my (adult) step-daughter and I were having a discussion tonight and realized that we share similar pet peeves - so lets see who shares your top 5. I will start

1. dog eared pages in a book.
2. people who stand in the middle of the aisle in a store so deep in conversation that you almost have to yell to ask them to let you pass by.
3. little girls dressing like adults.
4.music so loud in a passing car that my car shakes.
5.people parking in handicap spaces who clearly does not need it -(I know someone who uses their mother's permit even when she is not in the car) not to mention those that park in them even without a permit

My whinge is how this once great country, Australia is going down the gurgler more and more every day, politicians of all sides, do-gooders, bleeding hearts etc are all out to destroy the place and no one cares, Aussies will wake up when it is too late, which, in my opinion is now!

Some more pet peeves of mine

Customers whinging about prices - Really, $3.50 isn't too expensive for a coffee. Yes, I know that you can make yourself a coffee at home for less than $3.50, if that's the only argument you have then why not stay at home and make your own coffee.

Poor customer service - You don't need to be amazing. But just smile and at least PRETEND to enjoy what you're doing.

Poorly trained staff anywhere - Training staff is not difficult. If you can't train staff, don't open a business. If the staff in a business cannot or will not do their job - get rid of them. There are plenty of people who are prepared to work hard in this world.

Pet Peeves:

Younger people (and some older ones too!) have no idea how to say please or thank you... I'm getting them trained in our area

I just keep saying "Pardon?" when they place an order until they get the hint (or a friend says...say thank you!)...or... I hold onto their parcel until they say thank you!!!

Amazing the results I've had.

Anne

Halimah, I agree with several of your 'peeves' but with modifications.

1 Your number 2 but extend to people who stand anywhere in a public place and are obnoxious- loud, uncouth and usually drunk

2 Your number. I am really peeved at little children being paraded on 'beauty' contests. I note that Victoria Beckham is now advocating high heels for kids as young as 5 or 6. That should bring on hip and back problems before the girl is out of her teens.

3. Parking!! People who just throw their car anywhere. Across driveways, on the footpath, blocking laneways. Where ARE the parking inspectors when you want them most.

4 Is a combination of your 1 and Tassie Stamps peeve about mail. My peeve is getting mail that looks as though a pack of ravenous wolves have had it for lunch. Crumbled, torn and dirty and that is only the stamps. Happens too often.

5 Political correctness and don't get me started on THAT subject.

Ahhh yes political correctness.

They can't teach kids the song "bah bah black sheep" anymore, because categorizing white sheep and black sheep is of course completely racist, we can't have the sheep getting offended now can we?

So "bah bah multicolored sheep" it is.

Ahh, it's getting worse.
No more "Little red riding hood" - it's to scary and vilifies talking wolves.
No more "The 3 little pigs" - it's racist (somehow) and is bad for childhood development.
No more "no". Most childcare centres do not allow the carers and teachers to use that word as it's too negative for a child's emotions. You must say "we don't do that here" or someother cop out line.

Precoscious Princess of the Dark: "But I want a lolly and I want it now".

Mother of too many meaningless words: "I regret to inform you that I am not able to grant that request at this point in time due to your continued rudeness in asking and inability to control your emotions at a satisfactory level".

Precoscious Princess of the Dark: "Then I'll just have a hissy fit in the middle of the shopping aisle and hold my breath and turn blue until you give in as my screams are louder than the fire alarms so you'll be to embarrased to resist. If that doesn't work then I'll just yell out "no don't hit me again daddy, I'll be good.""

Another pet peeve? Anything ending with x-person tacked on the end.
If someone tells me again that they will be my "waitperson" for the evening, I'll show him what I had for lunch.

I'm turning into a curmudgeon. :D

If I am in the shopping aisle for 5 items or less and the woman (it is always women) in front has a trolley I ignore her and just comment to the cashier that it is my opinion that women should not be allowed to vote or drive a car until the can count up to five.
Some try to explain that they can count to five, but are in a hurry.......    duh

People getting on buses, in queues or the only other one in the shop, who ask for something, then start fumbling in their bag for a purse (5 minutes), then opening the purse (one minute) and slowly counting out the exact amount in the smallest change possible (three minutes).

Similarly, people in supermarkets who buy one item, use a debit card, can't eventually remember their PIN after 5 tries, and then eventually decide that they also need a cashout.

Not being able to sit at the tables outside my favourite cafe on a beautiful sunny morning for Sunday brunch because of one or two smokers sitting there polluting the air with their foul cancerous fumes...aarrghhh.

British Tourists Detained, Deported For Tweeting 'Destroy America' (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post Allie Compton First Posted: 01/30/2012
Careful what you tweet.

