This all started at the weekend when Darren Cheeseman publicly said that Julia Gillard should go and Kevin Rudd be the New Prime Minister. Now last night Rudd resigned as Foreign Minister and is expected to challenge Gillard as early as next week. While the whole thing appears orchestrated, this should not be the time and place. Labor would go further backwards than it already has.

The thing about this is also that the Independants who are propping up the Government have consistantly stated that their deal is with Gillard and not the Australian Labor Party, so where does this leave the Government if the coup succeeds?

There could easily be a motion of no confidence passed by the Libs. and the Indies, and it will be back to another early election. Where Labor would get destroyed. Interesting times...

Interesting times indeed :!:

I listened to Rudd's talk to the media this morning. Amid all the other stuff he did say that he would make a decision on Monday.

Now that means (well I think it does) that he's been phoning up everyone to see which side they are on and if they are borderline I'll bet he'll give them a carrot to get them onside

If he doesn't have the numbers, then it's pointless him even entering the contest. Better to not contest it and gracefully step aside until Gillard loses it in the next Federal election then pounce.

Somehow though I can't see him sitting as a back-bencher until the next election, so perhaps he might even leave Federal politics altogether.

We'll know on Monday morning.

If I was Rudd I would not contest next Monday's spill unless I had the numbers. He can just sit on the backbench and wait. The polls are so bad, with Gillard is so untrusted in the electorate, that a majority of his colleagues will eventually be desperate enough to elect him. Imagine Gillard sitting there, feeling Rudd's eyes boring into her from the back benches for weeks or months, knowing that the axe was going to fall but just not knowing when.

I think that, with Rudd in control, the Labor Caucus meetings will require 2 phone boxes after the next election. With Gillard, they will only need one.

I am not sure, however, that Rudd hasn't painted himself into a situation where he has to contest next Monday (or lose all credibility). If he loses badly he just might decide that he has had enough of politics and quit. The Government cannot afford to lose a single seat and would almost certainly lose Rudd's in a by-election in such circumstances. It all depends on how much he still bears a grudge over what the hypocrites (demanding loyalty, when they showed none!) did to him in 2010.

I just wish there was a Federal election now, even Abbott cannot be worse than this lot!

There is now a rumour circulating from Canberra (which, I hasten to add, I don't believe) that Rudd will quit the Labor Party if he loses Monday's ballot and sit as an independent. Also that at least 2 others will follow him.

I confidently predict that Julia will not only survive next Monday, she will thrive thereafter. Rudd has made a complete botch of his strategy, if he had one, and his tactics. Farewell, Kevin 07.

What is really interesting to me is, as Darrin remarked, just how self-absorbed, self-seeking and self-interested these politicians are. But even for an innocent abroad like me, that doesn't exactly come as a shock.

Gillard thrive?? Where have you been the last 18 months Clive? Under a rock? It won't matter who leads the Labor Party, they are terminal. Assuming they make it to the next election date (late next year) it will be a slow train wreck.

That's what they said about Howard in 2004, and Keating in the 'unwinnable' election of 1993.

Anyway, time will tell. 8)

Kevin may even be so bold as to tell those wavering in their support for him that if he doesn't win then he'll leave politics.

That would indeed lead to a by-election which most likely would be lost requiring an election to be held.

So they have two choices, back Kevin or have a snap election where many of them would lose their seats and which would consign Labor to the boondocks for a decade.

Pretty simple decision if I was an undecided Labor politician

This is what Kevin should have done when he was kicked out the PM spot, or Julia should have handed him his pink slip. I don't know HOW those two managed to work with each other after that overthrow incident, and the 'Bad Blood' that resulted from it.

They haven't. :)

Since Gillard air-brushed him from history in her space last week, her fate was sealed.

This guy beat John Howard .. in fact Howard lost his "unloseable" blue ribbon super safe seat held for decades.

She may like to forget that but many voters have not.

Having said that Labour are doomed due to all this. He will be HATED by near 50% of the party MPs if he wins any vote, and that is untenable.

Abbott and the Libs must be splitting their sides laughing watching all this Kamikaze throat slitting from both sides.

Malcolm Turnbull is sharpening his knives as we speak.

