My main collecting area has always been Great Britain, however, like most collectors I have a number of side-line collections that can often spend far to long sat on the shelf where the contents are seen only by a few friends who are aware of some of the subject areas that I have laying about ...

One such area is Canada, and as this recently got pulled off the shelf, I thought that I would scan the contents and share here with other collectors.

This is by no means a specialist collection, (although some who have seen it disagree), but is more one of those things that as a collector, I just enjoy looking at and from time to time, adding to ...

Letter from Quebec to Montreal dated the 4th October 1832. Manuscript dateline at the top and Quebec CDS at left in red.

It has the word Paid in black manuscript at the top right corner and a boxed PAID stamp has been appled in red with the postage rate, (9 pence) added in red manuscript.

Free Mail - John Prince

Image

Letter from Montreal to Lancashire, England, sent by John Prince MP and dated the 26th December 1844.

The letter travelled via Boston as indicated at top left.

In the United States a PAID mark was added, (top right) with the figure 5 added in manuscript to denote 5 cents internal postage. A second PAID mark was added at the top left with a rate added of 37½ cents - this covering the postage rate to England.

In England the letter was charged with 2/- in black manuscript, (to be collected on delivery), which was the equivalent to the 42½ cents (37½ + 5 cents) denoted in the United States.

There was no postage charge for carriage of the letter in Canada as denoted by the word free above John Prince's signeture at the bottom left.

In 1852 the pepr type used for the production of these stamps (as well as some of the other values) was changed from laid to wove. This paper has a creamier / whiter appearance.

Printed in Grey and Grey-Brown shades
Issued 12th May 1851
Engraved by Alfred Jones, based on a drawing by William Drummond
Printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson
Production 100,400 sheets

As with the 3 pence beaver, the initial printing was made on laid paper. This paper has a toned appearence and the stamp printings are generally more grey-brown.

Image

Cancelled with the numeral 14 used at Goderich, Upper Canada

As with the 3 pence value, shortly after the first printing had been made, the paper type was changed from laid to wove. These have a creamier appearance to the paper and the printed impressions are generally more of a true grey printing.

12 pence - Queen Victoria

The 12 pence stamp was printed in brownish-black with some shade variation
Issued on the 14th June 1851
Engraved by Alfred Jones based on a painting by Chalon
Printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson

The total production for this stamp was 5,000 sheets and the stamps were printed on laid paper, which again has a tonned appearance.

From the printing of 50,000 stamps, only 1,450 were distributed to postmasters. It is presumed that all those distributed were sold as there are no records of any being returned or redeemed with the supply office.

The remaining 49,550 stamps were officially destroyed in 1857.

Image

Due to an error in the ledger that was kept by the printers, the Canadian authorities were only charged $10 for the entire production of this value.

½ pence - Queen Victoria

Issued on the 1st August 1857
The design was based on a sketch by Henry Griffin who had based his work on a medal produced by William Wyon.

Wyon at this stage was still using the same head design on his medals as he had used for the City of London medal on which the head for the Penny Black and Two Pence Blue stamps of (1840) Great Britain were based.

The printers were the same as had been used for the previous issues

The total production was 2,600,520 sheets

The first printings were made in 100 unit sheets and later this was changed to 120 unit sheets. The earlier printings were made on ribbed paper - the ribbing being horizontal on the 100 unit panes and vertical on the 120 unit panes.

The next series was in 1859 with the change from pence to cents ....

Glad that they are of use ...

Please bear in mind that many of the stamps are not in the best condition - however, they do at least serve as a reference

Just out of curiosity, but do you have any idea how much in today's money 12 1/2 cents would be equivalent to?

The index that many use is the price of a loaf of bread ...

In 1900 (40 years after this issue - but the earliest I could find on a quick check) - a loaf cost 4 cents and the price given for 2005 was $1-79. Based on this I would guess around the $6 mark. Also note that about the same period (1901), a labourer in Halifax or Montreal would earn about 14 cents per hour and those in Toronto were on a higher wage, about 23 cents per hour.

Buy some food or get a funny green label to send a letter ... I know what my choice would be ..

With it now being 2:25am in the UK, I am going to select this as a good point to take a break.

