Swallow Nest Sheffield

12 September 1968. Double circle handstamp.

Image

Despite being officially in Rotherham, its postal address is in 2012: Swallownest Sheffield, South Yorkshire S26.

Skipton Yorkshire

Only one of the seven postmarks here from Skipton has a stamp. The postmarks on the other six items are transit marks on the backs of envelopes sent to Skipton instead of Shipton and then forwarded on to the right address. No trouble trying to read black text on top of sepia or dark blue stamps with these then. :D

The setting of the town mark alters sometime between 19 December 1970 and 8 November 1971 from the examples here. This posting has the examples with "Skipton Yorkshire" in a large font.

26 September 1968. "Skipton Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales"

Image

18 May 1970. "Remember to use the post code!"

Image

17 December 1970. "Skipton Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales"
18 December 1970. "Skipton Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales"
19 December 1970. "Skipton Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales"
The 17 and 18 are on top of each other - the envelope must have gone round the houses back to Skipton again and then been re-forwarded.

Image
Image
The one with the Scottish 4d stamp was used to send a Christmas card to a non-philatelist from a non-philatelist - a remnant of a holiday in Scotland earlier in 1970?

The view on the pictorial slogans is of the gateway of Skipton Castle.

The County Borough of Teesside only existed between 1968 and 1974. It was made up of towns formerly in the North Riding of Yorkshire or in County Durham. It became part of the County of Cleveland in 1974. Cleveland was abolished in 1996 and was split into four independent unitary authorities - Hartlepool, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough and Redcar-and-Cleveland.

These two examples are from somebody living in Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough still retains the postcode TS1 from the days of Teesside.

It looks like "D." with a full stop instead of just "D" in this example. BUT there is a very faint second postmark and the full stop is part of that postmark (I think :? )

Most towns have a die which includes GREAT BRITAIN or a variant of it. This is to use on unstamped mail which has a 'PAID' marking because it is paid in cash. It can include overseas mail so the use of Great Britain complies with UPU regulations that the country of origin must be shown on the 'stamp'. PAID marks are usually (but not always) applied in red.

Thanks for the information. Postmarks get more and more interesting the more I look at them. :o

And also from York:

25 March 1957. Single circle handstamp

Image

This is a piece of social history. It is stamped on the front of a Motor Fuel Ration Book issued after the Suez Crisis of 1956. Petrol rationing was introduced on 29 November 1956 and ended on 14 May 1957.

Image

Image

There are coupons in a book for 30 "N" units and 15 "L" units for a six months period. There is no definition of what "N" and "L" units in the book. Some of the "N" coupons are for 3 units and some for 2 units. All of the "L" coupons are for 1 unit only. There are different numbers of coupons for the different months. All rather complicated.

All of the Month One coupons have been used - presumably for the month of April. There are only two "L" unit coupons left for Month Two, so the 2 or 3 coupon "N" units must have been used before 14 May 1957.

Two different marks on the same card.

London

15 November 1895. Single circle handstamp

Image

Used 15 November 1895. Postage due 3d cachet

3d F.B. C.

Image

These were used as transit marks on an Italian postal card sent from Firenze (Florence) to Edinburgh. The thing that looks like a stamp on the 'front' is a vignette with three heads of members of the Italian royal family. The whole design commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Liberation of Rome.

The 'stamp' to pay the postage is on the other side and has remained completely unnoticed - not even the Italian postal authorities have cancelled it :!:

It does muddy even further the definition of what is the front and what is the back of a card though.

I have never posted in this thread, so here goes...

These 2 postmarks arrived this week. I searched 'Edinburgh' and 'Jubilee' in the database but I couldn't find these ones:

KT 14 63 (or 53) JUBILEE CFC2 (13 February 2012 - from Camberley, Surrey)
Image

EDINBURGH CFC3 (15 February 2012)
