I have some seals or post marks that I would like to know about.

I have no idea what they are, they look like something legal but I picked them up some years ago when buying a collection on Ebay.

Can anyone help me to identify what they are?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How about doing a close up of one them? Too small to really make detail in anything.

They looks as cut-outs of France stamped papers. But enlarged scans of each piece may be helpful.

They are revenue stamps that were stamped directly on the paper.
Instead of affixing a detached stamp, people were stamping it. It was used mainly by "notaires" (notaries). Yours look like they come from the IIIrd Republic (1871-1940) before any close-up.

Hi All,

I just wanted to attach some other samples of these "Stamped paper" used from a long date in France, and maybe in other countries.

This is how mint ones look like (year about 1880) :
Image

There is a watermark ( Oval on this one "PAPIER TIMBRE" with in in centre year 1880).
This stamped paper was used by notaries for transactions depending on the value in question, here it's from 100 Francs and more.
In addition of the stamp there is a control "Relief stamping" under it. It indicates "Enregistrement Timbre et Domaines" with the value of the stamp 5 cents.

Here are details of the "Stamp" :

This is a sample of this type of stamped paper, many types of paper and stamps exist.
Very old ones are more attractive specially when they are unused, like this one coming from south of France "Bigorre" I think in late years 16xx, it has also a watermark with "Fleur de Lys" the royal emblem for this period :

I am not a specialist of these stamped papers, in fact I don't collect them, I got them as curiosity items.

Here are more scans of these items I have in my albums :

If there is any interest I can make more detailed scans.

Regards.

Billys,

You've mixed up different stamps:
- Généralités (Gén. or G.), Expéditions and Minutes were used before the Revolution, until 1793. They are revenue stamps.
- From 1793, these revenue stamps have been modified and Rép. Fra. (République Française) was written inside the circles or squares.
- You are showing stamps that are not fiscal at all but just administrative: Mairie d'Oloron or Paris. They have no fiscal use.

Hi Baboon,

Yes you are right, few of these stamped paper are administrative ones.
As I said in my previous post, I don't collect them, I consider that they are curiosities.
Once I got a lot of stamps and between there was these stamped papers.
The first stamp on my 4th scan is an administrative one "Oloron Mairie".
3 stamps on the 5th scan are also administrative "Paris" & "Seine".

Could you please indicate us (if possible) how to make the difference between revenues and administrative stamped papers.
How anyone should collect them (complete form or cutouts).
Do you know about a reference site or book where we can find identification of these stamped papers, specially oldest ones ?

Regards.

Billys.

Excellent response to my question. I was going to scan close up pictures but in the light of the full details provided I think it is not now needed.
Thank you to everyone for the help.