Two 20-somethings arriving from the U.K. learned a harsh lesson about the American government's sense of humor on Monday, Jan. 23, when they were detained and then forced to return home due to comments they made on Twitter.

Paperwork for the incident indicates that Bryan's name was on a "One Day Lookout" list maintained by Homeland Security.

From the official paperwork:

The tweets had been sent a week before their trip, indicating the U.S. government had flagged the pair well before their arrival.

This isn't the first time a tweet has gotten someone in trouble with the U.S. government.

And other social media outlets, such as Facebook, have also been used by police to prevent potential crimes. Just last week, an Arizona policeman drew a Secret Service probe for posting a photo of a man holding a T-shirt with the image of President Obama riddled with bullet holes.

This news comes at a time when Internet privacy and censorship are hot issues.

Just as well I have no plans to return to the USA

I don't like eating "out". I prefer to eat at home with a nice home cooked meal (We're having home made Lasagne tonight!)...no people around...no music blaring...no children screaming...no traffic fumes and NO inflated prices! (But then again we live in the country so prices aren't as bad as in the city or the HOT tourist spots!

You know SMSSLT? I'm a smoker, but I, myself, hate people smoking around me when I eat! That's why "smokers" were relegated to the 'outdoors' so people eating inside could eat in peace without the horrible smell of smoke around them! But, then they discovered that the 'smokers' were enjoying a lovely sunny morning/afternoon (in the car and truck fumes) and wanted that too!

Now you have the nerve to complain?

Shall we make the outside area a non-smoking area and inside a smoking area? Weather permitting of course!!!!

Get a life...eat at home with your family and enjoy homecooked meals at a quarter of the price of "smoke infested" street cafes!

I have just endured another on of mine.
Queued up at the Supermarket, line of people ahead of me waiting their turn, when in walks someone, up to the cigarette counter, and the check out persons ceases doing the groceries and runs over to immediately serve the cigarette customer.
No point taking it out on the check out person, they are OBVIOUSLY instructed to do this.
But why not make the smoker join the end of the queue :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: like the rest of humanity does.

1) motorbikes who ride up between rows of cars stopped at traffic lights. If i am a motorcyclist, can I automatically jump to the front of the queue at the bank or supermarket too? One of these clowns took my mirror off once. That cost me $170 to replace.

2) Toys marketed to children as collectible. The current fad is 'trashpack' they come with a list showing which ones are common, rare, ultra-rare etc. They will all be forgotten in 6 months, but for now my kids must spend all their pocket money trying to get these things which are all produced by the million in a factory in China.

3) all sorts of political correctness - don't get me started.

No, I have a much better idea, ban smokers from both inside AND outside my favourite cafe. Oh, and while we're at it, pet peeve number 2 is my tax money being used to fund the treatment of those that choose to inflict smoking related diseases upon themselves.

You know what SMSSLT? I agree on one of your points!

NO smoking should be allowed at any restaurants or cafes inside or out! If you can't wait to have a smoke until 'after' you've left, you shouldn't be there! Go to Macdonalds and get a drive-by meal.

As far as tax money being spent on people with cancer and whatever, There may be a fine line here! Some people get cancer and have never smoked in their life! My mother-in-law passed away recently. She had been a smoker since her early teens. She was 93 when she passed....and no cancer!

If I, and I hope I don't, get cancer because of my smoking, I would not expect you or anyone else to pay for a "self-inflicted" medical problem that until the last decade was always touted as being the "cool" thing to do!

Peer pressure is a terrible thing! I was a new Australian, aged 18, and not one of my friends was a non-smoker!

It scares me to see so many young people now start up smoking when all that information and knowledge is out there now...not like when I was young!

Maybe part of the school curiculum should be a visit to a cancer ward a couple of times a year when they are about 15-16. Old enough to not be totally freaked out but young enough to understand what actually happens! And make an informed choice! Not that there would be a choice after visiting a place like that!

The government policies today on such things like plain packaging are totally useless! It only creates a new industry in making 'fancy' cigarette cases like they used to have years ago. Besides which, a smoker won't, in the long run, care what the package looks like...as long as there are smokes in there!

Which brings me to another pet-peeve. Smoking at airports! With modern airconditioning, there should be a room available for smokers so they don't have to stand at the doors where everyone has to come in and out!

Okay, enough ranting for one night!

Good luck banning smoking at your favorite cafe. I will be happy to sign a petition to that effect!

Anne

look what I started  :) but I MUST agree with most of the ones you guys have written, especially about big brother, and the war, public smoking is also another one of mine, I grew up where both my parents were chain smokers, they would literally light a cigarette with the butt of one they were putting out, so our house always reeked of cigarette smoke  and to this day the smell makes me cringe, my husband and I avoid places where smoking is allowed when we go out.

