I had posted this to another thread, but it's perfect here, too. Not a mail stamp but very old.

It is a kind of French fiscal stamp on a soap. It says "Loi 23 juin 1857" which is law related to intellectual and artistic property. Also says "A la reine des Abeilles", "to the Queen of the bees".

As an avid collector of butterflies and insects on stamps, I recently did a small exhibit at a local stamp show.
I like to include interesting facts to make it more appealing.
So here is some information you may like.
Harry Potter has Albus Dumbledor, Albus meaning white and Dumbledor is an old devonshire name for a bee.
The seabees are an American Naval Construction force that began in WW2
Their logo has a bee.I have a cover of that force.
de Havilland Queen Bee.It was an unmanned target drone flown by remote control. So some aeroplanes can go into the collection.
The order of meritious Behavior can be found on the stamp of Italy.

The Arms of Sahah Fergusson has a bee.
Bee Hives were used as hand grenades popular in guerrilla warfare.
Bees were put in clay pots or horns with poisonuos powder to make them venemous.
The American Secretary of State Haig accused the Russians of using chemical warfare in Laos, Kampuchea and Afghanistan. The victims of this yellow rain had in fact confused chemical attack with a shower of bee faeces released by a large swarm of giant bees.
Diet of Worms.
Diet(assembly of the Holy Roman Empire. In 864 the council of Worms decreed that a swarm of bees should be executed in public for stinging a man.
If you would like to have more just get in touch.

Glen, has been urging me to write something about beekeeping and travel (but that is a different story)

I am a small beekeeper with 5 hives and run a apiary supply business when I not at the other job that I work at to pay for my travels & hobbies.

I am also, and soon to be, was the editor of the newsletter for the local beekeeping association so have a fair idea of what happening in beekeeping, for this note I just concertrate on Eastren Australia.

It's been a terrible year with unusal weather affecting the bees and flora. The cool weather in Victoria has meant that some of the flowers didn't put up nectar. The wetest summer on record, increased the humidity which made it difficult for the bees to convert any nectar to honey.

Floods in central and NW Victoria resulted in approx. 1000 hives been lost and two honey shed damaged. parts of NW victoria are still under water 3 weeks after the rains. The rains also cuts the blossom of the trees reducung the floral resourses available to the bees.

NSW has had flooding in the central and the north of the state. I don't know about their hive losses. The increased humidity in central NSW has lead to a rapid increase in small hive beetle. ( a small beetle originaly fron South Africa, that lives in the hives laying grubs that damage the combs and fouling them to the point that the bees abandon the hive)

The hives are normally moved for a period , into the drier parts of the state to reduce the beetle numbers as their eggs are fradile and dryness damages them, and the grubs pupae in the ground so hot dry earth knocks them down as well.

Queensland has had flooding from two cyclones ( Hurricanes) and is recieviving its third lot of floods at the moment. Hive losses ?

Like a lot of countries we have had cases of rubbish Chinese honey imported and blended with Australian honey and then exported as Australian honey.

O well if the the bee business gets to bad I can always make a Ned Kelly mask an become a stamp dealer, masks being optional.

On 10 May Australia Post issued a sheet of stamps showing Farming in Australia. One of them features honey.

There's also a gutter strip showing honey comb in the gutter.

This one has already been posted, but since I just spotted it in some of my trade stuff, I figured I would show it in 855.

Visit almost any of the acacia bushveld areas of Namibia at almost any time of the year and you will almost certainly see the beautifully coloured, distinctively slender shape of a Swallow-tailed bee-eater as it hawks insects from its roost, usually a branch on the outside of a convenient bush or tree.
A short aerial sally to catch a passing insect, particularly a honey-bee, then back to its perch to beat it against a branch before gulping it down.
The adult swallow-tail is 20 to 22 cm in length and is quite striking in its plumage of green and blue, with a yellow throat and blue gorget. It has bright red eyes and a long slightly decurved black bill. The diagnostic deeply forked blue tail distinguishes it from any vaguely similar birds. The sexes are alike.
The swallow-tail's scientific name is Merops hirundineus - Merops being Latin for a bee-eater andhirundineus being Latin for "like a swallow".
The swallow-tail is widespread throughout most of Namibia, usually found in pairs or, when not breeding, in small flocks of 8-10 birds, preferring woodland, often near water.
It nests in tunnels up to 1 m long, excavated in a low bank or in a burrow such as that of an aardvark, in which it lays a clutch of 2 to 4 white eggs.

I have a bee question ...

How far do they fly from their hive, and do they have to be back each night ?

The reason I ask is that I don't normally see many honey bees around here, but at the moment I have an Agave plant flowering which is covered in bees, they really love it.
I'm wondering where the hive might be ? would it be a local person with a hive or have they come from miles away

We have a hive of native bees in our garden, they pretty much look after themselves and are essential for pollinating my husbands native orchid collection.

Maximum forage distance for bees is usually around 3km from their hive.

This is problematic when moving hives ... you need to move them at least 7km ... if the bees can reach their old forage area from their new hive location, they may end up back where their hive used to be. :(

Bees can survive outside overnight if the weather is warm. If cold, they need to be back in their hives so they can collectively generate heat. Mostly they are in their hives at night. That's the time to move hives without leaving too many bees behind.

Hi machin head, I have a question. My son and I were walking my daughter's dog across the street today in the conservation area, and we spotted this guy. All the other bees were quite active, but we were wondering if this one was dying because it spent its stinger. Can you tell from the picture?

I realize these aren't stamps, so no one need bother pointing that out.

I bought this bottle of wine at the liquor store today when I saw it, just for this thread.
