Hi!

I just saw this item on ebay and, WOW, wondered about the high bids! What is so special about it?

http://www.ebay.de/itm/AUSTRALIA-1d-d-d ... 35bb5c266d

Thanks a lot!

Don't forget to post pic, item no, item description and seller name.

As for the price, no idea why so high but I'm sure postal stationery experts will have an idea. :D

Printed to Private Order envelope with a triple 'printed' impression.

Doubletons are scarce I suspect this is as rare as rocking horse manure. I am no expert on these but my thoughts are stock held by Vacuum Oil were sent back to the P.O. and uprated once and then uprated again, or limited stock prepared for overseas useage.

Hi all :)
From memory a similar cover was auctioned by Prestige Philately last year or the year before. It is an extremely rare item about 6 or 7 known (if I remember correctly)

Maybe I will post the actual realisation at Prestige after the ebay auction is closed (as I don't think it is a right thing to post it now whilst the ebay auction is still on)

Cheers
Alex

May I know why it shouldn`t be revealed here NOW???

I think there is no reason the information should not be revealed now

Hi there
I just thought to answer josto's original post. I know this item is rare and the actual realisation at Prestige which reflects its scarcity. But I don't think it is fair nor it is up to me to post the actual realisation now until the ebay auction is finished, as I don't want to do anything to influence the outcome of the auction.

I am sure when you or anyone bidding on ebay or any online auctions, the last thing you want is to have someone telling everyone how really rare an item that you are bidding is and its true value?

Cheers
Alex

Well, that may be fair (or indeed overly-fair) to the bidders, but is it really fair to the seller?

Firstly anything from Prestige is in the public domain anyway...

...and secondly, there's absolutely no certainty that any/all bidders will be aware of anything posted on this thread

That cat is out of the bag and running out the door now. Look at the discussion so far, the fact that Prestige offered an example has been stated; the fact that there are only 6 or 7 known has been stated; several collectors have chimed in with admiration for the item. Were interested bidders to stumble on this thread, they'd read "Prestige had one" and pop off to the Prestige website to look through the archived catalogues and prices realized. All you're doing is making a bit of extra work for them. The fact that the item is at $2,500+ already shows that lots of people have seen it, it hasn't flown under the radar, and someone can snap it up for $0.99.

Ok due to popular demand (or pressure) from everyone here and saying that I should reveal what it was realised at Prestige - here is the link:

A great bargain in comparison to the more common inverted Jenny, and this cover is no error.

Starting price was $399, so no one could have snapped it up for 99c

Well I think the cat is now right outside the door and may have already been run over by a truck  .

And I think it is only fair that, whoever wants to bid on this item, should do a bit of extra work and research for themselves. I see no problem to "make them to do a bit more work". Isn't that part of the fun of chasing / learning / researching? In fact, those who really know this area shouldn't really need me to remind them how rare this item is.

I just thought to increase the level of interest / awareness to this item, as it is very rarely that on ebay it has such rarity for sale. Disclaimer: I am not the seller nor the bidder!

So far there are only 2 bids, and I will be interested to see how it goes at the end.

And to another comment who said I am not being fair to sellers..... well I guess if we all want to be fair to ebay sellers then we should have ban gixen or all other sniping softwares

It's got over five days to go, so it's unlikely that the real action will take place for about 125 hours yet. :)

OK, let's make a game out of this, guess the realisation.

I don't think it will get as high as the Prestige result as Prestige seems to get the maximum on prestige items such as that.

I will start by guessing $7250,

David B.

At this level of rarity - I can see five figures - so $10,500.

However, with two (or more) snipers I could see it topping that number by quite a bit.

A sleeper (at the moment) to watch in the same sellers current items is this one.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AUSTRALIA-1d ... 0695969150

Image

Why did I suggest that it might be a sleeper (with snipe bids galore). I suspect it is just as rare as this one that sold some years back. It sold for $800 plus add ons. And this is a cheapy with regards to these.

