You've obviously never worked as a postman.

Surely a pen size self inking one could be made?

Could easily be done as self inking cancels are already made and the principle of such postmarks where already in use around 1900 in the Netherlands and Belgium as far as I know.

Image
Size of the postmark is about 1,6 cm wide and 0,8 cm high

Each number in a town was linked to a postman so if you had complains the manager of the postoffice could see on the number who messed up

These days in the Netherlands it would cost to much to make them as I have a different mailman/woman on everyday of the week.

If "E 32" cancel stayed with one person the system would work no matter what run or beat they used in any week.

True.

Only the costs of the postmarks would get up as around 1900 you had one person running the same area 7 days a week. These days you have six different persons (mostly students to earn a extra Ć¢ā€šĀ¬) running the same area in a week time. And PostNL knowing these days it would be a no go.

Less costs, more profit and as the top CEO (of PostNL former TNT) said we don't give a (at)#$% about collectors!

So realistic seen I don't expect these things back in the Dutch philately for a long time :(

Lucky you Librarianc, at least they only used a pen!

I have recieved quite a number of parcels (6) lately that have no cancellation marks on them. Unusual I know! Our local postmaster 'cancelled' 4 of them with a nice big texta :( and then had the cheek to tell me to contact the people who had sent the articles to make sure they were properly cancelled before leaving their PO. :?

I ended up telling him that it was NOT my responsibility to ensure correct cancellation but that of the sending PO, and to stop ruining my stamps with his texta!

I have since recieved another two parcels....with no cancellations and NO texta :D

Of course.
But the postie already has a pen in his pocket, and uses it all the time for redirections in the office, and leaving 'while you were out' cards when on the round. What can be easier, with the pen behind your ear, to just whip it out and scribble through the stamps.

Aside from the cost of supplying several thousand of these self-inking doo-dahs, there's no time for f**ting around doing what should have been done either at the counter (for registered items) or in the sorting office (for machineable mail).

You don't solve a problem by making somebody do more work, you solve it by correcting the fault that causes the problem in the first place. Or not: which is why they try to make the most-used stamps non-re-usable by putting slits in them (Spain, UK, Sweden) and making them unsoakable (UK, USA, ...?).

Precisely, in other words you go back to the original PO and make sure they do their job!

Then the recieving PO wouldn't have to use pen or texta!

Of course, you can do what I do and take the item into the PO and get it canceled. Then all you have to worry about is the dreaded inkjet!

Recently had to mail home a large heavy carton filled with stamps, books and clothes purchased whilst away in SURFERS PARADISE .... Had so much luggage it was going to cost a fortune to bring home on the plane as it exceeded my baggage limit.

Luckily, I used some nice stamps

The cardboard piece was too large for scanner so took some pics instead :)

Nice $12 FU Colours of Cocos Keeling Islands sheet was used :D

Great idea, might have to try that when we go up to Townsville next week! I'm sure I'll find plenty of things that I won't be able to carry back on the plane! Problem solved    Anne

This is a great modern one from Australia Post.

Colours of Cocos Keeling Islands -- Issued September, 2011

20 x 60c stamps - $12 face. Broken up a few sheets and used them on mail outs. Used a full sheet on a parcel to Glen Stephens VFU/CTO with full gum. Along with a gutter block of 10 x 45c stamps.

Lightly cancelled 'Kingston TAS 7050'

Nothing fancy, but nice anyway. I like how the plane in the stamp at left is circling round the monument.

Tassie Stamps kindly used one of these CTO under plastic on a parcel to me recently.

Agree with him (as per my Stamp News column last month) that these USED are worth way over face value, so please add to the world supply folks and MAIL them!

Good to see some members heeding my advice to use such things on mail - essentially FREE POSTAGE to us all if we all do that.

It's also nice to see that you can actually use stamps on mail. Recently I went to the local post office (agency) with some mail that was partly plastered with stamps and asked for the balance of the overseas postage - in stamps. This was beyond the scope of the person at the counter who had to refer to his boss who advised me that they could use a print out label but they could not sell me stamps! In shock I quietly exited and went to another local post office where I was able to get the requisite balance for my overseas mailings and get them posted.

Methinks that the process of privatisation of postal agencies does not bode well for nice usages of stamps.

Keep up the good work though while you can and get some real usages of stamps for future generations - already I fear many values don't exist used aside from FDCs and CTO remainders (and they are not really used as they did not see any postal service).

Thanks for the kind words, C.W.

Like light cancels?

Try challenging the postal clerk, "Bet you can't cancel that whole envelope with just one inking..."

They fall for it every time.

Seems to happen to me when I take a holiday. Even if I'm somewhere that I don't collect the stamps of, I'll stop by the philatelic counter and pick up a range of all the commems available. When I receive the parcel (always feels a bit odd seeing something again that I've mailed away  ) I soak the stamps to give away to junior collectors, or if nothing else they go in the kiloware shoebox.

Here's two more mailing suggestions, for everybody - saves a lot of damage and disappointment:

1. When sending a parcel of stamps, do the address LAST. Then you don't have to try to fit the stamps around the address which you unwisely wrote FIRST. :?

2. Place all stamps you're using for postage AT LEAST 3cm from the edge of the envelope or mailer. Stuff on the edge gets nailed and flailed, and it's all so unnecessary. Leave some bending and rending space!

I will remember that, and leave 2 inches clearance on the
right side of my parcels. First I'd seen that marking.

You, too, can have nice franking. Just buy something.

I get the impression that the CEO of Australia Post would FAINT if he saw all these stamps being USED on letters and parcels!

"...but, er, um, you're, uh, supposed to keep them MINT in little books, not USE them, uh, aren't you? I mean, if you USE them, we have to process that piece of mail, don't you see? Where's the percentage in that?"

What a great bunch of stamps to use as franking. :D

Shame they aren't lightly cancelled with a CDS - this usage however makes the stamps look 'commercially' used as opposed to philatelic, which some collectors would prefer.

Quite unique to get them all together. Super looking.

You're very welcome Portbelly. Whoever cd them in Carol Stream sure had an axe to grind! Thankfully, it doesn't look like he had lots of ink on his pad, but he sure did put a punishment on those stamps...and this was hand carried to the postmaster, who is himself a collector...and NOT in Carol Stream...hmmmm. Christmas makes for strange routes.

Seeing the $2 Bobcats on this piece - reminded me of the $2 Bobcat sheet with missing black color - whatever happened to those, did they sell at auction?
