This one is on eBay at the moment for $510.00, which is pretty reasonable to me, although the contents don't appear quite right. Where are the rest of the 1964 Birds?.

Norm, the set contains the flowers definitives. The only value bird that is different (in terms of face value) is the 2/5d. Only current stamps were included in sets at that time. I haven't got my catalogue handy but I suspect the 2/5d was issued before the other values, hence the makeup of this pack.

If it is unhinged then it would be a steal at $510, but I wouldn't expect it to go for that low a price.

No bid with 8 hours to go. Snipe, anyone?

I just looked a few up - the 6d and 9d were issued on the same date as the 2/5d. There is no 6d stamp at all - it should be either the Bird or the 1959 animal.

I know commemoratives were excluded a bit after the war, but definitives?

Norm, might not be complete. The value is in the Navigators anyway.

Clive, you won a Gift on the Stampboards 5th Anniversary Giveaway thread, and were eMailed, and have not apparently responded. It may have turned up in your Spam box, or maybe have been bounced by your firewall.

And since I'm here, this collectors' pack -

Image

The £2 navigator wasn't issued until August 1964, so that has to be the earliest possible date for the pack, assuming it is essentially genuine.

The 2/- and 3/- flower defins were replaced in April 1965 by the relevant birds' stamps. So I'm guessing the pack dates from about September 1964 and May 1965.

I have a late pre-decimal pack in which the stamps are postmarked May 1965. I've posted it here before but for convenience -

Image

It comes with AAT and Cocos also.

As far as I know, this was the last pre-decimal collectors' pack issued.

Well, it didn't get a bid, so is passed in at the 'reserve' of $510.

The seller was not a 'stamp person', at least not as far as eBay sales are concerned. This is vastly different from his usual wares. Maybe that deterred some prospective bidders.

A bargain missed? Or has everyone who wants them got a set of specimen navigators?

Glen, there were Victoria CTO cancels right up to 1912. Here's one from 1906, for example.

I had sent the seller an email, before bidding ended, which he finally replied to. The stamps are all unhinged. We agreed on a price of $450. :D

Peter - be warned all you are really buying are the Navs money wise.

And despite his usual crapola ebay size scan the £1 is perfs touching, that much is clear. The 7/6d and £2 are not so hot either as far as one can see on the tiny scan.

You will NEVER find a single stamp to be able to improve the set. A set of 4 with perfs touching is basically unsaleable as they are sold as a UNIT.

If you will not buy 1913 Roos with perfs touching, why on earth pay ANYTHING for mid QE2 era perfs-touching, issued 50 years later?? That makes ZERO sense.

Not all ebay "bargains" are in fact "bargains".

This is a set from stock, and unless they are this grade or better centering, darn hard if not impossible to shift.

Glen, what you say is true. Have another look at the £2 and see if you noticed what I noticed.

Peter yes I saw the type D font on 10/- and the lower setting on the poor centred £2 (I do this for a living!) and that does not alter the fact these will not EVER get you $450 if you try and sell them. IMHO.

And this is ebay - the backs may have no gum, or spots all over them .. you have zero clue what these clueless Schmucks will mail you.

Hi all,

I picked up these 2 small multiple watermark at the weekend, I am pretty sure they are CTO, grateful for confirmation though.

No gum but at a price of £2.50 they seemed a bargain and I did not have CTO of the 4d in my collection and not this shade in the 5d.

Lundy,

Nice buying. The Australian Commonwealth Specialists Catalogue prices these at $15 for the 4d and $20 for the 5d.

Very good perfs and well centred for these. And yes, CTO.

A bargain.

It is either a postally used or has come from a FDC.

Seller 1915cazna had several CTO first watermark roos which sold on eBay last night. The star turn was a 1d red -
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270949528778 ... 1423.l2649

Image

which sold for $89.88.  If I recall correctly, this is the second 1d red within a few months that has gone off for that sort of price on eBay. It's a very nice stamp, but ninety dollars?

