There is yet another 5/- Harbour Bridge ANPEX facsimile on sale on eBay, without a disclaimer, and starting at AUD 20. The seller tlccustoms81 appears to be innocent of stamps and does not know what he is selling.

Maybe he thinks the souvenir facsimilies torn out of their mini sheets are rarer than the originals? :D

AND is reduced in size compared to the original,
but two "rare" reduced 'roos may also be about to come onto the market.

I've said it before and I'll say it again until the cows come home:

This facsimile or in fact any facsimile of an original stamp should never have been printed - full stop :!:

If there was the need to get some extra money in government coffers then these should at least be marked properly and not just with a CTO type cancel.

The facsimile was not a Government production. It was printed to raise money for the ANPEX exhibition, presumably by the exhibition organizers.

I am not aware of any facsimile ever being issued by the Post Office, not in the original colours anyway. I doubt the authorities can stop reproductions of obsolete stamps from being produced.

I agree, however, that any such facsimile should be in a colour other than the genuine article. That would put paid to such problems.

Even the London 2010 £1 PUC reproduction is a danger to new collectors due to the similarity to the original.

There was also a colour change reproduction which is a safer item to float around the stamp world.

I realise that this is a bit off topic, and if an interesting discussion develops, I will use my Green Lantern Power Ring and break it off into it's own thread.

Peter, how would you describe these? Let's say pre-decimals take off at some point, and the 2/3d once again reach AUD 25 - 30 (yes, I know how unlikely this is), we have here a reproduction by Australia Post which matches the original (I don't know about the perfs though)

Note: I don't own these - image taken from eBay

Wouldn't the Post Office hold the copyright?

Copyright allows the "owner", for a fee, to licence out the right to make reproductions, as Australia Post (then the Postmaster General's Department) did in 1956 for the images of the Melbourne Olympic stamps.

Australia Post holds copyright on Australian stamps for fifty years after issue.

With the ANPEX Minature sheets being issued in 1972, both the Bridge and 'Roo replicas would have still been copyright.

Here is the 1956 Melbourne Olympics facsimile Miniature Sheet, or replicas if you prefer, printed and sold by a Private Company, with the PMG's approval, in, I believe, 1957. (Sorry about the scan, it was the only one I could find.

I could have claimed this as my own, but with respect for Simon, I won't.

Quote:
The 1972 Exhibition M/S were done in three versions - with the writing in the margins in 3 colours - black, red or blue, with 10,000 of each, numbered from 00001 to 10000 - so a total print run of 30,000.

Simon Dunkerley

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=9035&p=384719&hilit=ANPEX#p384719

So, 30,000 in all, which theoretically makes them twice as rare as the real thing, which had 72,000ish.

At the rate these are being torn to shreds and offered on eBay as "real" singles, the complete sheetlets will finish up being very rare indeed.

And still worthless.

Australia Post presumably okayed the reproduction for ANPEX as they do for almost any stamp/philatelic show. They can and do sometimes charge a licensing fee.

Paul, images in a book don't count as facsimiles in the strict sense of the word. :D

Peter,

They are issued on gummed paper, both imperf and perfed.

There is a very small microprinted year of issue at lower left on the 1d roo.

They are another short lived Australia Post issue/series of products.

The book contained other perf and imperf issues.

If you mean the 5/ Bridge, then the easiest way to tell is probably that they all have the same double cancels in the same lower corners.

But in the flesh, the paper is different, as is the perfs, the size, the printing and probably the colour.
