Why is there an added label with the amount $0.00? I've seen that on other letters posted on SB too.

Why? As America is totally paranoid about 'security' of course!

NOTHING can be mailed in a blue street side box weighing over 1 lb or 500 grams approx, even if correctly franked. They DESTROY it if you try. I kid you not.

So you MUST lodge it at a PO, and even if correctly franked you get a "0.00" meter as shown.

Like the ever worsening and absurd airport security, a total waste of time and money, and BOTH are knee-jerk 'closing the barn door after the horse has bolted'.

It was introduced after the Anthrax mailings scare. Why you can't mail Anthrax in a packet handed over a PO counter did not occur to the clueless idiots who made up the rule of course.

It does seem rather silly. And why would Anthrax necessarily weigh over 500 g??

Give that man a ceegar.

A 14 oz packet of Anthrax would still wipe out the White House. And is still legal to pop into any blue mailbox.

Why make me take my belt and shoes off for every flight, when me or others can still grab and break a wine bottle/s in flight, and easily take over any plane? Far more potent and serious a weapon than the stamp tweezers these cretins take off me every flight.

Or use the 50 lb fire exhinguishers on any plane etc, etc to take over the plane.

Why? Because no-one with any brains is in charge of decision making. And Ma and Pa Kettle in Kentcuky who fly once a decade, feel safe that someone wants they to take off their belt.

ABSOLUTELY. "They could be a deadly weapon Sir". Grandmas of course with foot long sharp point metal knitting needles are fine. Go figger.

Glen,

You'll have to get one of those new-fangled PLASTIC tweezers that won't set off the alarm....and if they haven't been invented yet, there's a project for you :)

And, by the way; when you do mail something from the PO, you have to watch that they don't plaster that $0 label right across the stamps you've just carefully put on your package...I've had to do that a couple of times too!

When I send a package, especially to SB-er's, I leave a space about 1 by 3 inches in the upper-right corner specifically for the sticky label. Westerville clerks are very cooperative in carefully placing the label inside the lines; they now realize I know more about rates and regulations than they do, and we are all great buddies. It took 3 years to train them, and now we're almost in Year 7.

Next Saturday is the 7th anniversary of my moving from Jacksonville (Florida) to Westerville, longest I ever lived one place in my life.

As for airport security, my Mom some years ago went on a trip with friends from Melbourne, Australia to Christchurch NZ back to Hobart, Tasmania then return to Melbourne. She had with her a pair of nail scissors that were confiscated as she arrived BACK in Melb.

That's another "go figger".

I LOVE the $10 Kakadu .... Most collectors sigh and say they are common... Well, you're welcome to think that. Let me know which dealers have bulk stock of these if they are so common??

Well there's another one to fuel the wrangling "dealers should use nice recent stamps on mail", "big companies don't have the time to lick-stick tonnes of low-values", "I don't want a bunch of 30 year old stamps on mail".

This looks like a Regency-Superior catalogue? They must outsource their catalogue mailings so some low-paid people are set to work stamping envelopes. I used to get their catalogues which they 'thoughfully' used Columbian reprint M/S on, but then the M/S were always put so close to the envelope edge they'd be completely damaged.

Yep. I though it was great just seeing stamps on mail. I tossed it in my kilo-to-be box. I'm more of a current usage guy myself, but

What and where is that feature you use to block out the address on the covers?

Hello,
Not familiar with Australian Post rules for CTO's. Are these valid for postage, or were they added as nice looking "extras"? Am I getting them confused with the old fashioned definition of CTO as government excess?
Thanks,
Pat

Agree with him (as per my Stamp News column last month) that these USED are worth way over face value, so please add to the world supply folks and MAIL them!

Good to see some members heeding my advice to use such things on mail - essentially FREE POSTAGE to us all if we all do that.

