I've just noticed that we have reached the milestone of 2.5 million posts and 7,500+ members. I see that this has taken about 5 years.

I see that we have 2 very busy posters GUTTERS 800000+ posts and WEIRD AL 500000+ These very busy posters have made over 50% of the total posts on this site.

Good to see the board ticking over solidly - we often have 200 people on line these days, as you will see at the base of the home page.

Hopefully all members take the time to try and spread the word to other friends in the stamp world.

We consistently get about 500 new members each quarter. Real members - all have their IP screened before activating etc.

So the 10,000 members milestone is about 2 years off!

4,500 June 24 2010 (102 days)
5,000 September 14 2010 (92 days)
5,500 January 4 2011 (112 days)
6,000 March 29 2011 (84 days)
6,500 June 30 2011 (93 days)
7,000 October 21 2011 (113 days)
7,500 January 17 2012 (88 days)

That is fantastic news.

I have always wondered how many of the 7500+ members are active?
By active, I mean posting at least once per month.

Cheers!

We seem to have hundreds, maybe even a thousand that have either one post, or haven't posted anything! :(

We have (or have had) 4,414 members who have made at least one post and 3,213 members who have made at least 2 posts.

That would be approximately 60% of members that make at least one post per month.
Makes you wonder what the other 40% is doing.

Cheers!

Approximately 60% of users have posted at least once since they joined. The percentage posting at least once a month will be very much less.

It's great that there are over 2.5 million posts and 7500+ members (although there are quite a few who have never posted anything :( )

P.S. This is my 100th post. :D :D

Thanks for clearing that up.
I thought that the numbers you had posted earlier were referring to posts per month and not since joining.

Cheers!

I've just been looking at the member details and the number of postings made, and below are some of the details.

3101 <1 posts
4302 <2 posts
4745 <3 posts
5037 <4 posts
5254 <5 posts
5438 <6 posts
5796 <10 posts

I also noticed when I checked a few minutes ago that 169 people appeared to be on the site, but only 22 were registered, 146 were guests and one was hidden.

We do always get a large number of guest visitors. These are made up of:

1. people just looking who aren't members yet.
2. members that are having a quick look to see what's happening but don't log in.
3. visitors such as Google, Yahoo, Baidu, etc. who, by using automated spider bots, index every website to constantly update their databases.

Congratuations on your 100th post.

What you have bracketed above is actually quite normal, as is the curve of members who rarely/never post. I have been on BB's since the 1990's, and yes, many people join Boards and never post, or post only once or twice and then leave. I have done it myself on Boards that I decided I did not like. The Bell curve on our Board is no different than most other BB's.

With a tiny Board such as we are, and with the niche market stamps have in the wider Community, we are often the first Google hit for people who have only one or two questions. Thus, they Google, they come, they ask their question, then they leave.

This applies to people who have somehow got hold of a collection, and think it is worth Trillions, somebody who has found a biscuit tin of stamps on the side of a road, Bradman stamps in his boot, an Inverted Jenny in a $5 junk lot, the good old "Grandpa's collection in the attic", just plain trolls (No Board is immune from Trolls - They don't last long), or people trying to sell Valium, Porn, Russian Brides, Real Estate, and even furniture.

The other side of this coin is people who regularly look at the threads, but rarely post. As I am an "evil Management person" on the Boards, I will often check who is on-line and their posting history, particularly member names that I am not familiar with by name.

I am often surprised to find out that they have been members from two to four years, have only maybe 5 or 8 posts, but still read, rather than post, then look and discover the quality of their posting history, which is often superb. Their choice of course, and there is nothing we can do about it. I know of a near founding member (getting on to 5 years ago now) who rarely posts but reads stuff on most days.

But to get back to basics, we are no different than 99.9% of Public Domain BB's on the planet as far as member/post/guest ratios go, except for the counting threads.

Like all boards we have a ton of members who join and never post.

Or, join, make their initial "Welcome" post and no others.

They are happy to be "lurkers" - to read info, and never contribute.

Naturally no board survives if everyone does that. So all members are urged to add their posts to topics of interest, and the board gets busier still. 8)

However our stats show that way over 10% of all members have made 50 or more posts.

Over 600 have made more than 100 posts, and about 150 members are at 1000 posts or more.

Very healthy sign.

It's a great milestone. Well done to everyone. :D

So many boards are complete rubbish. They only have 20 members, all of which never contribute, meaning that the only posts are for discount Viagra and rolex watches.

I think Stampboards is a great community. Plenty of friendly members willing to share knowledge. It's good for this hobby. There is also a lot of generosity to younger members, by helping them add to their collection for free.

It's fantastic when an online community gets along well, and is willing to give assistance to others.

Compared to the majority of members on this board, I am quite young, but do thoroughly enjoy the time I spend on here. :)

And how time flies - I'll look at Stampboards and before I know it, a whole hour has passed!

Well done to Glen and his Admin team for keeping the quality of this site high. Members appreciate it.

If you want to cure an illness, don't just put a plaster (bandage) on it, target the cause. Thus the Mod Squad here activate each member manually one-by-one.

Auto-registration is what allows in the spammers. Don't cross Margo or Brummie, who do most activations, "ve knoh vhere you live",, no not really, but you can be blocked if you decide to try making extra money selling "magic pills". And they check all applicants against a global spammer database and that IP's match.

I've certainly learned a lot about new areas since joining--Lakatois, Aussie State cancels, the Uglies.

Mind you, the 'downside' to that is when I'm trolling online auctions, there's a lot more potential 'bargains' I know to keep an eye out for, and end up spending more.

Not to mention finding others who collect the same area I do, has given the chance for threads for "you show me yours, I'll show you mine" 8) . But it also means that when I'm in a 'bidding war' for an item on eBay, I have to wonder "is this a Board member I'm up against?" A bit of sportsmanlike competition (without any doping scandals  ).

Time does pass quickly when you're surfing Stampboards, but its "time well wasted".

Just a few stats to add to the above:

 Last January (2011) we gained 208 new members.
 Of those 71 have not made a post and a further 49 have made less than 10 posts.
 On the positive side, during the last 11 months, one of those new members made 686 posts and others made 311, 267, 165, 152, 136 and 118.
 That leaves 81 who made from 10 to 99 posts.

A quick look at the date those January 2011 members last visited the Board shows:

 21 have visited this year
 16 others last visited in the last quarter of 2011.

This means that nearly 20% of the group are still active on the Board and the number who made double-figure posts is well above the five year average.

I don't post a lot, but I enjoy reading the posts on here, I find you can spend an hour on here and not even realise the time has gone. I have learnt so much from just reading other people's posts and looking at the pictures, it is like a big library.
