Continuing through South America.....

On the north east coast of South America are the "three Guianas", British, Dutch and French Guiana. Of these only Dutch Guiana, more properly known as Suriname issued stamps in 1962.

Like a number of countries, Suriname issues a set of stamps to commemorate the second Secretary General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjöld, who died in a plane crash in Africa in 1961.

Image

Hammarskjold was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, as highlighted in the marginal inscription of the 12 stamp sheetlets that comprise the issue:

The Royal Silver Wedding of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard was celebrated with a single stamp with the same design as the Dutch stamps:

Another set highlighted the world wide campaign against Malaria.

Brazil is one of the largest countries in the world, both in terms of land area and population. In 1962 it had a stamp issuing program of some 14 commemorative issues, although all were single stamp issues.....

Firstly, from left to right:
- World Meteorological Day
- 50th anniversary of the climbing of the mountain Dedo de Deus (the "finger of God")
- Centenary of the introduction of the metric system
- 13th Brazilian Championships for Snipe Class Sailing
- 140th anniversary of independence

Image

(I really need to upgrade the condition of these)

I must admit I found Peru to be one of the more difficult countries in my 1962 collection.

The difficulty wasn't because the stamps were particularly expensive or hard to find, but more because my catalogues couldn't agree on what was issued and when :(

For example, this stamp, issued to mark the 2nd International Pacific Fair in 1961...
Image

Gibbons (2008) lists this as issued in 1961. Scott (2008) lists it as January 1962. My old 1968 Gibbons lists it as April 1962 - so it's included.

A nice issue to mark the Centenary (in 1961) of Pomabamba province:

Image

Gibbons lists this as also coming in an airmail version with slightly different colours - Scott just lists the stamp above. To date I haven't been able to find an airmail version, but it may exist so the jury is out :?

This pair were intended for voluntary use to help finance the 6th National Eucharistic Congress in 1960...

Image

They were authorised for use on postage for one day only (10 August 1960). They were re-authorised for postal use in July 1962 and went on sale for that purpose then - so I have included them. Gibbons and Scott both list them as 1960, but Scott also notes the reauthorisation for 1962.

Hello Peter,

I have just found your tour of the world in 1962 and have enjoyed it immensely. What a task. You have done so well putting it all together. Not only would the chase for all the stamps be a challenge, but to find out all that went on around the world (portrayed in stamps) in that year would be fascinating.

It has given me something to seriously think about while I am putting my stamp collection in some sort of chaotic order and I will always be on the lookout for my birth year.

Thank you for taking the time to show it on stampboards.

Hi Maisy, glad you like the tour. About time I continued........

Time for Bolivia :D

Bolivia is a land locked country in central South America (although it does have access to the Atlantic via the Paraguay River. Once it had a Pacific coastline but lost its Pacific Coast territory to Chile in the "War of the Pacific" in 1879.

In 1962 Bolivia issued a nice set to celebrate its armed forces:

Image

Two years later a military junta overthrew the Government

A set was issued to mark the 4th National Eucharistic Congress (held in 1961).

Bolivia also issued the almost obligatory anti-Malaria set:

The Portraits series of 1961 was continued...

The World Refugee Year set from Bolivia was IMHO one of the more depressing issues of 1960. It was surcharged and re-released in 1962 :?

I've covered Paraguay in an earlier post so it's on to Uruguay...

Just four sets issued by Uruguay in 1962. First a couple of sets to commemorate past Presidents:

Firstly General Jose Fructuoso Rivera:

and also Bernado P Berro:

One of the more remarkable aspects of Chile is its shape - at about 4,300 km long and on average 175 km wide it is very long and skinny. Not that that has anything to do with its stamps issues - I just find it interesting :D

From the outsiders point of view probably the most interesting thing about Chile in 1962 was that it hosted the Football World Cup - this was the only event to warrant a separate commemorative stamp issue:

Most other Chilean stamp issues were additions to various existing definitive series.

Firstly three additions to the 1960 definitive series:

Image

These feature from left:
- Choshvenco Volcano
- Maule River Valley
- Inca Lake

Next, two extra stamps for the 1960 - 1962 Airmail series to promote the national airline:

Image

These feature an aeroplane over Antarctica and "Arch Rock"

The 1960 - 1965 series to mark the 150th anniversary of the 1st National Government was expanded by two stamps featuring the "Palace of Justice":

The 1960 - 1967 Airmail definitive series was also expanded by two:

These feature a:
- "Jet over Easter Island"
- Beechcraft monoplane

Finally Chile recycled a souvenir sheet (printed on thin card) that was originally issued in 1960 to mark a regional conference of Rotary. In 1962 the souvenir sheet was overprinted in green with a slogan and outline of a mosquito to promote the worldwide campaign to eradicate malaria:

Next time I wrap up the Americas with the stamps of Argentina :D :D

PETER -- Thanks --- your "dissertation" about 1962 stamps from Peru was quite interesting. I am in the process of building an online catalogue for Peruvian stamps.... it should be complete by August. You can see it here: http://www.stampsperu.com

If you have any scans of stamps that you don't find on my website, or if you have better pictures, please send them to me!

Cheers,

Thanks for the link Carlos and good luck with the website :D

It has been a very busy 2009 and I have neglected this thread far too long......

