lol.. geez. ok, I will bite, how much you want for this history creating rarity?
(surely you know I am joking also - but a fun read. thanks)

Well, I paid 20 cents for it from a dealers junk box, which I know was too much, but I would never sell it. It's become a good talking point on the Boards, and I have trotted it out more than once to much amusement.

Cost...20 cents
Value...priceless.

Besides which, you will need something to cheer up the long cold winter (for Geelong, anyway) that lies ahead. :D

Hi PeterS, the links that Hong Phuc sent ME in an "ebay email" were genuine and I had no trouble with them. He was very contrite after I emailed him again and said he needed to remove them or to remove the auction quotes and to reduce his prices dramatically! His reply to this arrived today

"My friend, thank you very much.
I ended all stamp.
Best Regard,
Hong Phuc
- neko1972"

Why did you take out my posts? Deleting the links was one thing (and not a bad idea just in case!) but to delete my post was not on! Did he send you the EXACT same ebay email? Are you going to get the EXACT same answer on ebay?

Hutch

Hutch, Peter did not touch your post (nor can he - only a Mod or Admin can do this). It is still on the previous page on this thread in all it's original glory, with links intact.

PeterS, I apologise in the extreme  ...we are having major power problems here at the moment (SEC fellows turned up a while ago to fix "some" problem!) All posts are back to normal! My posts are back :? as well as a few others that were not appearing on this thread before as well as other threads! Must be some sort of time frame problem? :?:

The main thing, I think, is that the seller has removed his items and may now consider getting a life...outside of stamp collecting! :)

Thanks, Hutch

Here's a real bargain from seller GJALP, has feedback of (34836) so seems they have been around for a little while, so why botch things up by making up ridiculous prices for a stamp ? Because they have absolutely NO IDEA.

They went through the trouble of finding the stamp in S.G, which for this stamp as a used example is only £4. So where did the asking price of £600 (now reduced to £300 - how kind of them) come from ? Because the stamp has an 'unlisted variety' in the form of 'Compartment Lines'. Yes an incredibly common occurence on Australian KGV Heads is apparently worth adding £296 to the asking price.

Absolutely ridiculous - Another reason why Ebay is no good for collectibles.

Just when things seemed to be going quiet on the Dreamer front, o2ke makes a comeback. Having failed to sell this stamp at AUD 35/BIN AUD53 earlier this week, he has done the really smart thing, and relisted it as AUD 350, BIN AUD 530.

It must be because it is now from an entirely different country:

Original IVA 79 with addition information and art work. Stamp hobby collector item.

Malta 1926 - 7 postage set m/u

0 bids at £999 (seller grestcrestednewt)

While this set is definitey not worthless, the total catalogue value is €165.75 in the latest edition of the JB catalogue:

JB catalogue (2010 edition) wrote:

133 - 4½d - U - €3.00

139 - 3s - M - €16.00
140 - 5s - M - €23.00
141 - 10s - M - €70.00

This seller has quite a lot of other Commonwealth stamps, and they are reasonably priced. I cannot understand why he gave this such a high starting price :? , as he has about 30 other Malta lots and he seems to know the value of what he is selling.

It is now Friday - I sent this joker another email this morning. If he doesn't amend the price or cancel the listing he obviously intends to defraud people (or try to)

I am not familiar with prices for Australian stamps - apart from those quoted by my local dealer who offers not much at all :(

Anyway I have just seen on Ebay UK a Buy it Now offer for the World Columbian Stamp Expo 1992 pack (5 items) at A$50. This sold for A$10.60 in 1992. I'd got the impression since I've joined Stampboards (only last week) that modern Australian stamps typically sold at less than face value.

Is this seller (leebee206) dreaming. Oddly these items are NOT on Ebay.co.au. Is it usual for Australian sellers to sell on the UK site & not the Australian. He must know what he's doing, he has a 100% positive feedback.

Glencottage is confused

glencottage , could you please post a link to the Item, a scan on what is being offered, and the name of the seller. While I am good at a few things, mind reading is not one of them.

Hi Norm

Thanks for your response. These are the URLs for the World Columbian Pack. It is being offered in 3 lots.

The first comprises a souvenir card with SG312 (koala), Sterner booklet SB76 and native animals sheetlet 1328, all overprinted with World Columbian Expo in gold lettering.

The second comprises MS1337 Sailing Ships MS also overprinted.

The third comprises MS1346 International Space Year MS also overprinted. These last two were in a little gold coloured pack but the pack is not included in the Ebay offer, just the mini sheets that were in it.

The seller is Leebee2006 based in Oakleigh South, Victoria, Australia.