And Anna Bligh is hunting for both of them with her 12 gauge I'd guess. Talk about terrible timing.

I'm not so sure about this bit. IF he becomes PM, and IF he can lift Labor primary votes by, even say 3% or more, in the Polls, and before the next election, then a lot of MP's in marginal seats will fall in love with him all over again. And there are a lot of marginals around at the moment.

Lets face it, Cheeseman is gone in Corangamite, the closest marginal in the Country at this point, which will cost Labor the House after the next electon, and Sarah Henderson (Liberal) is already pencilled in as the new member. Which is why I suspect that he was asked to "fall on his sword". He knows his career is dead in the water. I think that he is a useless jerk, even though I won't say it out loud.

I really think that Rudd as leader can pick up enough votes and save enough MP's careers that, as Peter said, Labor Caucus will be able to meet in two phonebooths rather than one.

And with Gillard as PM, can anyone say 1966 under Calwell?

Well SACK the LOT of THEM and let`s start AGAIN .

Seriously the last result was a clear indication what the Australian Voters thought , Nobody I think trusts any politician any more but we are locked into this ridiculous Political system.

It`s Farcical we are now being Governed by the Greens by back door deals .

A vote of NO CONFIDENCE in ALL our politicians and Political system is whats needed to get us back to a system that listens to and acts for the people who put them there.

And yes I think the Australian government, not WILL but HAS self destructed

Just my opinion

Rudd Press Conference is now happening. He will be challenging Julia Gillard on Monday, so he must think that he has the numbers. Somehow, I doubt it.

He has called for a secret Ballot at the spill meeting, rather than "hands up", and he has promised more power to backbenchers. That makes me certain that he has not yet got the numbers.

Interestingly he said if defeated in Monday Ballot he'd retire from Cabinet, to the back bench and would NOT challenge Gillard again.

So he must have the numbers (in his mind!) I'd guess! Or will resign soon after and trigger a by-elelction and the government will fall pretty much.

He doesn't need the numbers this time. He just needs enough to form a base, somewhere between 30 and 40. Gillard will then be swinging in the breeze, whilst Rudd watches and prepares for his next challenge. The problem can only go away if Rudd is humiliated and/or quits parliament.

If Labor wasn't so on the nose already you would say that this was the killer blow to their hopes of a victory at the next election.

Their only plus is that they will probably remain in power (absent someone leaving parliament or being convicted of a criminal offence) till the next election is due late next year. That is because the independents know they will, mostly, not survive that election and so will want to delay it as long as possible.

He has already resigned from Cabinet (effective Monday morning he is already a backbencher) and they all say they will not challenge again. Then their colleagues always seem to manage to convince them it is for the good of the party and the country that they do have another go. I don't trust anything either of them say, myself.

Although his youtube clip is about Julia and the Carbon Tax it is quite relevant to the the current events.

Well said Swanny.

I'm sure most Australians are fed up with this "I'm more popular than you" charade by these two so called political leaders.

The Libs/Nats must all be rolling around on the floor laughing at all this.

In this morning's Telegraph, one journo said that the Libs/Nats have enough ammo from all this in-fighting for a different TV advert every day of the next election campaign, with some to spare.

What are these Labor poli's thinking :?:

It won't matter 1 iota who is in government in future as this once great country we had as in my opinion, finished just like the once almight United Kingdom.

We have no border protection, illlegals coming and receiving all the benefits under the sun, whilst our very own have to jump through hoops to even get a lousy electricity voucher from these welfare agencies etc.

Both sides of politics handing out $$$$ to third world countries who hate Australia's guts and these politicians continue to do it whilst our very own suffer, I can't work it out?

Yes, authorise the Navy to open fire on the refugees and sink the mongrels.

I'm biting my tongue very hard here.

There's a whole, very long, locked thread on this topic here: http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=23519

Locked because people on here were very passionate about this one way or the other, and some lost their composure.

I strongly recommend keeping this thread on topic.

I agree with Muruk, let's not go down that road again!

As has been said, there are enough sound bites, from both camps, for the opposition to have a field day at the next election.

It looks like Rudd won't have the votes on Monday. So be ready for internecine warfare for months to come.

In general, neurotypicals' brain wiring makes evasive utterances a hard wired feature. They can't help it. Must be some sort of evolutionary survival mechanism involved here.

