Sorry if anybody here lives in, was born in or likes to visit Chertsey. The only knowledge I had of it was this postmark. :(

So I looked things up. Chertsey is a town in Surrey on the River Thames. It is 29 km south west of central London. It is home to the Thorpe Park theme park - which I had heard of previously :)

Mock up of a Chichester 190 duplex cancellation

This is on a card printed to order for the Postal History Society 26th Annual Conference held at the Dolphin and Anchor Hotel, Chichester, Sussex from 1 to 5 October 1970.

From what gets said on Stampboards, I thought such creations as philatelic printed to order cards with philatelic cancellations were anathema to postal history collectors. :?:

The left hand third of the bottom line seems to be missing.

This is on a card printed to order for the General Accident Fire & Life Assurance Cpn. Ltd. It was purchased from a machine at Heathrow Airport for 5 Shillings as it is the receipt for a baggage insurance policy taken out by a relative of mine when she flew to Australia. She sent the card to her father for safe keeping.

It is not listed by Huggins. :!:

London SW
21 May 1984

This is on a House of Commons envelope which has not been posted from the House of Commons post office.

These are both on pre-decimal envelopes printed to order for the Manchester Education Committee. They have been used 3 months after decimalization with decimal adhesives to make up the new rates (the first one is Second Class, the second one is First Class). The envelopes were pre-addressed for return to Manchester, so to use up the old stock they have had labels stuck over the address so that they can be used 'outwards'.

More Leeds postmarks - these are all on envelopes printed to order for the HSBC Bank. The envelopes were used for non-standard communications from the Leeds City Branch.

This is on a large, vertically laid out envelope for unfolded A4 documents with the 'stamp' out of range of a cancelling machine.

Foreign Service postmarks

FS
Unframed handstamp

On an envelope used to Gara Munteni in Romania. With a 'corner card' for a shipping company, C.H.Rugg & Co of Bishopsgate Within, London - but no other postal markings than the "FS".

F.S. IL
Single circle handstamp
September 1913

On an envelope sent to Copenhagen with a receipt mark of 1 October 1913, therefore (presumably) posted in late September 1913.

F.S. M
Single circle handstamp

Image Image Image Image
On W.H.Smith & Son 186 Strand London W.C wrappers sent to le Havre. The KEVII definitive stamp is perfin "WHS" for W.H.Smith the stationers, newsagents and booksellers.

F.S.
After May 1951
In a triangle with 7 wavy lines. Machine cancellation

Image
On an envelope sent to Hallstahammar in Sweden. After May 1951 as the three halfpence envelope 'stamp' was coloured brown before that date.
I have another one with an identical postmark used to Hertford Connecticut USA - neither envelope has any other postal markings to firm up the date.

Other bulk posting and similar postmarks

387
In a triangle with 6 wavy lines. Machine cancellation

Image
On a window envelope printed to order for Groves & Lindley, Cloth Merchants and Export Tailors of Huddersfield, then in the West Riding, now in West Yorkshire.

Used after 30 June 1927 as the indicium is Die 182 which was registered on that date. KGV examples in my collection with identifiable dies and dated postmarks give a period of 2 to 20 years after the registration date for commercial usage. The firms that ordered the envelope presumably ordered large quantities which took a long time to use up.

- C- MTP
In a triangle, with 7 wavy lines. Machine cancellation

Image
On an envelope used to Årjäng in Sweden. There are no other postal markings. No idea what "MTP" stands for - a bit early for Mail Transfer Protocol :?

EC
In a triangle with 5 wavy lines. Machine cancellation

Image
On an envelope used to Aarhus in Denmark. EC is presumably East Central (London). The indicium is Die 15, which is about 1913 (don't have the exact refrence to hand) but it could well be used after WWI.

J NPB
Barred circle handstamp

Image
Used on a wrapper from the London City Mission at 3 Bridewell Place, (London) EC to Harlesden in northwest London. Journals and News Paper Branch :?: :?: :?:

Some double circle handstamps

Ebbw Vale Mon

Ebbw Vale was in Monmouthshire, but is now in Gwent. It has a population of 33,000. It once had the largest steelworks in Europe and many coal mines - all now closed.

Places in London that don't mention London in the postmark.

Kilburn S.O.N.W.
26 April 1911. Continuous runner with 6 straight lines

Image
On an envelope printed to order for Thomas Parsons & Sons of 8 Endell Street, London WC but evidently posted in Kilburn in northwest London. An extra halfpenny stamp has been added as it must have been used for a letter rather than for printed papers.