Hi Pat,

It was me who used this as franking on a parcel to Glen. :)

Image

In Australia, the PO will use up old stamps by CTO-ing them, however these are brand new stamps I purchased at full face value from my local PO and had them lightly cancelled, they still have full gum and then I carefully placed the sheet inside a plastic sheet protector, with cardboard backing to protect it in transit. :D

Works well, if you have friendly PO staff it's worth a try. :)

Tassie,
The cancels looked so perfect on the gutter strip in the scan, and Glen mentioned CTO, so I thought them to be CTO in the regular way. Instead, they were canceled to order in a nice way.
Thanks,
Pat

Received a catalogue this week from a UK dealer, was totally expecting a boring label, instead I got this nice cover:

For some, the Machins may be boring, but I kind of liked receiving this, and I don't even collect GB stamps - beats a label ANYDAY!

Donald, value of that 30 year old definitive junk about $5 on a very good day.

Value of a corner block of the $20 Definitive with a central cancel, near face.

You were conned.

I've seen the kind of stuff you send out Glen and that lot sure is nothing near how you do it. Do you agree though that it adds up to A$35.37 face value or am I missing something out on those labels ? Like how could it Justifiably be A$84.70 ?

Like a lot of people he's busy using up stamps with a monetary value rather than NVIs which will appreciate by 20-40% very soon.

3 x 12p stamps = one 2nd class letter now, and only 72% of a 2nd class letter next month.

I'm glad the Locomotives of Scotland miniature sheet got through unscathed. The handstamps (and ink pad) at our local PO are not very good, and on darker stamps especially I am always concerned that a pen-cancel will be applied as well :(

A self-inking datestamp would be useful, but the postmaster refused to pay for new ones when the date wheel needed changing. Can't imagine why Post Office Ltd charge their contract postmasters for datestamps.

But, I recently flew from Perth to Sydney. After I'd been through security at Perth I saw a sign with all the prohibited pictures on it and thought, blimey I'd better declare what's in my handbag before I get on the plane.

I walked back to the xray area holding out my aerosol deoderant and cigarette lighter (husband thought I'd be crash tackled  )
the man just looked at them and said put them back in your bag luv.
I guess I don't look like the hijacking type

I'm glad the Locomotives of Scotland miniature sheet got through unscathed. The handstamps (and ink pad) at our local PO are not very good, and on darker stamps especially I am always concerned that a pen-cancel will be applied as well :(

A self-inking datestamp would be useful, but the postmaster refused to pay for new ones when the date wheel needed changing. Can't imagine why Post Office Ltd charge their contract postmasters for datestamps.

Yes I was happy too to get such a beautiful stamp in very good condition.

Shouldn't the datestamps be part of their supplies? I mean, how can a PO function without it?

I've seen the kind of stuff you send out Glen and that lot sure is nothing near how you do it. Do you agree though that it adds up to A$35.37 face value or am I missing something out on those labels ? Like how could it Justifiably be A$84.70 ?

Yep... Looks like a massive profit on postage there.

The stamps/Framas used are worth $2 the lot as a maximum really. :(

What confuses me as well is that the postage is correctly charged at A$84.70 but there's only A$35.37 on the packet how would that have worked ?

Stamps were perhaps glued on and came off parcel in transit?

That's why they reverted to the previous single-ring and double-ring datestamps with changeable slugs which can produce any date.

"Confuses you"???

It is bleedingly obvious to me just looking at the scan that this moron has used cello-tape all over the parcel then licked total 30 year old junk stamps to it.

Lick a stamp onto glass and see how long it lasts. Many of yours have fallen off as anyone with an IQ over 10 could have predicted - the cancel on top of the $5 clearly shows that.

You paid $85, and got a dollar of 2 of useable franking.

Choose your suppliers with FAR more care is the lesson to all here, for heavy sendings.

NOTHING is a "bargain" if the $85 shipping used is worthless your end.

I mailed a large box today to member here Makielb in the USA. His shipping cost was $55 and I used this $5 "Colonial Heritage" sheet and a booklet. Lightly cancelled, and full gum under protective plastic. His carton is thus essentially "post free".
