I find FDC's a little too run-of-the-mill and thought I might get something a bit more unique by using a selection of in-date commemoratives and putting them through the (UK) postal system.

I can think of a couple of options:

1. Send an inland Special Delivery letter - this costs £5.45 so I'd get a nice looking selection on cover.

2. Send an Airsure letter to an agreeable recipient in Australia (say) who'd would then send it back to me. That'd set me back £5.30 + the regular postage. Again, would be able to eat up a full commemorative set on this one.

All sounds fine, except for the fact it could end up being a rather expensive and frustrating experiment if the letter gets delivered with a) a smudge of black ink on the stamps b) a pen cancel or c) nothing at all.

Any tips on how to get nice, clear CDS cancels...or am I harking back to a service that just doesn't exist anymore?

Nick

Chat up the local Post Office. I know of one (not local) who will happily cancel normal mail for me.

Despite occasional repetition, and publication in UK stamp magazines, it's amazing how many people* still don't know the rules as I wrote up in 2002:
Norvic Philatelics Royal Mail Horizon Postage Labels webpage wrote:
Collectors of British postage stamps have known for years how difficult it is to get very-fine-used (VFU) copies of any stamp. Ordinary letter rate stamps have a machine postmark, higher value stamps on packets have ugly black rubber postmarks, either round(ish) for letters and packets or rectangular for parcels. Postal items bearing these labels will not be cancelled at the sorting office. But - if the postage is partly paid by stamps, then those stamps must be cancelled at the branch when the label is affixed for the balance of the postage cost. And that cancellation must be done with the branch's steel counter date stamp - the very thing that collectors of VFU want!

* Sadly with so much reorganisation in Post Offices, the closure of crown offices and location of even main offices in branches of WHSmith, Lloyds Chemists etc, this applied also to many PO counter personnel. Sometimes reminding them works, sometimes it can lead to heated discussions. Sadly sometimes even inland Special Delivery and overseas Signed For items leave the counter uncancelled :(

I simply go to my friendly local Licensed Post Office and ask the clerk to cancel mail I am sending. Always willing to oblige and, occasionally, ask me to do it myself.

But then you are not in the UK.

My comment was meant in reference to the OP.

Ian, I did realise that. In my defence, however, the thread title does not restrict to UK CDS only. :D

That's the trouble with non-specific titles  . Whilst a general discussion of worldwide pratices might be useful- indeed it's been done before here! - such threads tend to wander too far. Specific advice from UK collectors to a UK collector will be far more useful to the person who asked the question, even if some of the 'foreign' advice may be pertinent.

Fair enough, I will cease and desist commenting on this thread. In future, though, if someone wants specific advice then the tile of the thread needs to be specific as well.

Hey Peter

I may be asking the question from a UK standpoint but that's not to say it isn't interesting to hear what the score is in other parts of the world, so thanks for the contribution. And if a Mod would like to insert 'UK' in between 'decent' and 'CDS' then we're all happy.

Now, to Ian: as a knowledgeable chap in this area, could one use the Permanent Philatelic Handstamp service to guarantee a good CDS? I know that these operational style datestamps exist for around 20 locations but can't find any information on how to obtain them. Certainly doesn't seem to be a service that Royal Mail is keen to promote...

Thanks
Nick

How to get a decent CDS ???????

I would have thought the only way was to get your own stamp made.
… but wait I think that has been done.

I wasn't trying to limit your involvement in particular, Peter, merely musing that meanderings muddle the main discussion  :)

Yes,, that is certainly one way to do it, though of course you are paying full face and the cost of sending whatever you want to the handstamp centre. I have a stock email somewhere to send to people who ask about special handstamps. Your query is slightly different. Send me your email address and I'll give you the details, and references for the postmarks.

These are some of what you need:
