Australia issued 3 high value definitives (5/-, 10/- and £1) with the the King and Queen in Coronation Robes, although they were not issued for the coronation.

There was an issue in 1953 to commemorate the Coronation of HM QEII, though.

Ah yes...the rebellious colony.

I think the omnibus issues, traditionally, came from Crown Colonies. Australia was not a Crown Colony, but an independent (and loyal) member of the Commonwealth. :D

As of 1931, there were several divestitures of the crown that led independence. Are you sure Peter that only those still considered crown colonies participated and that newly formed independents like Australia and Canada did not? I don't know my history and commonwealth connections well enough to cite all the dates and relationships...just curious.

It is the 1937 omnibus issue cornation covers that I need and the countries I need are: Straits Settlements Mayaya, Falkland Islands, Swaziland, Bastutoland, N. Rhodesia, Grenada, Sierra Leone, Virgin Islands, Kenya Uganda and Tanganyika, Mauritius, Cook Islands, Hong Kong, Kenya, St. Helena, Gilbert and Ellice, Somaliland, Malta, Leeward Islands and the 1st flight cover Auckland to Wellington. (I think I got all the British colinies between these countries and the ones in my last post.)

When I have these I feel my collection will be correct and complete. Then the next issue is how to put them together as a exhibit. If any of the GOMC's and/or other Stampboards members can help me aquire them, as E-bay is the land of overcharged items and pipedream prices.

Australia hasn't participate in ANY omnibus issue, ever, even though it has issued stamps to commemorate common events (such as the 1953 Coronation). As the Emperor Claudius is supposed to have said, "A radish may know no Greek, but I do." :D

By 1937. Australia had been a Federation for 36 years, so not really all that newly independent. :D

Aw Philly...don't feel so bad. Know of some kids that got their folks a cell phone and paid for it through their family plan. They felt better that their parents now had anywhere access. They saw the oldtimers hadn't used it in the year so they asked them about it. "Well," they said, "we don't know any of our friends who has one, so there's no one we can call with it."

So when you give a modern gift, make sure you explain the full range of use. Philly, cell phones can be used to call ANY phone, not just another cell. :)

Glad to see PeterS, that you are willing to help out the colonials whom know nothing or very little about Commonwealth politics.
I think it was Crown Agents who did the omnibus series- lazy buggers, cut one stamp with drop in slugs.

Be careful making assumptions Waroff....just because I live in the colony doesn't make me a colonial anymore than all the people in Oz being Ozzies...or descendent of criminals.....

Not an assumption, a statement of fact. Most of the better people live in colonies, some have aires and graces and some are down to earth. As for the convict side of it, it's all a myth. Most of Auistralia's population would love to have a family member who emigrated in the the First or Second Fleet but unfortunately many more arrived chasing the illusive 'yellow' stuff, even some of the American colonials.
Why there were even some from Scotland........

Aye, the love of that yellow stuff has been many a man's demise. There was a fair bit of that here too especially in '49.

Timbres, just a correction in your understanding. It is a fact that all who live in Oz (Aus in the Australian vernacular) are Ozzies (Aussies in the Australian vernacular). We have no particular prejudices on where you come from, but please all ethnic hatreds et al at the door on the way in. :D

Heck, we even allow Americans to immigrate! How much more open can a country be, I ask you??

And we send a few the other way also. Why even as recently as yesterday, we had 200 US marines come over for a holiday camp up in sunny Darwin. Darwin being in the North of nowhere and a couple of thousands Kms. from any real city. We figured they couldn't do much damage, it's so remote.