King William St. B.O. 1
5 May 1903. Single circle handstamp

Image
We know it's in London - it was in the City of London - because the envelope was used registered to Larnaca in Cyprus with a "R" registration cachet and a "Registered M London 5 MY 03" postmark:

Image Image

Leytonstone E.1
20 May 1925. Continuous runner with 5 wavy lines

Image
Used from Leytonstone in northeast London to Harlesden in northwest London.

London postmarks contd

9 June 1911. Continuous runner with 6 straight lines

Image

London E.C. A
19 February 1979. "National Postal Museum Opened by HM the Queen 19 February 1969"

Image
On the 9p envelope issued on 12 February 1979 to commemorate the NPM's 10th anniversary. This is cancelled on the actual anniversary date.

London N.W.
29 December ?. Continuous runner with 5 wavy lines
The year looks like "9" but can't be as King Edward VII was still alive. It is probably a "19" with a very faint "1". The dash afterwards does make it also look like a "91" but it isn't.

Image
It is on an envelope printed to order for the London & North Western Railway Co. and sent to the Taff Vale Railway Co. in Cardiff.

Both postmarks are on window envelopes printed to order for an unnamed company of 55/56 Pall Mall, London S.W.1.

The upper envelope is a fairly late use of the George VI 3d printed to order indicium. The lower envelope is a mixed franking KGVI and QEII envelope.

A couple of other items from London SW.

London S.W.
3 April 1985. "Write it better in a letter"

Image
On a House of Commons envelope.

SW
11 June 1902. Single circle handstamp

Image
On an envelope printed to order for an unnamed company at 105 Victoria Street, London SW and sent to Ascot. The Ascot receiving mark on the back confirms the unclear "02" in this postmark. 105 Victoria Street is in 2012 the headquarters of the London Strategic Health Authority and also the address of an Army & Navy Store.

Used on a 2½d printed to order envelope. No indication of who ordered it, however. It's very large 201 X 140 mm and printed on very thick manila paper which is folded to be double thickness on the back - the Victorian equivalent of a cardboard-backed envelope. Used from London W2 to Eastbourne.

17-19 Bedford Street was used as a public post office from 1884 to 1963, originally being the West Central District Post & Telegraph Office. It is in 2012 the Post Office Supplies Department Headquarters. Information from http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=46128

Southall, Middx. Gt. Britain
9 September 1960. "Express Good Wishes by Greetings Telegrams"

On a window envelope printed to order for Sandersons Wallpapers of London W1. Southall is now part of the London Borough of Ealing.

Woolwich Great Britain -L-

On a window envelope printed to order for the Metropolitan Water Board of Rosebery Avenue E.C.1. The indicium is Die 42 - registered as long previously as 25 August 1914.

Woolwich S.E.18
17 June 1938. Machine postmark with 7 unbroken wavy lines

Image
On another window envelope printed to order for the Metropolitan Water Board of Rosebery Avenue E.C.1. The indicium on this later one is Die 74, registered on 14 November 1923 - only 15 years previously :!:

The last lot of stuff from what I have on printed to order postal stationery from Great Britain.

Southend-on-Sea Essex
15 September 1955. "Civil Defence Join Now"

Image
On an envelope printed to order for the North Thames Gas Board, sent locally to Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.

Sutton Coldfield Wks.
12 October 1960. 7 wavy lines

Image
On a window envelope printed to order for the Esso Petroleum Company of Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. "Wks" is for Warwickshire. Sutton Coldfield is now a part of Birmingham in the West Midlands.

York
19 December 1960. "Post Early for Christmas"

Image
On an envelope printed to order for an unknown company, used to a vicar in Loftus-in-Cleveland in North Yorkshire.

Perth
5 October 1968. "24th Conference of the Postal History Society. Perth"
Philatelic special cancellation.

Image
On a postal card printed to order for the 24th Annual Conference of the Postal History Society, held from 3 to 7 October 1968 at the Station Hotel in "Perth, Scotland". As opposed to Perth WA presumably. The haloed lamb with a banner is from the coat of arms of the City of Perth.

Somebody at the conference has broken all the rules of PH collecting by addressing a philatelic item to himself at the Station hotel during the conference itself....

After showing postmarks from the stuff I retrieved from my loft, I next showed the postmarks from my collection of British stamped to order postal stationery.