In addition, politicians have it on their position description. They must choose between being a liar or a hypocrite. They are much better and more practised at it than the average person.

In any case, my father was right. Things have to be totally stuffed up before anyone will do anything serious to fix it.

It is all very bleak.

Whatever the result we will lose some good genuine politicians

… Yes there is some good mixed in with the inept on both sides

… and then if Abbott wins things will not be rosy at all.

The sad thing about all of this, is, that the country is suffering as well as the people and business's, the only way to let politicians klnow that they do not have respect from the people is NOT to vote for any of them at election time.

Council elections will be coming up soon and watch the Councillors come out of the woodwork seeking votes promising this and that for the particular suburbs they supposedly represent, any other time they don't want to know about you or any Council problem you may have.

The donkey vote percentage over the past 30-odd years has run at an average of 10-13% on each Federal Election; except those years when a lot of people had a gut-full of our esteemed pollies' antics (I can think of a couple of instances  ) and it has, on occasion, blown out to over 20%.

What most people don't seem to realize is that, by a) writing nothing but nasty notes on the ballot papers, b) leaving them empty, or c) screwing them up and chucking them in the bin on your way out the door, all you are doing is (by default) casting your vote for the ruling junta.

While I believe that the old maxim - "the person who should be in Parliament, won't stand" is true (okay, I've mangled the quote), at least in this country we still have the right, and the responsibility, to put our hand up for the person we think will best look after our interests.

The fact that too many punters vote on party lines and therefore vote for who they think might be the most popular president (sorry, prime piece of steak), is misguided. Yes, we do have a two-party preferred system, but that should not stop any of us from using our hard-won rights, and at least trying to do a Don Chipp.

Sorry. Did I use the word 'junta'???

As Australians we only have 2 teams, one V's the other, and both FAIL at being a government.

Gilly + Ruddy are best friends, their team planned this whole cherade years ago, to take focus off the Libs.

I'm a born and bred blue collar working labor voter, I cant wait for tommorow, see Ruddy back in the close to topish seat, all the bad descisions will be blamed on Gilly, and again the full party will retain the BIG wages for a few more years.

Oh, how clever these idiots are
they fool us for now....

Muruk, why do you say that? Despite the politicians, we have done pretty well so far. We have our fair share of cretins, I admit, but the majority of the population are not of the cretin class. :D

A friend emailed me the following:

"HELP !!

Does anyone know how to cancel a bid on E-Bay?

I put in a $72.50 bid for a "Mickey Mouse Outfit", and now, it seems I'm only nineteen minutes away from owning Gillard's entire Cabinet."

I can see his dilemna, that bid is about $200,000,000,072.50 more than the item is worth! Perhaps he should pray that some of the bunnies of 2007 are still around and know a 'bargain' when they see one?

Today is D Day. Kevin12 has promised he won't challenge again if he loses today. Honest Injun! There is simply no way he will challenge Gillard again, if he loses today!

No, next time he will arrange to be drafted in as the saviour. And the politicians wonder why we hold them in such contempt?

Peter,

It occurred to me that Rudd could declare, if he loses, as he will, that there would be as much chance of him challenging again as of him playing full forward for the Lions (or some other position and club).

That was what Gillard said shortly before betraying Rudd, although I think the analogy was with Footscray.

I'm mildly surprised Rudd hasn't used it during this brief but vicious campaign.

It's truly unbelievable that the Labor Party has fought such a vicious civil war in so public a fashion. Perhaps it is a manifestation of the desperation of their position, but they have provided so much ammunition to their political enemies (in the course of a couple of weeks) that it will be multiple elections before it can all be used.

If your government is like ours in the US they will blow up, but I am hoping your government is smarter than ours. Our government couldn't fight its way out of a wet paper bag both sides would fight each other to be the first out.

I think it will be the status quo. Rudd chose the wrong place and the wrong time......what will happen next!

Perhaps we need something akin to the Darwin Awards for Politicians, for shooting themselves in the foot.

The Harold Holts?

Gillard 73, Rudd 29. The status quo prevails.

Yes, but

Julia Gillard to win caucus vote, but Kevin Rudd has not ruled out being drafted as leader later
