Going back to my lost bargain BW 96(16)0.

Thanks to DJM for trying to make me feel better. It may not have been worth $4500- very hard to tell condition from such a small scan- but it WAS that cliche!

I said it sold for about $110, but have been able to go back & check. There was only one other bidder when I tried to make my bid, but there were 2 more (presumably snipe) bids 6 & 2 secs before the end, & it sold for $330- still a great bargain.

To Diver Pete, who said "That is why the good Lord invented snipe software": I think snipe would solve some problems but obviously not all. Who knows how far the 1st snipe bidder was actually prepared to go? I may not have got it anyway even though I was trying to bid much higher. If everyone used snipe what would happen? It would go to the person who wanted it most &/or had the deepest pockets with no prior bidding to assist strategy.

Hi Mobbor
I am the person who bought the stamp :D
However, the stamp is actually not BW 96(16)O - as the stamp shows a watermark line at right.

Image

Image

In fact I have another stamp also showing the lower frame missing, but again it is not 16R58 nor 16R59 :(, as this stamp (without OS puncture) has to be L60 or R60, which shows watermark line both at right and bottom....

The OS stamp is in a different position again as it doesn't show any watermark line at bottom.

Refer to ACSC, it does state that "an apparent example of variety is known showing line watermark at right, indicating it is not R58; this may be a third missing frame variety"

I am wondering if anyone would have any more information about this, especially regarding the footnote in ACSC... This will be much appreciated!

Thanks :D

I have not bought much commonwealth from Ebay recently as the things I want have been going for more than I can afford.

However, look what I received this morning it came with 3 other values the scan was unclear and I just wanted to add some bits to my poorly represented NW Pacific range for £2.00.

I believe I have a line through four pence flaw SG73c cat £375!!!

Had to show somebody.....

Image

Also a couple of weeks ago I got these for £22, which is more than I would usually pay for a few individual stamps so there still are the odd bargains out there! :D

Hi alex_c_y1977

Thank you very much for your post. I did note the comment in BW & did consider it might be the unlocated one. And now it looks like there may actually be 2.

It's a shame most of the scans on Ebay are so poor. There's nothing in the 2007 edition of the BSAP checklist. However both 16L & R60 should be identifiable from other flaws:-
16L60- shading left of crown- left end of lines 15 & 16 (counting down) missing & line 17 broken one third of way from right. Also a 1mm line outside right frame near base.
16R60- 1st state in red & early brown- tiny downward notch on middle of foot of left limb of Á'of POSTAGE, Bottom frame- notch 3.25mm from left corner. Emu-circular flaw 1mm across at point where top of rear leg meets body (not always present).

Of course there is no reference to a missing frame on either cliche, but all these missing frames are somewhat mysterious.

Regards

It might be useful to have larger scans of both of stamps for the wiki if possible.

A lad in the local stampclub started collecting Aussie land - so I started scanning qxl.dk for good starting lots - stumpled upon this:

6 lots, AUD$5,48 per lot - total price with S/H: AUD$36,32

I posted above about a lot that someone else won. It was valuable but I don't know what he paid for it. The successful bidder read my post & responded; which was quite a surprise.

I have just purchased a lot that included a $500 stamp for $5. Presumably this is the sort transaction that should be shown here. However I've decided this is probably a bad idea! The seller could be a member here &
a) I don't want to shove his loss in his face: &
b) I don't want to encourage him to check more carefully in the future.

What do you think?

Well if he doesn't memorise the image of every stamp he sells and you only show the single rarer stamp, how would he know?

Or don't show the rarer stamp, just the bit that makes it worth $500. I'm assuming its a KGV?

(Then again, if it was me, I'd remember my babies!)

Poor show Mobbor !!

I thought this board was about helping each other and looking after everyone's best interests. If someone on the board was selling some stamps that I saw was worth a LOT more than what they were asking I 'd probably tell them.

Hopefully other members would have this view as well.

Darrin.

But on the other hand, many members on here consciously sell items at 5% to 10% of catalogue value ... or even give them away.

DJM wrote:

Harsh criticism. I don't think Mobbor's purchase was from a stampboards listing. There is a whole 'nother thread about this somewhere, but the general consensus seemed to be that the spoils go to the finder, not to the person who originally owned it or anyone in between. How much of the next auction realisation will go back to the original owner of the tre-skilling yellow? Methinks none. That's how the system works. If I'm wrong, please tell me.

But we certainly do help each other here. I've seen a lot of wise advice given to members who have asked about a sale lot before putting it up for grabs.

If we want to discuss the ethics of keeping quiet it can be discussed on this thread:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=16448&p

Let's just get back to whether a purchase was a bargain.