If these links don't work, you can just sign on to ebay.co.uk & search' World Columbian Australia' - that will bring them up.

If I've confused you even more, my apologies.

Regards

Tony

1. The links don't work.

2. Where are the scans of the items?

3. If you want information, you need to provide proper links. Nobody is going to chase all over the internet to answer a question you have asked.

This is a visual thread, and everybody provides scans of the items in question, and always have. Please do this.

Maybe he thinks he's got a better chance of getting a high price when offering to sell to someone not familiar with prices for Australian stamps (in Australia). :)

That would be a pretty emphatic yes. Worth around 50% of face to a dealer, to be resold at 75% for postage, and maybe face value or a little bit more on eBay on a very good day. I really hate to think how much Decimal junk is still out there.

so, what you guys are saying, are these new sharks of eBay are the old sharks of the "approval service" of the past? I agree some of them are beyond imagination... well, beyond fantasy. However, I have in my possession some old approvals, still in the original glassines, from 'well-known' US companies whose prices would make a young chap's hair as grey as mine.

As I go through my material, I will post them and we can compare who are the more vicious sharks.

Not at all. The "dreamers" are, as said on the very first post of this thread

otherwise normal people come across a stamp or a stamp collection and suddenly believe that they have discoved the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?

Which is why they are being immortalised here.

This is a different issue. With Approvals in the "good old days" we were mostly paying for packaging and handling fees. So paying a couple of bucks for 10 cents worth of stamps, we were paying for people assembling the product, the plastic cover, the small bit of paper containing the description, and the postage costs and overheads of the person or Company providing the approvals - the stamps were the cheapest part of the overheads.

I bet you never got an approval lot asking $6,999,999 for a few hundred common stamps which is documented earlier on this thread.

Dreamers are not sharks. They are idiots who know not what they have. No approval dealer would offer something like this:

By all means start a thread on overpriced approvals, but it is an entirely different world from the purpose of this thread. You seem to have read about two posts of the thousands on this thread, and come to an incredibly incorrect conclusion.

are these new sharks of eBay are the old sharks of the "approval service" of the past? I agree some of them are beyond imagination... well, beyond fantasy. However, I have in my possession some old approvals, still in the original glassines, from 'well-known' US companies whose prices would make a young chap's hair as grey as mine.

I remember getting approvals in the past from large dealers, where their selling price was full Scott. This was before 1991 or 1989 or whatever year it was that they shifted to "retail values"; in the 'older' days, it was standard practise that things sold at a % of Scott. When I looked up a couple companies' shipments in the catalogue, and say a $1 Scott item was $1 from them, where it would be 60cents say from others, I stopped buying from them.

But their prices were still grounded in reality.

This thread is for the complete loonies. Ben Hayworth and o2ke have provided us seemingly neverending amusement, offering Iron Curtain CTOs and common kid's collection junk that you'd find in a bourse dealer's 5 cent box. Then there's people like the seller above on this page who looked up the 1d red in SG, saw it was catalogued there at 4 quid, then decided that the minor printing flaw of the compartment line somehow increased the stamp's value 75 times.

If a large approval dealer sent out offerings of packet material priced at 4-figures, they would have the most short-lived history as dealers...

"It's got Elvis on it, it must be rare"

Seller joanddean2011 ( Feedback Score Of 4 )

Price: AUD 300. BIN AUD 1,000

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Elvis-Presle ... 3373596eda

Description:

Quote:
What a FANTASTIC RARE ITEM

9 Connected Stamps celebrating the 60th anniversary of Elvis Birth. One in the bottom right hand has been damaged only slighly, however the rest is in mint condition.

Serious bidders only please.

* These are not rare
*These are not even real stamps
* The bottom left hand side is damaged, not the right hand side
* The "stamps" are NOT Mint - they are CTO.

Apart from these points, it's a pretty good description.

no need to cut and paste quotes... but I agree, these guys are comical.

I still think that the old approval service dealers were sharks praying on novices, but what they guys list on eBay, well, either short of genius or totally mad. they just don't have a clue about what they are offering or their values... but most of us have already said that.

make sure you check their "completed listings" to see if they ever sold any. wouldn't it be even funnier if people are buying this stuff?

No, it would not be funny...it would be very sad. And NOT a good thing for our hobby, which is why we try to expose them here. Caveat empor is all fine and good but fools and children still need to be protected in a civilized society. And the STAMPBOARDS community is always civilized :!: :!: :)

I like Elvis...I have a complete collection of his songs...but even I would not buy that damaged set!

If there is a damaged set for sale (at a completely ridiculous price) there must be a good set out there at a reasonable price. But I wouldn't be worried if I never found one!

