Is this a "501" Numeral ? Where would that be from ? Looks like a poor stamp with plenty of flaws on it not least the LA joined.

I like that town name Yandilla, tried to find it and all I came up with was an Outback Station or something south west of Toowoomba, nice number to have manfaefife. :D

I have a couple more arriving in the mail in a week or so, can't wait to show them one looks a bit tricky could be a 4R again.

cheers

Hi all,

I am trying to sort out a number of my numeral postmarks from Australia so I can add a note next to them in my album showing where they were used.

Hopefully I have got these right from the resource thread but grateful for any confirmation, these are the "ray" postmarks I have.

131= Gladstone, 116=Carpentaria Downs or Macalister
168= Tewantin, 528= Townsville
592 Benowa or Longreach, 568= Charters Towers
96= Maryborough, Gympie or Dalby, 33= Mackay 2 types
95= Eton, 80= Mitchell Downs, 570= Townsville
124= Ravenswood, 167= Yungarie or Byrnes town, 148= Bundaberg - 2 types
84= Springsure, 214 Toowoomba, 87= Ipswich or Eagle Junction

I know it is not numeral but I also wondered if anybody could tell me what the O.B.C refers to on the 1/- issue??

Thank you very much, happy to scan close up if it is not clear enough and apologies for the number of stamps I want to Identify

Lundy :D

Hi, just recieved this one today a 477 type 2B four side bars I think thats right  , not sure who owns the cancel though seems to be a few users for this looking at the PPA website, 3 of them are rated 4R and one rated R this one looks to be a winner either way, although it is not too clear :(
Image

Oh and I also have a Jackson CD (not Michael  ), on KGV 1d red, looks to be a 4R also or is that for a Qld BN?

Cheers

No, still Nanango. Jimna was only for the period 1868-1879 and your stamp is later than that

Hi all, I have one I discovered with my Kangaroo & Map lot I am about to sell I never took much notice of the cancel. It looks to be a Qld BN 142 or 144 I have tried to darken and lighten it but failed in my quest for the answer. Looks to have a couple small flaws it might help with the selling, terrible perfs though any ideas on the number?

Thanks jeremy29, it was a bonus for sure, I had to buy 3 stamps to get hold of the 2R, and well a little extra happiness cam with it in a way. 8) .

I don't want to be to difficult but I left a scan of another Queensland stamp on Australian Cancels That Have You Stumped - Sleuths Needed thread. Are you able to have a look when you have time?

Thanks for everything

I hadn't seen that post before. Not much to go on but it looks like a parcel post marking, PPB with 4 lines underneath. PPB stands for Parcel Post Branch. They are common

Yes looks like 140. 23 is hard to see as is the 5-8. 140 is R. Have you tried the cellophane trick. Works especially well with the 1d red. Put some orange / red cellophane over it (available at newsagents or office supplies) and it really helps bring out the number :-)

I have a little pile of States stamps to check through, and did a random check on this 1d from Queensland, I can see its a 214 but it's more the condition of the stamp that stood out. Am I likely to encounter many of these 1d's in such poor plate wear condition ?

yes Donald, many of these issues have worn plates, although your example is more worn than most :D. That is one of the beauties of this issue, the number of plate flaws and varieties and variations.

Having just found this thread, I've gone through a couple of 100 unwanted from a bulk lot. All are as per Jeremy29's avatar. The only one's that I have any confidence about are:- 148, 245, 474, 544, 647 & 989.

Anything there worth producing a scan of?

949 must be wrong as they only go up to the 700s (unless it was used interstate as NSW and Victorian numbers go that high). 647 and 544 are common, 474 is rare, 148 is common and 245 is rare. Can you scan your 949 and we can try and identify it for you.

Thanks Jeremy.

Surprisingly it seems less clear on the enlarged scan- like 9- combination of 4 & 8 - 9. (There's still another stamp stuck on the back, as you can see.)

245 & 474 are the only really clear ones out of the 200. Can you tell me what towns they represent please.

Is there no way you can darken that image mobbor ? I've copied it and darkened it my end here but with a 2nd hand image it doesn't come too clear. Though it does on closer look look like 989 which is impossible so turn it around and it becomes 686 if that makes sense. 686 looks like it could be Clayfield which according to PPA opened c.1909. I've probably got all of that wrong but hey ho I'm a trier :D

Image

Just checked ebay and there was a 686 Clayfield numeral for sale

I have no idea how to darken it, but there is no need. You're a genius.

Of course it's 686! The '8' is now very clear & obviously upside down.

mobbor, I use Microsoft office picture manager and click on Picture then brightness and contrast and simply slide the slider to darken the image, works great on difficult postmarks on KGV heads, give it a go see what you think.

As for genius, well it's a tiny bit of payback, for all the help you've given me on the KGV heads.

245 is Sherwood, a suburb of Brisbane and 474 is Corinda, also in Brisbane. Your strike is 686 (it is upside down), Clayfield 4r and a very nice and desirable item

Thank you Jeremy.

You're obviously putting in a great deal of work here.

This is one of the great things about Stampboards: you stumble onto a new thread, gain new knowledge & maybe a new collecting field.

Yes, it does look like a 486

I have run it through the really useful heat map option in Picasa. The software is free (it is owned by Google). It can be found at http://picasa.google.com.au/

It is a very tricky one, my first instinct was "485" as there seems to be a straight downward line which would be correct for a 5, however the only way of telling would be to compare it with a 485 and a 486. Only having a handful of numeral postmarks, I don't know if the way a 5 or 6 is produced is the same on them all.

Donald, the 485 is a flat 5 (top horizontal stroke), whereas the 486 is a rounded 6, so if I were to choose between the two I would say definitely a 6 :-)

Thanks Jeremy that confirms it then, yet another little bit of knowledge accepted, Just hope it stays in that brain of mine :D Once I get a few thousand more numeral cancels I'll move up to the big boys books.

Hi Jeremy, I have one I feel lost with and I didn't pay much maybe $2 so not a big loss. Is it a 201 or 204 and the bars seem different to what I have seen is it from another state maybe?

Cheers

Hi Michael, it is 201, Rockhampton. This one is very famous, the Roller cancel and rated 4r and very rare on a Chalon, so a great find! It is very enignmatic, no-one knows why Rockhampton had this cancel and no other towns.

Jeremy, could you please take a look at
http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=15930&start=650
and help us out

Missionshk asked about a QLD?/N.S.W.? sunburst cancel 131, and and I totally derailed the thread by getting on the topic of issue dates for the stamp in question

The discussion takes up quite a lot of the page, and I'm as clueless as I was in the beginning

Oh my golly gosh, rated 4R and very rare oh oh jumping for joy here, is the price more then $2 maybe like $50 or something wow, if I could sing I would. Oh my I can't wait to get it.

Thank you Jeremy, you made my day

I also thought I bought a bargain below until I paid $3 and looked at it carefull, sadly it was cut, not imperforate at all. I made up for it though with the Rockhampton cancel yippee. Hang on, it looks to have perforation just above the queen, I better look at it carefully when I get it.
