Cheers

Andrew,

Thanks for that information.
Will check the PSM site shortly for the auction lots. I have registered for the forum there as well and will post a couple of questions in the next day or two :)

Haven't been on-line too much in the last few days.....work gets in the way unfortunately. But on the postive side, have some time free later this week to concentrate a bit more on philately.

Thanks again for the details about the auction.
I am hoping my membership application made it through o.k

Very best regards
Jeff G

Andrew,

Thanks for the update..Sounds like a great couple of days and would love to hear any updates if you have the chance to attend.

I have been been "offline" for a bit recently due to work committments etc (all very boring) but have recently picked up some nice Negri Sembilan items and are really enjoying learning a bit about this areas history. Hoping to be able to be a bit more active on the forum now.

Negri Sembilan.....not too far South from where you are, I believe.

Cheers

Gunna,

Long time no hear but always nice to hear from you. Perhaps you can show some of those Negri Sembilan items on a scan somewhere. Would love to see them.

Hope to get some of the personalised stamps (with the PSM logo) tomorrow afternoon. Perhaps I should also go borrow a camera and learn how to operate it so that I can take some shots of the things around.

Wonder what the dealers will have to offer. That PSM member I told you about who sells pre-war items at half catalogue may turn up and if so I hope he will offer his duplicates at that same rate.

Is there anything that you might want be to look out for and perhaps keep you informed. The exhibition lasts until Sunday but I will probably not be able to go everyday. Intend to take leave on Friday (no lectures at all) and spend the day there.

Cheers
Andrew

Andrew,

Thanks for your kind offer. I have probably overspent my budget over the last couple of weeks, so might have to pause a little on buying. :(

I hope the weekend is excellent. Good that you can "escape" on Friday, that is a real bonus.

The personalised stamps with the PSM logo sound interesting, if you can post some scans some time in the future would love to see how they turned out.

All the best

Gunna,

Since you asked, your wish will be granted:

Got these at the exhibition today. As usual, you find the usual same faces, the hard-core collectors and each was trying to learn from each other how best to position the stamps to get the cancellations on.

Image

Each set cost RM11 (inclusive of the envelope). There are only 4 designs for these corporate personalised stamps and each design comes in two denominations, 30 sen and 50 sen.

Image

May go visit again on Friday, Saturday and maybe Sunday morning.

Cheers
Andrew

Glanced through. It's informative and has some interesting articles. The PSM is also selling some 5 books (some produced by the Malayan Study group) for roughly RM50 each (if I heard right). Good material if you want to get really serious into those areas.

Gavin,

Thanks. The society is actually 60 years old but used the theme 50 years of Philately to focus on the 50 years of Malaysia as a nation (50 years of independence).

There are about 80 to 100 (don't know the exact count) frames with some pretty interesting stuff that I will probably have a good look at on Friday.

Perhaps I should borrow the camera from the children so that I can take some good pictures to share here (no promises but I will try.)

Kenny,

I'll ask Ye for permission.

Cheers
Andrew

(Note: Mr. Ye is the Secretary of PSM).

Gavin,

No problem. By that number, we are actually a very young country. The next big one will probably be the 75th and when the 100th anniversary comes along, I will be long gone. Sob. sob.

Oh well.

Cheers
Andrew

Andrew and Kenny,

Thanks for the scans of the covers and stamps. I quite like the stamp designs.

The attached tabs with the PSM logo are exellent as well. It is a really good logo the PSM type with the Malacca "B109" hand cancel. One of the better club logos, I think.

Enjoy the exhibition.

Cheers

Glen,

I did bid on three items, two were fiercely bidded from RM5.50.
One ended up at RM55 and the other RM35
(I think I overpaid but since I did not have a single FMS cover before
I thought I'll grab it while it is available).
These two were FMS covers from the 1930s
while the other was a cover from Ipoh to India (I think)
for RM5.50 (no one was interested in this one).

The auction was attended by about a dozen people,
at the new location which was a lot noisier,
harder to park but nearer to my home (about a 40 minute drive).
Met up with some of the senior members (in terms of age and length of membership).
Based on the feedback it looks like the club is reverting back
to the old place at the clubhouse premises in Sentul (Kuala Lumpur),
which is about an hour's drive on a Sunday morning.

The Australian items were not taken but the rules here are any item not bidded for
can be purchased at its reserve price.
Many of the bids went to postal.

The next one should be the fourth Sunday of February.

Cheers
Andrew

Glen,

I think it looked like that.
If you had told me earlier, I would have bidded for it.
I don't think it was taken anyway.
I'll keep an eye on it the next time.

Cheers
Andrew
