I just LOVE attractive cancels.

We ALL have some hum dingers. Even common towns on common stamps can look superb.

This thread is simply to showcase whatever you have good scans of.

Let me start us off with British New Guinea on Queensland:

I couldn't resist this one when I saw it.

Was it a favour by someone in the post office?

Was it a genuine mistake when setting the date-stamp?

A nice example of "out of country" usage.

Yes Yes!

I quit Aust MUH/M collecting after reading Glen's articles on used stamps, and Rod Perry's on covers, in ASM and I LOVE the swap: so much to research.

As soon as I figger out how to post images I will (I know...how-to is on another forum....)

jrg - these are the VERY old style state era "Skeleton" (no outer ring) cancels.

The date slugs were generally inserted with tweezers on these ... so the absent mind staffer has done the '16' upside down.

This is a (scarce) Lemon Yellow and was on sale from MARCH 1916, so the July 1916 date fits nicely.

If I were selling it I'd place at least $75 on it as it looks LOVELY. :D

Lautoka Fiji 1921 for those who can't read upside down. :)

Almost certainly Paquebot useage, but a nice item for sure.

I think these are great cancels.

This mini-cover (it's about 4 inches by 2.5) was sent from Aussig in the Sudetenland to Prague (then Czechoslovakia) a month to the day after the Nazi occupation started. The interesting this about the cancel is that the top (Czech) inscription has been removed by the occupiers leaving only the German name Aussig.

Bilingual cancels (Czech & German) were standard in this area, as prior to 1918, it was within the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Austrian PO was in charge.

It is also interesting to note the use of both Czech and German stamps. Clearly "philatelic", but I think very attractive.

Just like the simpleness of this cancellation on what I believe is a pair from Prussia. Any significance behind this cancellation/

From first issue (1851) until approx. 1859, Prussian Post Offices used these number cancels as standard - the number will relate to the Post Town, but unfortunately I don't have a list.

Been trying to get this scan uploaded on my website with not much luck. After 5 attempts since yesterday, I somehow managed it. Like these cancellations of towns in Perak, which still exist today.

Mod - Dead link deleted

I guess in the older days, the Postie took some care in applying these cancellations, done with preciseness, pride and passion. You don't find too many of these kinds of cancellation nowadays.

Belgium newspaper stamps? Like the cancellations. Wonder whether the word DEPART refers to something other than a town or is it department? Any information on this?

guess the above is a little on the large size. Back to the drawing board. It is however a nice socked on the nose cancellation.

This is a card from the German Occupation of the Soviet Union.
Dates from around 1942
The German cancel top right is from the German Official Post Office at Wesenberg.
The stamp is cancelled with a Russian (Cyrillic) single line cancel for "Wesenberg".
Clearly philatelic (it's surprising how much of this type of thing the Nazis did considering the circumstances...)

sandgroper great strike - .. did you try re-sizing it via

www.photobucket.com?

Or even if you cropped back off either side using a free program like google Picasa it would fit page far better!

The original KGV scan was very crooked, with far too much black on either side. As I suggested -

http://picasa.google.com/download/thanks.html

Picasa is a free google program, and to repeat my original advice, to take THAT to photobucket.com gives us this permanent and free image:

Bill you got to hit that "IMG" button for it to load!

And add it to the RELEVANT thread for the photo of course.

Your scan has zippo to de with postmarks I'd say. :)

I knew I screwed up and in disgust gave up, got out a bottle of port and sat by the fire. Woke up at 3am thinking I forgot to hit the img button. Will try again once the port wears off. !!

here's a modern one from the toilet down the back of 29.

Notice no postcode. Must have had a broken datestamper. Not into relief postmarks, another area of study that I'm not into yet.

Here's a couple of my favorites.

The first is a really nice TPO of WA cancel:

Image

And the second is a cinderella: a fantastic strike from the old Southern Brewery Company from 100 years ago in Albany, Western Australia. What adds to this, is the stamp is a 15 shilling IR overprint of which only 1200 where ever printed!
A unique item ! 8)

Australian stamps with a "Yandina/British Solomon Islands" cancel.

Don't know anything about it, but I just like things that are used where they shouldn't be.

For instance, I've got a "Morocco Agencies" used in the Scottish Islands (same recipient as this, I think). I'll try to post a scan of that later.

This is the one I mentioned in the previous post...

Morocco Agencies used in Harris in the Hebrides off Northern Scotland.

Why?

To Browny,

Those are two gems, old mate. The second one should go into RARE STAMPS. A genuine Fiscal used fiscally.

p.s. Don't let BoB see it or he'll be over to the west in a flash, then instead of getting a postcard from BoB when visited Scuzza in Benalla, it will be Browny in W.A.

Nice detective work there Gav.
With the one from the Solomons, if the journey was from Australia to the Solomons, and it was posted on-board ship, then it is possible that postage from the last Port of Call was acceptable to the authorities.

It's a bit harder to stretch the Moroccan one, but underneath the overprint, it is a British Stamp, maybe somewhat akin to Christmas Islands, Cocos(Keeling) Islands stamps being valid in Australia.

Bit of a time difference between stamps KEVIII to QEII

Thanks, Waroff!

Yes, I presume the first one is effectively a "Paquebot" without actually stating it explicitly.

And, as "Morocco Agencies" was basically "British PO in Morocco" it would be logical to assume that their stamps were valid for use in UK.

I don't suppose there's any real value to either, and they are rather contrived, but they're good fun to me

Bill, very attractive piece that.

A couple more funny ones of mine - same recipient as before.

Moomba Festival and Brisbane Stamp Exhibition.

Note both have gutters attached to some of the stamps.

The writing is not mine, these were part of a collection of NWPI stamps I bought from England.

Can anybody help, What is Hosking, referred to by the writer. Is it a catalogue of some description?

The Moomba one, is for an annual festival held in Melbourne. It used to be held over the week preceeding the Labour Day holiday which is the first Monday in March. Labour Day is nothing to do with our Polictical Party, is was for the unions achieving an 8 hour working day. The slogan was eight hours work, eight hours recreaton and eight hours sleep.
On the Monday, there was a big parade down the main N-S street in Melbourne, with many floats and entertainers. It was a community event. Associated with it was an Art Show, performances in the gardens surrounding Melbourne and a world class water-ski competition on the Yarra River. The Yarra River was featured on the Australia 1956 Olympic Games stamps.

Bill,

Thanks for the backgound - I'll keep a printed copy of your posting with the cover. :D

I always think that finding out the background to these things gives a greater appreciation! 8)

BTW - did you also notice that cancel is from a "Mobile Post Office" :?:

Yes, these were setup by the PO to handle souvenir mail from people attending the parade. I think they were in a caravan just off the main street in one of the E_W streets. I think Collins Street which is on the other 1956 OLympic Games stamps. Remember the PO were closed in Melbourne/Victoria on the day due to it being a public holiday. Even then the PO didn't miss a chance to make a BoB (1/-).
As for the Queersland one, I don't know, someone from up North maybe able to answer that one.