In my 1962 world tour we have covered the countries shaded in this map so far:
- Pages 1 & 2 of the thread are shaded in RED
- Pages 3& 4 are shaded in BLUE
- Page 5 is shaded in GREEN

Now back to Argentina

Argentina experienced political turmoil in 1962 with President Arturo Frondizi being deposed in a coup that year. The country's stamp issuing authorities continued their love of long running definitive series though, with the following additions to the 1959 definitive series....

Image

Definitive stamps of the time were also overprinted for Official use:

Argentina issued "semi-postals" as well in 1962.

First an issue to mark the opening of the Argentina 62" Philatelic Exhibition in May (just 7 weeks after the Coup - must have given the organisers a heart attack):

and finally my favourite Argentine set from 1962, the Child Welfare set featuring birds:

Hello Peter ---- You can find a lot of the Peruvian stamps on my recently created website: http://www.stampsperu.com (click on "Search"). Anyway, the Peruvian catalogue "Casanova" (no longer in existence) lists this stamp as the first issue of 1962. Therefore, Scott seems to be more accurate.

Cheers,

CARLOS "carlopeto"

Hi Peter,

There is no airmail version of the "Centenario de Pomabamba" stamp. I think Stanley Gibbons is confusing it with the "Centenario de Pallasca", which was issued about the same time.

Heading east from South America we come to the Falkland Islands which twenty years later were the setting for a brief war between Argentina and Great Britain. In 1962 the Falkland Islands issued just one set of stamps to mark the 50th anniversary of Radio communication...

The continent of Africa was a place of huge changes in the early 1960s with many countries in various stages of the struggle for independence.

South Africa was declared a republic in May 1961. In 1962 the country issued just a few stamps...

Firstly the reissue (on unwatermarked paper) of two stamps from the 1961 definitive series:

Image

also a stamp to mark the 50th anniversary of folk dancing in South Africa...

Image

and finally a set to mark the unveiling of the precinct stone of the British Settlers Monument at Grahamstown.

Basutoland is completely surrounded by South Africa. In 1966 it was to gain its independence and become the Kingdom of Lesotho but in 1962 its only stamp issues were additions to the current definitive series, commenced in 1961:

I'm going to enjoy reading / viewing the whole thing, eventually. A really nice collection, well presented. Ditto to what was said below a year ago. I have also thought of doing this kind of thing (I'm just starting to collect.) But . . . 1953 . . . I'd probably be looking at *tons* of QEII portraits and new definitives. (Maybe not a bad thing) :)

Ngwenyama Sobhuza II became the Paramount Chief of Swaziland way back on December 10, 1899, when he was only a few months old. His grandmother acted as regent until December 22, 1921. His nominal reign of 82 years, 9 months is the longest precisely dated monarchical reign on record. Sobhuza's personal reign of over 60 years (1921-82) saw Swaziland's independence from Great Britain in 1968, after which he was styled King of Swaziland.

We know what King Sobhuza was up to in 1962 - according to the Swaziland National Trust Commission, "King Sobhuza II married 70 wives, and had 210 children between 1920 and 1970."

Swaziland issued a nice definitive series in 1962:

In 1962 South West Africa (now called Namibia) was disputed territory, with South Africa regarding it as a 5th province whilst the United Nations considered it to be a UN Trust Territory.

The only stamps issued that year were additions to the definitive series. The 3 cent on watermarked paper and the others unwatermarked:

Another long pause - sometime I think I am walking this tour :D

Bechuanaland (now Botswana) didn't issue any stamps in 1962 so now it is on to the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, was a semi-independent state in southern Africa that existed from 1953 to the end of 1963, comprising Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland.

In 1962 it issued four stamps:

The Federation officially ended on 31 December 1963, when Northern Rhodesia gained independence from the UK as the new nation of Zambia and Nyasaland gained independence as the new nation of Malawi. Southern Rhodesia became known as Rhodesia and is now Zimbabwe.

What an interesting collection! My sister & brother-in-law mentioned my getting their kids a set of Mint Canadian stamps for each of their birth years and I promptly forgot their suggestion.

Now you have reminded me of that idea for my nieces & nephews and got me thinking about doing my own year "1959". I collect worldwide and sometimes it gets very overwhelming in the details.

Doing a specific year collection for my own enjoyment and knowledge sounds like a great project along with the one I want to do on Owls.

Hopefully I will be able to do it justice like you did for yours. (Since I saw Carlos' website on Peru, I guess I will start there! :) )

I'm glad you like the collection Missvicki. Good luck with 1959 :D

You have reminded me of this thread which I have long neglected.....but no more! There is a long way to go on the tour.

I have already covered the stamps of Angola and Mozambique, and Bechuanaland (now Botswana) didn't issue any stamps in 1962, so I'll take a detour east into the Indian Ocean.

East of the African continent is the fourth largest island in the world which now comprises the Republic of Madagascar. In 1962 it was a relatively young country, known as the Malagasy Republic, having gained its independence from France in 1960.

President Philibert Tsiranana was the first president of the new republic and ruled from 1060 until 1972. Like a lot of politicians he wanted to be remembered - hence the "President Tsiranana bridge" opened in 1962:

Like a lot of young countries, the Malagasy Republic issued stamps in 1962 to demonstrate progress, modernisation and their place in the world....