The next issue will follow tomorrow (later today) giving everyone change to take a look and add any comments / corrections as needed

You have these 2 above in your collection - or they are just auction photos?

Cat on these is £250,000 - yet several $10 type stamps above like the 17c below are bin fodder with chunks and corners missing etc?

I am confused!

And also like the one above, badly damaged at top right and with a very crude repair, which is included for the same reason ..

This collection belonged to my grandfather and some (later King George 5th period) items were added by my father when he started collecting. When I started (in the mid 1970's), I added some King George 6th items, and as such this collection is special as it covers three generations of collecting within the family.

For this reason, when the collection was written up in the order as presented here, it was decided, (by my father and myself), that everything, regardless of condition would remain as part of the collection.

Many stamps, such as those shown, (see also the poor condition of the 1 cent of 1859), have trimmed / damaged perfs, bad centering or other faults - and although these would be easy to replace, are included and will remain as part of the collection for the same reasons.

A Sydney guy Mark Dankin used to exhibit a PAGE of them which was also pretty amazing.

Small Queens

Over a period of time from January 1870 to August 1893, new designs were issued to replace those already in use. These were printed from a new set of plates that are generally refered to as Small Queens, Small Heads or sometimes the Small cents issues.

3 cents

The engraving already done by Charles Henry Jeens formed the basis for these stamps, (see above)

The portrait of Queen Victoria was engraved by Alfred Jones
The lettering and frames were engraved by Henry Earle Sr.
Printed by the British American Banknote Company
Printings made at Ottawa, Montreal and then a later production returning to Ottawa

First Ottawa printing

The first printing was made in Ottawa from 1870 to 1874. Thus anything dated 1873 or earlier has to be from this production and forms the basis for assigning other examples.

The paper used in this period was fine and smooth and is silky to the touch

Example on cover dated the 3rd November 1873

in addition to the dates of use, the early plates used at Ottawa had a small dot in the bottom left corner

Second printing - Montreal

From 1874 to 1888, production was transfered to montreal.

For this production period good quality wove paper was used.

As before, items dated 1887 or earlier must be from this or the earlier production and with examples on hand, the paper types can be seperated to correctly assign the printing.

Both stamps show the plate dot at the bottom left corner.
Some of the early plates (those showing the dot) were employed at Montreal for the second printing

Third printing - Ottawa

From 1888 to 1897 production was transfered back to Ottawa
At this time poor quality coarse paper was used for the printings

None of the early plates, (with the plate dot), were still in use, so examples without this dot are most often from this of the Montreal printing and the paper types should allow correct assignement.

I have several pages that show various postmark types, but will here just show one item to illustrate the stamps ...

This value is very common, but due to the method of perforating, variations in the size of the stamp are often encountered. Examples of this are shown below ...

1 cent

The 1 cent value was produced at the 1st Ottawa printing and the Montreal printing. There was no production of this value on the return to Ottawa (the 3rd printing).

Issued 15th March 1870

The distinction between the two production sites used for this value is simple ...

2 cents

As with the 1 cent value, this was printed at the first ottawa and Montreal productions only. The problem with this value is that although shade variations are noted, they are very subtle, and (at least to my eyes), help very little in seperating the printings.

The best method for assigning these is to check the paper, (as noted on the 3 cents above), fine smooth paper that is silky to the touch on the Ottawa printings and good quality wove paper used at Montreal.

The Montreal prints to my eye, (when you have several side by side), always appear to be a little paler and look a little more blue ... I will let you decide from the scans below ..

Montreal printings

Once again, there are pages showing cancellation types, dated examples and narrow and wide perforated stamps, which would just be duplicating what has been shown above in a different colour.

sadly - none of my children are intrested in collecting, but one grand-daughter is showing some signs of getting into collecting - (we can but hope).

If you tell them they are worth a fortune they will be very attractive to them, money talks. Then when they are looking at values and they aren't worth what they thought, it will be too late as they will be hooked :D

Thanks for continuing to share the early Canadian stamps with us. I have learned a great deal from it. A very impressive "side-line" collection as well.

What other side collections do you have? I would be curious to see them if they are anything like this one.