I guess I'll say it, as inevitably someone will: what's it doing on eBay?

Although if the seller is reputable (and a fair number of big dealers are on eBay), then they stand to get a fair price. Although on the other hand, if its an established dealer, they would probably have a client they could place the item with directly, or contacts to arrange a private treaty deal, no need to throw away money to feeBay.

Maybe its a new discovery? The fact the seller started it at $399 could suggest they know something about stamps and the value, or maybe it was a naive "it looks unusual, I'll ask a lot for it" thing.

As to guessing final bid--this is eBay, where silly odd snipe prices often rule. So I'll say $10,325.01

Are postal stationeries (private ones) so rare? Jesus, I will have a good look here.... Perhaps I will find a few :D

I´ve got a few stationeries of Great Britain and there are only a few known used or never recorded and I would never get these prices!!!

That's what I was thinking ...! The unique and utterly unexpected 1840 4d Houses of Parliament item that was recently discovered failed to sell at David Feldman more than once at this sort of price level. I've got a couple of previously unrecorded and apparently unique GVI items myself, both of which cost in the £20-40 range.

Presumably this is just a case of early Australian stuff being red hot due to local demand, and/or this particular item being one of those "headline" items that become famous and widely demanded, and hence fetch prices an order of magnitude above items of similar rarity and significance?

I was speaking to a well known Sydney dealer this morning about the item and he told me that a part front of the same item showing the logo at left and the imprinted stamps was privately sold this week in Sydney for $200. Both the buyer and seller knew the amount the full cover realised on Prestige,

To a cover collector having a part cover is a bit like having a part stamp and would be valued accordingly.

Of course the Vacuum Office will have something to do with the rarity as well.

The cover is from the Fremantle office and probably saw less use than the offices on the Eastern sea-board. Melbourne is more common and would have seen more usage so probable wasn't re-printed twice.

This cover was a Kangaroo and States combination is from the Melbourne office and was reserved at $960. (Didn't sell) It is used over two years after the introduction of the Kangaroo stamps, so Vacuum must have held a fair amount of stock.

The results are in. $7,423.12 for the envelope in question.

An honourable mention goes to the Rosella cover.

no, but the buyer that paid the Prestige price must be wondering,

I noticed that the buyer placed a secondary higher bid, wonder if it will turn up at a Prestige sale or if he personally wanted the cover,

Possibly the same buyer,
But originally sold $12,880, then $14,500
Now $7233.12,
but if there are only 6 Hen's teeth out there, and you want to complete your collection :?:
By the way

I spoke to someone very senior in the trade on this during the week, who mused it was worth at least $10,000 to any savvy buyer.

I noted the winner has only 1 feedback. 8)

Why these folks send key pieces of ANYTHING to ebay and not a real auction sure beats me. It just cost this seller around $3000 minimum, as history will soon show.

The winning bidder on the Rosella cover has a feedback of 262.

Item number: 300695969150
Winning Bid: US $1,300.00
Ended: 4/21/2012 6:00:25 PM
Bid count: 16
High bidder: a***n (262)

The underbidder on the Rosella cover was the buyer of the Vacuum cover, the Indian Motor Cycle cover and bought the Vacuum doubleton cover for $382.77.

Very possibly someone who would have bought them to list at an Australian auction.

But then again a zero feedback bought this N.Z. cover for $577.77 and $272.77 for the other N.Z cover.

With all these low feedback bidders winning lots, it raises a few questions.

The same zero buyer bought this one.

If I was the seller and did get paid, I would be sending them all with multiple tracking and insurance.

Maybe a specialist was alerted to these, and set up an account speficially to bid on them. Maybe...

If you were to 'flip' the Vacuum cover by running it at auction, what if it doesn't sell? If you weren't interested in the item, and just out to resell, it would be a bit of a gamble, as you'd then be 'stuck' finding somewhere to sell it.

Hey, I'd have bought them to list at an Australian auction if I had a spare $10,000 for arm-chancing purposes. :)