A couple of the other prices fetched weren't too shabby, either -
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/280858354441 ... 1423.l2649
Image

This went for $62.

Image

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270949529846 ... 1423.l2648
This sold for $46.67.

An off-centred 2½d (with flat-topped 3 cancel) went for $29.88.

And what I thought was a quite respectable 5d sold for $36.99, which seems a bargain.

I think the prices being gotten for the low values reflects their relative scarcity, when compared with the 9d and above.

Quite likely.

But I don't think there is an 'easy' explanation for why the 1d red gets such a high price, relative to others in the range ½d to 1/. I don't get the sense that the 1d comes up less often than the other 'low' values.

Still, on the other hand it was a really nice stamp, even allowing for a couple of nibbled perfs. Nicely centred, very good margins, good clear strike of the canceller. But ninety dollars?

Do you think the same or a similar quality stamp would pull ninety dollars if offered on Stampboards?

Perhaps not. Funny things can happen in auctions, the underbidder on the 1d red is a well known CTO enthusiast.

As a $90 Buy-It-Now it probably would have been ignored, and considered overpriced. The two top bidders likely didn't expect the competition from each other that eventuated.

I would have expected maybe $60 being fetched for it, and it probably would have a couple of months ago, but who's to argue with the market?

As you know, I was the underbidder.

I put in an $88.88 bid when it was showing $50, and went that high only to avoid losing it 'for a few more dollars' from a snipe. Thought $60-65 would do it comfortably, and was very confident. Shows what I know. Obviously have no idea what the winner's high bid would have been, but good on him/her.

Clive, the other possibility is that the fact that it was the 'normal' cancel might have contributed as well. The flat 3 cancel seems to be slightly more common for the 1d than most of the other values it appears on.

Well after the bi-annual Toronto Stamp Show I have some goodies to post.
And to contrast the last few posts I will tell you what I paid for them.
As a tease the dealer to his own admission has not updated his Australian stamp prices in years and had fairly extensive used stock. :)

Of course the first thing he had was used first watermark roos with a priced at $1.00. This quickly made it to the sold pile.

Any way that was it for his CTO stamps.
I think the most any one of them cost me was $12.00.
I did spend $16.00 on a stamp but you going to have to go to the roo thread for that one as its pretty special as well. :)
The old knowledge is power was certianly on my side today.

Yes amfhf1, North American sellers seem to have no idea CTO cancels can make 10c stamps into $90 ones like this below.

The seller of this (also a member) attributes stampboards entirely to his sales success, as bidder and under-bidder were from here.

Well, it is without question the cancel used on CTO stamps of the period - it was discussed a few pages back in the context of the C1 postal district. And full gum to boot.

Funny thing - these ½d roos are everywhere, like rabbits the other side of The Fence, but you don't see blocks of four like that too often.

Still, if you want to write it off, I'll do the right thing and take it off your hands. :)

Seller 1915cazna had several CTO first watermark roos which sold on eBay last night. The star turn was a 1d red -

Which sold for $89.88.  If I recall correctly, this is the second 1d red within a few months that has gone off for that sort of price on eBay. It's a very nice stamp, but ninety dollars?

I do not get it?

This is a common 1d red, and Clive is under-bidder to the $90?

The world is going mad!

My used Roos book just doubled in value.

Yeah, mine too!!! :D :D :D

CTO roos may be flavour of the month but buyers can still be choosy.

This was sold on eBay by seller kcollectible -

It went for $33. Kcollectible is a decent person but I had to smile at his description, which in part read -

"The perfs are slightly nibbled in places ..."

Is it true - Kcollectible has also gone into selling fresh fruit?

This apple might be accurately described as - "juicy apple - only slightly nibbled in places".

I saw that one I decided to pass on it as well the nibbling was done by a rat as opposed to a mouse lol.