Where do these people come from?

Sorry but I can't follow your thread of fanciful sellers who either by deliberate intent or innocent stupidity expect to reap a large profit from asking grossly unrealistic prices for very average (and less than) garbage.

"Fools andchildren" ? Aren't there more insidious threats to their wellbeing than blatantly overpriced stamps ?

A sense of proper perspective would be a great place to start without the moral indignation, I mean seriously....

It seems to me that anyone with a speck of common sense and an ounce of decency would try to find out how much something might be worth before trying to sell it on ebay. Otherwise they just pay fees and make no sales.

But then maybe that's just my Lutheran & boy scout experience showing through...

The whole thing about the " dreamers " is theapparent lack of common sense! There are however lots of opportunities to list without fees ! So probably they have nothing to lose- no sale no fee.---------but just maybe some little bunny will nibble the grass!

( I have a free weekend on ebay UK this weekend and can list 100 items free on ebay.com in any month AT ANY START PRICE _ NO FEE!)

The problem here is that "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing" and "A Little Research is Also a Dangerous Thing"

Just a couple of pages ago I listed some items where somebody had gone to a lot of trouble to "research" his one cent stamps, assumed that some Auction results for high(ish) prices that he found were the same stamps that he had (they were not) and even went so far as cutting and pasting the Auction descriptions into his listing, which made his listings (and him) look even more stupid.

Quite a few pages ago we went through a "German Inflation Stamps are all Valuable" period which was traced back to a grossly incorrect online blog. One eBay dreamer started the whole thing, and several sheep followed, building up on each others eBay listings until there were pages of 10 cent stamps being offered for up to 5 figures, because of incorrect (bad) research.

Much earlier, one eBayer found an Auction result for an Australian KGV Penny Red, which sold for over $20,000, and promptly started listing his perfectly common 1d Reds at $1,000's.

These people simply so not know what they are doing, which makes this whole thing funny, and fortunately (as I do follow up on all items listed here after closure) none of their overpriced crap ever sells.

Norm.

Gringo,

HUH??
"Let the buyer beware..." is caveat emptor. So you didn't get it, which is why there's a non-sequitur in your response.

"Moral indignation?" that's not moral indignation. It's an opinion. Go to church man. You'll have a better sense of moral indignation. Key point...it IS bad for our hobby to let the sheisters take advantage. Remember, "All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to say nothing."

A phrase which is unfortunately used far too often in a sententious manner to talk about ordinary everyday crooks, rather than the likes of Joseph Kony or even Fidesz, thus rendering it somewhat bathetic. I think that does lack proper perspective, especially as here we aren't even talking about people who are crooks -- just idiots.

How about another Delcampe Dreamer for a bit of a change? Seller Manne offers this

Image

http://www.delcampe.net/item.php?language=E&id=0165807402

Cochin SG 108 for $US79, and tells us that it's Scott #88 and has a catalogue value of $US225. I know Scott isn't always entirely on top of the Indian States market, but Gibbons (over)prices it at £2.50.

As Gibbons rates this stamp unused at £95, you don't suppose seller Manne has suffered a small lapse of concentration, do you?

It would not be the first time I have seen cancelled used stamps described as "mint" or "unused", simply because they have been soaked off paper. There is even one earlier on this thread.

There is also the interesting phrase, seen more often than it needs to be "used, almost mint", and another "used mint", no I am not joking, and they were not CTO's.

Norm, the seller was in no doubt about the status of the item. His heading was "-Cochin-1946-"Maharaja Ravi Varma" Used (The 3 Anna)".

Oooh, I do so love smashing others' dreams

Norm,

IMO it's very worthwhile. :D

Always worth a read when I'm bored or need something to smile at... The stupidity of some sellers amazes me, but hey it can be entertaining. :D

100,000 views shows I'm not the only one who loves this thread.

I agree 100%, just as "anyone with a speck of common sense and an ounce of decency would try to find out how much something might be worth before trying to buy it on ebay.Otherwise they just pay money and make no gain."

A type a "quid pro quo".

And as 'Timbres' stated, "Caveat emptor".

Or in other words, get around in life with your eyes WIDE open and don't involve yourself in areas you know nothing about.

Especially the "fools and children out there".......

Fortunately, no "fools and children" have ever wasted any money on buying the dreamer items listed on this thread.

What are you talking about?

I stated that I follow every Dreamer link on this thread after closure, as any other member can confirm that they do not sell. Which was the point of my response.

So, without going into "wow, this is deep man" land, which is where your fairly incoherent response is headed can you explain in plain English what, if any point you are trying to make. And talking in English would help.