My pet peeve is political correctness! I feel that if you need to say something you should just say it. If I have to say something to someone I just say it, but nicelly but not politicaly correct.

My other pet peeve is mimes I hate the group, saw one he would not leave me alone.

Patience is a virtue.

Standing in a queue in the bank when only one cashier is working and the woman at the head of the line is from the penny arcade with the last ten years takings waiting to be counted.

Waiting to get on a pump at a petrol station. The person returns to their car and takes an eternity to drive away.

Vacuum packed food. How do you get the wrapping off without injuring yourself.

1) People that have forgotten the art of conversation and reply anything they don't know with "Google it", or "Wiki it". Whatever happened to debate and supposition?

2)Tourists. I know I live slap bang in the middle of London, but do you have to walk three abreast as a slow moving roadblock infront of me wherever I go, oblivious to everyone around you and ignorant of anyone else trying to get from A to B.

3)Dog mess, if you take your dog to a park and let it foul the grass without cleaning up after it...you shouldn't be allowed to have a dog. I am fed up with those bloody owners who seem to think that if nobody else saw their dog fouling then they can leave it right there.

4) Cotton wool, this stuff is just pure Evil! Can't look at it, touch it, even think about it. Screaming in pain with a lacerated finger? Approach me with cotton woll and watch me really scream. Whoever invented this stuff???

5) Jedward. If you know who those idiots are then you know what I'm talking about!

Agree wholeheartedly!

I have to admit to looking up on what a 'Bogan' was.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qA8gJoT5yl4

I'm sure Kevin 'Bloody' Wilson might have a song out there about 'Bogans' too. We have Chavs and Pikeys here in the U.K...but most of us working people are peeved at our 'travellers' who are the worst members of our society.

Speaking of "pet" peeves, I would add people who allow my lawn to be used by their pets as toilets as they are walking them.

I just remember another pet peeve, people who don't vote but they ***** about things, if you don't vote don't *****. Voting is the only way to change things, there is nothing that politicians fear is being voted out of office.

1. When only one door of a double door is operational.
2. Emails that want me to send it on to any number of people, specially if they want me to send it back to them.

1. People who get insulted (and say so) if I open the door for them to walk through.

I opened the door at the postoffice a while ago for a "lady" and got both barrels for my efforts. "Do I look like a cripple?" was the terse comment.

(Wish the door had better springs on it as I could have fulfilled her desire to become one).

2. Drivers who come past you in the overtaking lane on the highway only to cut you off in their haste to get back into the lane your in, even with nothing in front of them for miles. Happen's every day on my drive to work and its very annoying (and dangerous) when your doing 110km.

(To all those drivers, please go find a cliff).

3. One word dissmisive replies to complicated and detailed questions.
Long winded replies to simple yes/no questions.

(Que any politician you care to name).

I really am becoming a curmudgeon. :D

1. Female staff working at philatelic centres who have long fingernails and when they separate the stamps you have asked for, leave a massive nail dent in the stamp or stamps where they have pressed down.

2.These people walking along the footpath coming towards you and either texting or talking on their mobile phones and not looking where they are walking and they expect YOU to move out of their way.

3. Sales Assistant staff who look at you as though there is something wrong with you when you ask them to order a particular item in, if they are out of stock even though they stock that item. No wonder retail is going broke!

4. Politicians - that's for another day.

2. Prisoners getting better treatment then elderly people in homes.
3. Jumping into a so called bargain buy and end up getting a Lemon (many times)
4. The rubbish that is on television these days, Bring back the Goodies & Monkey :D
5. My complaining

Does any1 buy all the rubbish that Aust Post is issuing lately?
I often wonder if there is any use for these high value commemoratives that they issue for the AAT?

You and other smokers will get a real shock if you come to Western Australia. Smoking is not allowed in any playground, on the beach, in a car where children are inside it, any eating establishment including the footpath, any pub including the main bar, any fair or fete, any workplace, a railway station, any shop.

Being a non smoker I am rapt since one smoker in a restaurant, for instance, can upset the entire clientele of a restaurant.

Shall we make the outside area a non-smoking area and inside a smoking area? Weather permitting of course!!!!

Get a life...eat at home with your family and enjoy homecooked meals at a quarter of the price of "smoke infested" street cafes!

And now my peeves:

1 People who insist that climate change is real
2 Smokers
3 Political correctness
4 Fear of offending minorities in MY country. We already see schools not celebrating Christmas, Easter, Anzac Day. Now some schools are banning students who bring Australian Flags to school.
5 People who have lists of peeves.

My one:

People who reference "catalog value" to a stamp that shows no relationship to the conditions guide for that catalog.
And, in many cases, are so badly mutilated, should be put in the trash for the sake of young collectors and our hobby.
