Banbury Oxfordshire
27 June 1970. Boxed handstamped special cancellation "Battle of Cropredy 1644" with a picture of a roundhead cavalryman.


Cropredy Bridge 6 km north of Banbury was the site of an English Civil War battle fought on 29 June 1644. It was the last battle won on English soil under the command of an English King.

Bournemouth, a town of 163,000 people, does not have the county of Dorset in the postmark.

Bradford, a town of 293,000 people - the 14th largest town in the UK, keeps the "Yorkshire" in its postmark, however. That's because there are other Bradfords in Wiltshire, Somerset, Cornwall, Greater Manchester and Northumberland.

In 1974 Bradford became a City Metropolitan Borough in West Yorkshire instead of a City in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

This postmark is on a stampless aerogramme used to a British soldier on active service in the South Atlantic.

As it was sent to London NW10, it is probably used between 1919 and 1925 when the inland wrapper rate was 1d instead of the previous (and subsequent) ½d. If it was a double weight usage, then it is after 1917 as this is the 1d red wrapper with the sideways instead of earlier three-quarters portait of KGV.

Charing • Cross • WC

Charing Cross is named after the now demolished Eleanor cross that stood there, in what was once the hamlet of Charing. Since the second half of the 18th century Charing Cross has been seen as the centre of London.

Conway Caernarvonshire

Conway Caernarvonshire has the county's mid-term spelling - between Carnarvonshire and Caernarfonshire. The town is now called Conwy and is in Conwy County Borough but was previously in Gwynedd. It has a population of 4,000 and is the site of Conwy Castle.

Craignure is a village on the Isle of Mull in Argyll and Bute. It has a population of 200 and is the main ferry port from the Isle of Mull to Oban on the Scottish mainland. I stocked up on Scottish aerogrammes at the post office there in 1999 as they had quite a large selection of older issues, but this postmark was obtained by somebody else.

This is from a kind relative with whom I had talked about postmarks. Surprisingly her eyes didn't glaze over Instead she produced a receipted payment slip with this postmark on it.

Now there are scans from both of the Garforth Leeds post offices which still exist in 2012. There were a couple from Ninelands Garforth in earlier postings. The East Garforth post office is, however, still not represented.

Hindhead Surrey

Hindhead is in south east Surrey, about as far from London as anywhere in Surrey. Both George Bernard Shaw and Arthur Conan Doyle lived there.


Holy Island Berwick-on-Tweed
20 May 1973. What looks like a single circle handstamp, but is probably a double circle with the inner circle worn away through use. "A" above the date.


Holy Island is Lindisfarne, off the Northumberland coast. In 2001 it had a permanent population of 162 - but thousands of tourists. The road there is a causeway and the island gets cut off by each tide - giving plenty of time to write and post those essential postcards.

Hounslow is now the London Borough of Hounslow in west London.


Hull N. Hside
11 May 1977. "First Day of Issue" single circle handstamp


Hull, officially Kingston upon Hull, was in the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, when it became part of the County of Humberside. Humberside was abolished in 1996 and Hull once more became part of the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Humberside was on both banks of the River Humber, with the south formerly being in Lincolnshire and the north in Yorkshire - hence the "N. Hside" for "North Humberside" in the postmark.

Not the Hyde Park in London, but the Hyde Park in Leeds. It is an area north of the city centre and is now part of 'student-land'. The Post Office is no longer there, however.

20 August 1990. Red continuous roller with 5 wavy lines. The alternate town marks either have or do not have a "+" below the date.


I posted a different John O'Groats postmark previously. This one is presumably the one referred to at http://www.visitjohnogroats.com/jog_po.htm: "Here is the only place you can get the world famous postmark either hand franked or done by our Krag machine (a rare hand operated franking machine) sought after by stamp enthusiasts!"

And in this case used with red ink not in error (red normally uses on items prepaid in cash) but because this is 1990 when the 1d black anniversary (1st class black) stamp was in use and most machine postmarks were changed to red.

It's not a squared circle, it's a Hoster machine used 1882-1893 see p155 of latest CBP. Prices from £15 for complete card.

CPB doesn't mention Leeds and all the references in a quick look on the web suggest that these were only used at London, London EC, London NPB, Charing Cross and Bedford Street (home of wholesaler Vera Trinder, of course).

Here's the complete card. Used to Dulwich, giving address details in Bexhill. So it does look like from those details that it is one of the London offices you mention.

The reason I assumed it was a Leeds postmark is that it came in a fairly large collection of Victorian stationery I bought many years ago. I had obviously not come across Hoster machine marks. The original collector was an A Cutbill, whose monogram is stamped on the reverse. Most of the used British material came from Leeds.

And the almost invisible town name - compared to the very clear lines and the very clear date - seems to fit "Leeds" with only three letters showing as "L _ ED_".

I've looked at what pictures and information I can find online, including at http://www.stampboards.com/posting.php?mode=quote&f=17&p=716374:


There were apparently eight Hoster machines sold to the Post Office from 1883 to 1886.

The postmark on the one I have is certainly NOT Charing Cross or London EC as they are set out differently.

EC is for instance at the bottom, so hasn't disappeared with the rest of the town name at the top. The third of Asmodeus' cards has a disappeared London but a clear "EC".

From others looked at, mine is probably "LONDON" without "EC" or "NPB". The "D" is centred, rather than to the right - that "D" is probably what I guessed at as an "E". There are some which seem to have much the same wear pattern as mine. Still going for £15 BIN even for unreadable ones on full card.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyll - sometimes shortened further to Llanfair P.G. - is an abbreviated version of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, the village with the longest place name in the UK and Europe. Its mere 58 letters is of course beaten by the 85 letter Taumata­whakatangihanga­koauau­o­tamatea­turi­pukakapiki­maunga­horo­nuku­pokai­whenua­kitanatahu of New Zealand.

You couldn't make it up. But somebody did...