A week ago my sister-in-law cleared her loft. She was never a philatelist, but she did have an album of picture postcards. :o

They are mostly unused, so were brought back from wherever as souvenirs. There are quite a few that were sent to her, to relatives or to friends that have been included as well. There is also a small number of older cards from the late 1940s onwards which are from somebody else and have ended up being included in the same album.

I have therefore borrowed the album and will show the postmarks of those which were used - I have checked the postmark database and they seem not to be in it already.

I'll start with a more unusual item.

Llangollen Denbighshire
22 May 1951. 7 wavy lines

Image

But this is on a 200 mm long card with only 2½d worth of stamps on it:

Image
Image

Oversize cards had to paid for at the letter rate of 3d. There is therefore also a black 1d postage due cachet on the card, datable to May 1951:

"1D TO PAY - 72 -"

Image

Another post card which you had to pay for when it arrived. :x

Croydon Surrey
21 May 1959. "Cheap rate trunk calls 6 PM - 6 AM & Sunday afternoons"

Image

This is on a card with a view of St Pauls and Ludgate Hill in central London rather than Croydon. The vehicles in the picture seem to be of an older vintage than 1959. But the post card rate had been 2½d since 1957 and there is only a 2d stamp on the card.

Image
Image

A 1d postage due cachet for double the deficiency has therefore been added to the card. This one is in green - the last one shown from Llangollen had been in black. The card of course dates this use to May 1959 - the green ink is also on the picture side but in a different position so has offset from another miscreant's card in the postage due pile:

"1D TO PAY 93P"

Image

And there was a third card sent to let you know how nice the holiday was, but you had to pay to get the card in your hands.

Aberdeen
3 August 1960. Double circle handstamp

Image

This is on another even longer card at 230 X 89 mm. A 2½d stamp pays the post card rate, but the outsize card needed a letter rate 3d stamp.

Image
Image

A 1d postage due cachet has therefore ben added. Like the Croydon 1d cachet in the last posting, it is green. But it is now boxed and gives an explanation of why you as the recipient have to pay 1d to actually receive it:

"1D MORE TO PAY LETTER RATE ABOVE....07" There are the initials "S.I." in a small box at the bottom left. Is the "07" the maximum length in inches - this card is 230 mm = 9 inches long? :?:

Image
The "ADDRESS" in the cachet is printed on the card, NOT part of the cachet. My display distinguishes the colours so that it is obvious, but in artificial light they look practically the same.

That's the end of postcards with postage due cachets added. I will post the rest in batches in alphabetical order of the place where they were postmarked. One of the senders had a caravan and seemed to post cards a long, long way from where they had been bought.

They are mostly machine cancellations with 7 wavy lines. The next largest group are handstamped double circle postmarks. The next group are machine cancellations with slogans. And there are three with 5 wavy lines.

Aberfoyle Stirling

It must have been renovated - or knocked down and rebuilt - or moved as the John O'Groats website shows a different building at http://www.visitjohnogroats.com/jog_po.htm.

The website also tells us "Here is the only place you can get the world famous postmark either hand franked or done by our Krag machine (a rare hand operated franking machine) sought after by stamp enthusiasts!"

Some postmarks from my collection of British postal stationery.

The postmarks have always been of interest, but definitely a secondary interest, while I was acquiring items for the collection. I was quite surprised by the high number of non-philatelic postmarks - hardly any philatelic ones before QEII and a good majority of items used by private individuals or "non-philatelic" companies after 1952.

I will put them up in batches alphabetically as that is they way I stored the scans.

Aberdeen
1 December 1925. "Post Early for Christmas"

Image
Yes, it's the 1925 British Empire Exhibition envelope with a non-philatelic postmark :!:

Abergele Denbighsire

Image
Abergele is now in the county of Clwyd.

Aberystwyth Cards
1 September 1936. 7 continuous wavy lines

Image
Aberystwyth was in Cardiganshire and is now in Ceredigion

Albert Square Manchester 2
6 February 1975. Single circle handstamp with "7" above date

Image
Albert Square in Manchester (NOT the Albert Square in the Eastenders TV soap) is the location of Manchester Town Hall.

Applecross Kyle Ross-Shire B
2 August 1975. Double circle handstamp

Image
Ross-shire is no more, so Applecross is in the Highland region. Wikipedia explains that Applecross is in fact the name of a collection of settlements on the Applecross peninsula - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applecross.

This is from a 3½p postal card issued in 1974. It was used in August 1975, by which time the first class rate had doubled to 7p. The Scottish 3½p stamp next to it is therefore just making up the new rate and is not philatelic.