My out of date Brit Clth SG ( but who cares for 1937 ) states that there are 202 stamps issued for this event;
1 Great Britain
3 Antigua
3 Ascension
3 Bahamas
3 Barbados
3 Brit Honduras
3 Bermuda
3 Bechuanaland
3 Bri Virgin Is
1 Canada
14 Newfoundland
3 Cayman Is
3 Cook Is
3 Cyprus
3 Dominica
3 Falkland Is
3 Fiji
3 Gambia
3 Gold Coast
3 Gibraltar
3 Gilbert & Ellice Is
3 Grenada
3 Brit Guiana
3 Hong Kong
3 Jamaica
3 KUT
3 Leeward Is
3 Basutoland
3 Nyassaland
3 Malay State
3 Malta
3 Mauritius
3 Montserat
3 Morocco Agency
8 x 2 South West Africa
4 Nauru
3 New Zealand
3 Nigeria
3 Niue
1 Pakistan Officials
4 Papua
4 New Guinea
3 St Helena
3 St Kitts-Nevis
3 St Lucia
3 St Vincent
3 Seycheles
3 Sierra Leone
3 Solomon Is
3 Somalland Protectorate
5 X 2 South Africa
3 Aden
3 Ceylon
3 Swaziland
3 Trinidad & Tobago
3 Turks & Caicos Is
3 Northern Rhodesia
3 Southern Rhodesia ( I think/hope that is 202 )
The sets of three are the omnibus issues ( yes, I think it was the connection to Crown Agents rather than a political thing )
with Newfoundland useing 3 plus their own. which will be $$$$
The usual date of issue was the 6th May, 1937
Australia issued 2 definitive stamps of the King and Queen on 10th May, 1937 and commencing 4th February, 1938 the Robes high value stamps.$$$$
Be glad that the Grenadinies of Grenada and Boganville and Abcdefghistan were not around at this time.
Also, some such as Niue and Cook Islands are overprints of the New Zealand stamps.
The Cook Is, Niue, New Zealnd and Gilbert & Ellice Is, Fiji, Papua, New Guinea etc are around in Aust.
Send an email as to how much you are prepared to spend and we will keep an eye out for you.
Regards

Peter,
I think maybe we will disagree. I believe everyone has a right to their origin, traditions, culture, etc. and should be proud of them without apology. To suggest that everyone who lives in Oz is an Ozzie is political correctness gone amuck to me. A genuinely unprejudiced person accepts, even enjoys the differences each people bring and the healthiest societies are not "blended" but are more like a salad, with each retaining their own flavor and uniqueness but contributing to the benefit of the whole.

More than that, to chant the "we are all the same," mantra when we obviously are not, can be seen as a more subtle and refined form of racism, since it is ultimately annihilistic, doing away with all those wonderful differences "at the door" as you say, on this pretense of getting along and being the same. It's dishonest and disrespectful.

Let's get past that. We all carry some level of prejudice because we have likes and dislikes and preferences. The problem is when we condem or hate someone due to their ethnicity or judge them inferior. They're not. They're just different and that's okay...no, it's wonderful. Women are very different and I like them. :)

So...I'll get off my soapbox now. Just had to respond to your statement. I've heard it before. Sounds good, but it's flawed I think.

HUHH!! :?: :?: :?: :?:

Lets get something straight here --

I like what my wife likes

I dislike what my wife dislikes

The fact that she is a woman and is different has nothing to do with it at all

It's just that it makes my life a whole lot easier

You are taking what I said far too literally. What is meant is that, however diverse, everybody is accepted as being an Aussie if they live here. Unless you are implying that being labelled an Aussie is pejorative? :?

Australia has immigrants that have come from every place on the planet. In my opinion, we are better off for the diversity.

We even have a term for the diversity, Multiculturalism. But, as I said, leave all the ethnic hatred baggage at the border. We don't want people of Greek or Turkish ethnicity brawling in the streets (for example), it's messy and takes forever to clean up the blood.

We're good Peter. Just saw an oppty to rant so I took it. I just get tired of all the "meling pot" analogies.

Now Ken.....

Seems to me you were recently wingeing about your wife not caring about a particular stamp you wanted. So maybe you like everything she likes...but it's not working the other way around :) :D

For what it's worth; I have a theory that Australia (I mean the land) changes people's perspectives over a couple of generations. The ethnic fighting that went on in the 1850s (particularly in Victoria) saw some truly horrible consequences for a number of groups - not just the Chinese.