Perhaps mobbor could have made a separate post for his question.

Got this GB postal stationery today. I paid 2€+ 1€ postage. Ok, card is overpaid for the destination to Germany, but still a rare postal stationery in used condition. Huggins& Baker 250£ or Michel 250€.

Having done the wrong thing I suppose I'd better show the $5 stamp that I didn't want to.

BW says in a footnote it's believed to be a cracked cliche, but the new 1 1/2d checklist is not so ambivalent.

mobbor if you did not add the note as to WHY that stamp was allegedly worth $500 I'd have looked at your great scan above for 10 minutes and still not known.

You have that knowledge and most of us do not.

I have 100s of that same stamp on my Rarity Page now as a job lot - see scans below. I bought them off a member here who got them in an old stockbook with all kinds of notes pencilled on backs, and I will mail them unopened to the client who bought them on the weekend.

Do either of us know or CARE if the alleged $500 stamp is in there? Well I for one do not, as I made a buck on the deal, and IF there is a decent flaw in there, good luck to the new owner! I suspect the member here feels the same as they cost him near zero.

I learnt 30 years back not to waste 2 hours time peering at those kind of lots.

I just used his scans, and did not open the packet. Those with good eyes like yours will always benefit - as my motto goes - "Knowledge Is Power"

Hi Glen

That's my type of lot.

The flaw, as I did say, lies between the emu's feet. Perhaps it doesn't look much like a crack, but they come in all shapes & sizes. The checklist has 3 illustrations- this is similar to 2nd state. It got even thicker, though apparently didn't extend further.

I agree Woodster, a stamp is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Hi Mobbor,

I have to say I found nearly all my better stamps in such junk lots, like cracked plates, single line 1/2ds or a rusted cliche and I think if the seller doesn`t recognize that, he can not really be angry or disappointed.

Greetings from Germany

I would have to agree with josto. My 3 rarest and most valuable stamps were part of a small lot which I picked up in Ebay for $US12. Those 3 stamps have catalogue value of $US300 each. (Of course, I would have to find a buyer for them. But with fewer than 3 or 4 copies known of each, it would not be too difficult to do.)

As Glen says, Knowledge is Power.

Nice found mobbor! :D
To be honest I wouldn't care whether I can find another buyer for $500. If I find something worth $500 for $5, I keep it and wouldn't sell anyway! And at least I don't have to pay $500 for it in the first place.

Cheers

Good to see this thread is alive & well again. I don't think I disagree with any of those comments.

The stamp is not for sale. To me it's value lies in enhancing my collection. If the stamp was for sale I doubt whether I'd get $500, but it's hard to know. There is of course a small demand for this sort of stuff, but it only takes 2.

A auction just closed. I was the winner, the seller (9000+ deals sucessfull) wrote that the total CV was about 5500 Dkr (Stanley Gibbons) the hammer dropped at 50 dkr, Shipping + handeling was 25 dkr.

The description was - 5 booklets (usaly some 25ish pages per booklet)

He had only scanned the front page of the 4 booklets, so I'm looking forward to see the entire lot hehe

In anycase there's a 14 days no questions asked return policy

Nice on Kloster

Well a postcard arrived today. I was very nervous about this one and took a big risk.
Paid $65 buy it now for it and if I were wrong, it would be bunny status for me.

Not the best image but I was 50% sure it was a die II

My Scan Today

This item wasn't exactly from an auction, but I still consider it an online bargain.

KGV Silver Jubilee complete to 249 stamps MLH for $675 US. Have found one variety that catalogues for £110, one for £200...I'd say with two stamps being worth the the rest is a bargain!

I got these Canada KGVI pictorials VF MVLH from 1938 for $50 CAD (Unitrade 2011 $252.00 CAD).

Image

It's also a real life auction, but since I can submit bids online, I think it counts.

I saw this C of A W/M Roo on fleabay priced at £209.00 just before it finished. Questions had to be asked about the black mark at lower right. The seller didn't get back to me until after the auction had finished and it was unsold. :) He confirmed the mark was on the mount.

Image

This arrived in the morning mail. The postman actually bought it to the door. Nice fresh looking stamp.

Image

P.S. The good news was that he sold it to me off his web site for £195.00

Just snagged another one IMHO.

The seller correctly listed this lot as Plate Blocks of the 3d Opening of the Tasmanian Submarine Cable. The old ACSC value of a hinged plate block is $20 each. So picking these up for $24.95 was IMHO a bargain.

But reading the ACSC it states the lower right plate block only comes with a variety (weak entry below PO of POSTAGE) or the re-touch. Value $100 for either the variety or re-touch.

pitronix,

At under 7 cents each, you can't go far wrong with these - mostly clean looking stamps, and a decent "starter" lot for an interesting area.

