pitronix - Way to go; keep 'em coming. :)

The area around the village of Vix in northern Burgundy, France is the site of an important prehistoric complex from the Celtic Late Hallstatt and Early La Tène periods, comprising an important fortified settlement and several burial mounds. The most famous of the latter, the Vix Grave, also known as the grave of the Lady of Vix, dates to circa 500 BC. This grave had never been looted and contained remarkably rich grave offerings, including a great deal of jewellery and the bronze Vix krater, the largest known metal vessel from antiquity, measuring 1.63 m (5'4") in height. Here is an image of a stamp depicting a detail of the horses on the Vix krater, designed and engraved by Jacques Combet, and issued by France on March 28, 1966, Scott No. 1149, Y&T No. 1478.

Two new Canadian horsies. For background I'll just type what's on the back of the booklets.

"When one makes sculptures of horses, one remembers all of that great relationship that humans had with them, with the horse. Even today one raises horses only for dressage, the races, for the pleasure of horseback riding. It has become an animal of romance, an animal of pleasure which has lost its utility in the West..."

John Ware was an African-American (and later African-Canadian) cowboy, born into slavery on a South Carolina cotton plantation, circa 1845. At the end of the American Civil War, he headed west to Texas, and in 1882, Ware drove 3,000 cattle north for the North West Cattle Comany - and stayed. Prodigiously strong and known for his skills with the lariat, he pioneered steer wrestling, winning his first competition at the Calgary Summer Fair of 1893, and setting a precedent for what would become a hilight of the Calgary Stampede.

Machaggis52 - Thanks. No, the Sweden Stora Hammars carved horse is not an expensive stamp. I have found that one of the advantages of specializing in collecting intaglio engraved stamps is that so many of them are available at quite reasonable prices.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting an equestrian statue of King John IV (1603-1656), designed by Portuguese artist and painter Henrique Franco (1883-1961), engraved by Renato Araújo (1911-1950), and issued by Portugal in 1940 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the restoration of the monarchy, Scott No. 1588, SG No. 913.

Przewalski's horse (Equus przewalskii) is a rare and endangered subspecies of wild horse native to the steppes of central Asia. Here is an image of a booklet stamp depicting the heads of a pair of Przewalski's horses, designed and engraved by Lars Sjööblom after a photograph by C. Larsson, and issued by Sweden on February 28, 1997, Scott No. 2220, Facit No. 2006.

There is one in a pasture about 1 mile from my house. Interesting looking horse.

EDIT: My wife says it is a Fjord, descended from the Tarpan. They look quite similar, but the Przewalski has 66 chromosomes, and the Fjord has 64, so obviously not descendants. If I get a chance, I'll post a pic of him.

Here is an image of a stamp depicting the Christian knight Geraldo the Fearless (died prob. 1173) on horseback, designed by Portuguese artist Cândido Costa Pinto (1911-1976), printed by lithogravure, and issued by Portugal on June 8, 1966 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Portugal's victory over the Moors, Scott No. 974. Geraldo led a surprise attack and retook Évora from the Moors in 1165.
