On reflection I may be wrong as the CORREIO is not centered. If you can work out what the letters above it are, we might be able to do more.

Hello,

The handstamp of the second stamp showed by huanga, is not a Spanish one. I think is a Portugueese one: "CORREIO". In spanish correct words for Post Office are : "CORREO", or more usually their plural "CORREOS".

I can´t see very well the text above, I think their 3 last characters are: "...ÇAO". But this string has at least 7 characters.

Cheers

Rai. I have had a look under a strong light and the word is.'CORREIO.' I guess that returns the stamp to Macau.

Hello huanga,

Here is an image filtered with photoshop to help us. I can see "...EÇAO".

You need the opinion of a Portugal expert, I think

I really like this one. And yes, I'm aware it was used at a British P.O., so not technically 'wrong place', but still unusual and (to me) spectacular):

Since the original stamp is from St. Lucia, may I suggest Fort-de-France (receiving mark), capital of nearby Martinique? That may give a clue to the other word, which I haven't deciphered yet.

Thank you Doug!

You have steered me to the answer, it is Fort de France Martinique to Cayenne - French Guiana

Thanks again

It may be a ship cancel, from a regular run from Fort-de-France to Cayenne. There are 2 more letters at the bottom of the cancel, in front of "Fort" that we haven't accounted for yet.

A simple receiving mark at Cayenne would not make reference to Fort-de-France, would it?

IF an obscure SON ship cancel, this stamp has the potential to be quite valuable; not only a perfect postmark, but off-country as well.

Surely someone on SB has the book on 19th Century French maritime cancels.

I have a Victorian State state stamp with a Tasmanian Barred Numeral cancel..

The Barred Numeral cancel (((52))) is of Launceston, Tasmania.. I won this stamp on ebay with some others at Auction.. I thought the BN cancel was of JANEFIELD - Rated RRRR.. So did the other bidder obviously, as we took this up into the $45.00 mark, so I paid way too much for the Lot I won (I wish I knew then what I know now !!).. The BN cancel of Janefield in Victoria is totally different and only has 2 side bars ((52))

So I fell for the trap, only being armed with a tiny bit of knowledge about BNs.. Thanks to mcgooley here in Stampboards my knowledge has evolved 10 fold..

French stamps overprinted "Alexandrie" did not appear until 1899, so maybe French stamps were the norm until the turn of the century.

What was the alternative in 1879, using Egyptian stamps and its primitive postal system?

HI Doug, that's spot on. The French Post Office in Alexandria used French stamps for many years until it got its own stamps.

The "New Britain Corporation" managed coconut plantations on Bougainville (part of German New Guinea), adjacent to the northern British Solomon Islands (BSI), preceding the Australian occupation in 1914.

Similar to the situation at Morobe, where the district office expediently sent occupation/regular mail through Ioma, Papua (see example below) rather than the circuitous routing to Rabaul and then Australia, here the business sent mail through Shortland, BSI to meet the ships running between Tulagi and Australia - again not wanting to send anything through Rabaul.

--------------------

From an item cancelled at Morobe, with the captured German administration hand stamp, then carried overland by a "Police" runner and accepted by the Papua administration (with whom the Australian Forces had an agreement to use this routing) at Ioma and forwarded.

Image
Image

--------------------

Many of the items seen, addressed to The New Britain Corporation, have only NWPI overprinted stamps franking the covers. This one has a combination of stamps.

Possibly franked with the BSI 1d Geo V stamp by the district office in Kieta, Bougainville or by the captain of the vessel that carried the cover or by the Solomons administration at Shortlands.

I got this unusual item from a fellow Stampboarder:
An Australian and Hong Kong stamp together posted in the Aussie mail. Obviously a postcard that was meant to have been posted inn Hong Kong, but still very interesting:

Stamps of Slovenia, used on a post card to the USA from Italy.

San Martino di Lupari is in the modern state of Venice. Bled (yuck, who named the town?) is the subject of this pretty postcard, and located in Slovenia. An Italian tourist mailed it after she got home from Bled.

Two Victorian Victoria stamps. SG246a postmarked 'Dunfdin' which means the postal clerk was hurried, or could not spell Dunedin? SG305a postmarked Bluff, which is about as far south on the mainland as you can go.

Image

To return the favour two pairs of New Zealand stamps post marked Sydney. SG405 and SG468.

It is usually restricted to official business correspondence. Like most postal history items, they are collectible. Mail that was sent from US Embassies or Consulates that uses postage of the host country but sent via diplomatic pouch to Washington's Department of State is of great interest to US collectors. It was usually stamped by the State Department's Mail Room: "This article originally mailed in country indicated by postage" . The practice was ended in the late '50s.

As nobody has yet responded, it is a ship cancel.

The bottom two letters are L.C. which stands for Ligne C, which was the regular run from Fort de France to Cayenne, and return (which would have used a cancel Cayenne a Fort de France).

According to my source this line had a post office from 1865 to 1940, and ran from Fort de France via St. Lucia, Port of Spain, Demerara, and Paramaribo to Cayenne.

This particular octagon cancel was in use from 1901 to 1935.

Hi Stampers, I picked this up the other day on ebay and am still waiting for it to arrive, but my curiosity has got the better of me

I am wondering if this cancel is "Bristol", "Brighton" or perhaps another place in England..

Any information on the cancel would be appreciated..

Oh well, it didn't cost me much :P

Thanks again for your help Peter

As a matter of reference, no operational postmarks in the UK have ENGLAND (or Scotland, or Wales) at the foot.

Taking a liberty with this one which I assume is commonplace. Geelong, Victoria Double Ring on a Queensland pair of stamps. There's a TPO in there as well though I can't quite make it out.

Donald, not as common as you would think. Stamps from the various States were not usable in other States till 1910 and were never sold by other State Post Offices. This was even though they were Commonwealth issues (in effect), since the Post Office became a Commonwealth responsibility at Federation (from March 1901).

Thanks for your reply Peter. This one looks like it's 1910 so legitimate usage ? Pity I can't make out the TPO.

This one is perhaps from a grey area also:

It's an SG 1 of Las Bela State, postmarked Karachi.

Las Bela was a State in Baluchistan, northwest of Karachi. Around 1900 when this stamp was used, there was no British Indian post office in Las Bela, so the ruler of Las Bela organised a mail run from Las Bela down to Karachi, the nearest major centre in British India. In fact, he maintained a Las Bela State Post Office in Karachi. The Karachi office also received, and postmarked, mail going to Las Bela, and forwarded it on. This stamp is an example of this use of Las Bela State stamps in what was, strictly speaking, British India.

In other places there are boxes postal markings reading LOOSE LETTER.
I think these were applied to mail handed in by ship's captains as distinct from those already postmarked in the originating country and sent in a sack. Although there doesn't seem to be room for this to read 'LOOSE LETTER', it may just be 'LOOSE' - which everybody who need to would know the meaning of at that time.
