I cannot find where my Scott #536 Mint OGnh goes, in the PSE Set Registry.

Now, so far we have established that the stamp you are asking about is USA 536 as listed in Scott.

And I will take a guess that "OGnh" means Original Gum, No Hinge". So lets keep going. What is "the PSE Set Registry?"

This is an International Board with members from well over 100 Countries, and I can assure you that most members would not have a clue what you are talking about.

The best thing to do would be to post a scan of the stamp in question, as stamp collecting is a visual hobby, and members react far better when they can actually see the stamp in question. Here is a tutorial as to how to post a scan:

Oh, and as a follow-up, having clicked a couple links at random as I'd never looked at the details of this whole grading process before: The Scott numbers are shown nowhere in the PSE Register, only a description of the issue.

So, unless you describe what stamp you are talking about, this thread is pretty useless to all but the handful of North American members with access to a Scott catalogue.

No need to be poetic and wax on with metaphors likening the colour to nature, or the feelings aroused in your bosom by the stamp. Just little things like, oh, year of issue, denomination, y'know, details that would help the rest of the world navigate the service you (eventually) provided a (homepage) link to.

The "Set Registry" link on their homepage is easy enough to find.

This is the well-known (and much-maligned, by some/many) "grading" system, where a stamp can score a 90 or 95 or 98, accompanied by optional "slabbing" (and I've yet to see an album that holds slabbed stamps ).

Now, the difficulty comes in finding "#536". The main index shows

Would you like to be specific about what stamp you're talking about. Being cryptic is fine if one has an Enigma machine, but I have a feeling that darned few Stamboarders do.

Not many more will have a Scott catalogue, so little details like year of issue, denomination, set name would help the 90% of Board members using lowly SG or Michel to maybe help you out with your website troubles.

There is no mistaking #536; issue of August 15, 1919 -- it is the ONLY Perf 12½ 1-cent Washington head (Scott Type A140).

It can also be fraudulently manufactured from a #531 imperforate in the proper shade, although I don't know why anyone would bother; the increase in value is only marginal.

In theory, however, you could make a perfect PSE=100 single from the central stamp of a block of 9 of #531; might as well make it a jumbo while you're carving and punching.

LOL.. I was waiting for someone to say this.. if not, I was going to offer a 99+ from an old imperf. Spoiled my fun, doug. Already had the perfing machine out.

Clydet, we think we understand your question, but unless you're from the USA, you might have a wee bit of trouble with the question.

i will look at the registry for you, and see where it is listed. the main thing we want to know is what kind of information are you looking for, for this stamp?

PSE is used MOSTLY for certifying stamps for grading purposes. Otherwise, you would use the famous and fabulous APS (which, BTW, you aussies and kiwis, is only around $30). Is that what you are after Clydet? how much they would catalogue a really well centered 536?

Somewhere between Bahn's perfing-machine and Norvic's Enigma encryptor, I had an idea. Spies could send secret messages by reperfing an ordinary-looking stamp on their Tuesday snail-mail reports to the CIA or MI5.

For instance, perf 10½ x 11 x 11½ x 12 could mean, "The game's up, bring me home!" Something like that. Oh, the cunning involved! Any perf less than 10 could mean, "They are on to me, disregard all messages!" Or larger than 15 could mean, "Add funds to my PayPal account!"

The gummint could seize Amos Press, publishers of Scott, to prevent all those varieties from clogging up the catalogs.

I forgot, we're cutting postal delivery days left and right. The Tuesday message would not get delivered until Saturday, when no one's working, and not read until the following Wednesday, due to the backlog, a spate of retirement parties, and a flat tyre (sic) on the mail-cart.

Press on! The deskbound agents would be issued little perf gauges to hook on their keychain next to the fingernail clipper, so they'd always be ready to decode. The clipper itself could have an emergency perfing function. Or for field agents, you could disguise a perf gauge as a raggedy-edged credit card.