But at the same time, don't expect to make a massive profit on them.

Hi Gavin-h,

I'm not interested in profit here just fun and adding some missing pieces, finding some nice cancellations or shades, that kind of things and really nice mix at 7 cents per stamp :)

I think this is a bit of a bargain - I paid US99c + $3 postage off ebay

Included in the lot were 2 other ordinary but possibly saleable covers

Image

As well as being a fairly decent taxed cover the Taxe mark is from the more difficult last series of Johannesburg handstamps

I'm happy :D

Hi Quicksingle,

Hi!

Here is one of my lates bargains. Got this lot of all 1st wmk stamps for AU 18$! I like the tpo postmarks, there are two paquebot colombo postmarks, a foreign postmark I don`t know and the 2d is inverted wmk! I think all in all, although the 9d is for the bin, a good bargain!

Here's a couple of good finds on Trade Me last week, I won them both

Image

Image

Listed by a well known NZ dealer, as a 2/- Cook. lightly hinged $10.00,
But that flaw, being plate 1 R1/6 brings the Cat price to $225.00, I got it for 10.

Then the following day, I won for $5.00 a unhinged 2/-....

Plate 1 R8/5, price $100 +

thank goodness for high resolution images and the internet !

Now this one was really a bargain, just arrived today. Great stamps, very fine used (few CTO and one with rare postmark for that particular stamp). I was delighted when it arrived! More then a good catalog value, and all for mere 7.70 (around 100 $AU Scot catalog, more in Michel) $AU from a ebay.com.au.

Picked these up 2 weeks ago from a USA dealer that sells online, obviously they only know about watermarks and not listed faults. As the picture will show it is BNG SG5a deformed D on 4d.

I was very happy to part with $125 AUD for the set and he happily wore the postage cost as well.

Picked these up off ebay earlier.

Germany - Soviet Zone - Mecklenberg-Vorpommern

All listed plate varieties in Michel - and someone's done all the "hard work" for me.

Exception being the "20.12.1945" overprints, which were "private" overprints.

I was happy to pay US $60 inlcuding P&P to England.

Total cv >> €1,500 if all the mint are unmounted, and counting all as cheapest shades/paper types, but even if all are mounted, still a v good deal.

Perf top right is fine - it's a line perf stamp, so it's exactly as it was produced, nothing missing.

Quicksingle I would suggest it might be missing a stamp to the left of the upper postmark.

You might be right, but 1/6d is the correct rate for an airmail letter to England in 1936. Most of teh time the 1/6d Hermes definitive (specifically issued for this service) would have been used.

I suspect that the envelope may had something covering it, and the cancel started on that other object. I would have expected to see another Ship Mail Room hand cancel if there had been another stamp on it (which could only have been a Late Fee 1d I would think). To have both the roller and CDS indicates the letter was posted in a pillar (letter box) and canceled prior to being sorted for air mail and recanceled.

Hi All,

I think PeterS is right no sign of another stamp on the cover, possibly got stuck in the sorting machine.

And why did Melbourne use Ship Mail Cancels on Airmails?

I believe that air mail and ship mail were both sorted in the Ship Mail Room. The Post Office didn't set up a separate Air Mail Room when aircraft started carrying mail. No increase in the amount of mail ... just a different carrier.

Do you know when the Air Mail section was first set-up?

Neill, That is a very good question! :?

Quoting from the Australian Air Mail Catalogue...

1926 (MARCH) - A PMG memorandum on 16 January 1926 advised that rubber stamps were being manufactured for use on air mail correspondence. Twenty seven identical cachets were distributed and brought into use from March 1926 at the following post offices which were stopping places on air mail routes:

For the Adelaide - Cootamundra route: Adelaide, Mildura, Echuca, Deniliquin, Narrandera, Hay, Cootamundra, Broken Hill, Melbourne - 9 stopping - place post offices.

For the Charleville - Camooweal route: Charleville, Tambo, Blackall, Longreach, Winton, McKinlay, Cloncurry, Mt Isa, Camooweal - 9 stopping - place post offices plus a cachet for Normanton added later.

For the Perth - Derby route: Perth, Geraldton, Carnarvon, Onslow, Roebourne, Whim Creek, Port Headland, Broome, Derby - 9 stopping - place post offices.

The cachets were impressed on air mail posted at the above 28 post offices and on air mail posted elsewhere that joined the air mail system at these points. Different post offices used various coloured inks.

The earliest use of Melbourne SHIP MAIL ROOM is 13.3.26 and the earliest use of Perth SHIP ROOM is 23.6.26

I hope that this is a start!