I agree with Timbres when he says that
"to chant the "we are all the same," mantra when we obviously are not, can be seen as a more subtle and refined form of racism, since it is ultimately annihilistic, doing away with all those wonderful differences "at the door" as you say, on this pretense of getting along and being the same. but multiculturalism takes many forms. You can be an Aussie, and still be from a Jewish-Chinese background; or Buddhist-Portuguese; or Calathumpian-Sikh; or whatever.....and nobody (in my neck of the woods anyway) is going to give a damn about your background - they'll be more interested in whether you're a good bloke.

A blind person can't tell the colour of your skin; a deaf person can't hear your accent; an Aussie (mostly  ) just wants to know if you'll 'shout' when it's your turn :D

I used to work with a guy who was 4th generation Australian of Chinese extraction. It was at Williamstown Dockyard, when it was still a defence facility. We had a couple of Americans out (from Todd Seattle Shipyards - we were building FFG class frigates for the RAN) and they caught teh train with us once. One of the Yanks asked Jimmy how long he had been in Australia.

Well, he replied in the broadest Australian accent you have ever heard (it was his usual method of speech) that he was "bloody born here, mate!" Those of us who knew him were nearly rolling in the aisles laughing by this time. You should have seen the looks on the faces of our guests.

They had profiled him, but not in a spiteful way. :)

Bloody hell! I just realised I am getting old! Those FFGs have already been decommissioned and, mostly, sunk as dive wrecks!

Used to go to school (small-town school - 20 kids tops) and there were only 5 in my grade.....one was from a Chinese background and another was from an Italian background. Both were 6th generation Australian born - I'm only 4th generation

For Philly...

(I cleaned it up a bit.)
Reminds me of an advertisement I found in one of the early 1839 Geelong Advertiser issues; "Kitchen stockpot for sale. Capable of cooking 40 persons....."

I can't really afford to have any prejudices. From what I know, I have French, Scottish (god forbid), English and Jewish (yes, I know - no need to point out the obvious) heritage. And the English, by extension, would probably include at least some Italian, or more accurately Roman ancestry.

No convicts that I know of - 1850's - but farmers from the Ballarat region, not yellow hunters. We just sold stuff to those who found the yellow stuff so that they would be eating enough to stay strong, and find more yellow stuff.

But as survivor types, we apparently stayed well away from Eureka.

One of the Melbourne City Councillors for a very long time was a gentleman of Chinese origins. Cant think of his name at the moment. :? :? :? but he stood and won elections.
I used to meet him every ANZAC day as he had been in RAAF during WW11

Yes Philly, John So was the gents name and he was re-elected for a second term. :!:

The former lot were elected by councillors, but John So was elected by the people.

There was a very popular Lord Mayor of Chinese extaction in Darwin in the 1980's. John So was born in China, and presided over the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

No, this was another gentleman from an earlier period, that I was thinking of.
John So became Lord Mayor, but this chap did not,
but was on the council over a long period of time. 1980s and 1990s :?: :?: :?:

It's not where you're from but what you do, that is important. Great men are great because of what they do, not because of where they came from.

I find myself in complete agreement with you Waroff. Damned if I know where I went wrong, but I can't find a reason not to disagree.

To All the Grumpy Old Men from the GOMC -

I wish you a happy Easter.

I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable time with your family and friends.

I trust the Easter Bunny will do at least a little dump somewhere in your region.

Thanks for your forum, a major highlight of my day is to see what is happening there.

Easter Rabbits are the go, BUT
for years Easter Bilbies have been becoming more popular.
The Bilby is a native animal, marsupial, life style similar to the rabbit and similar in size ( but becoming scare as they do not have the rabbit's breeding ability ) more solitary and are hunted by feral cats and foxes.
Kangaroos....NO, it is too hard to get the egg out of the pouch

How can you say 'Happy Easter', it is a really sad time, for believers in the Christian faith but on the other hand 'Happy Resurrection' is a different matter.

Isn't Easter the annual festival of chocolate manufacturers?
