Thanks a lot for that, I may have to chase down a copy of that book if one pops up in the future. :)

That Telegherry is now on eBay, incidentally.

2 x diff. Aust FRAMA "Zero" (00.00) labels on Certified Mail Priority cover!

Amazing cover that I was able to prepare a few of when I lived at Hunters Hill, back in 1986. Found them in a box today.

That was 26 years ago! My, how time flies.

I lived literally opposite the PO and was in there many times a day, and in the early 80s to 1990 there were never any time slugs AFAIK.

:  OK Sportsfans! Things have been very interesting, and I for one applaud your myriad abilities and resources. But now, it's time for a couple a little more challenging. I've spent entirely too much time fruitlessly on these and need your help. Have fun! On a related question can anyone tell me what is the best program for enhancing or contrasting stamp shades/colors to help deduce cancels? Thank you.

Hello Micky,

Your MPO looks like an overseas base marking - probably North Africa from the date - 1943.

Helllo Micky,

That is Melbourne C.1 - GPO in central city district.
The AIR annotation is the airmail sorting room, probably for mail posted in a special airmail box at the GPO.

Thank you very much Alice, I love Gimp2 and use it on any difficult cancel. As you said it's easy to install, and very user friendly. By the way I used to live in Canberra (Hughes) while I was studying at the ANU back in the 70's.

I'm posting a few I couldn't work out and hope a few of our sleuths have fun with:D

An interesting cancel. It is a British Army MPO cancellation used in Egypt. A shame the only visible identifying characters are 'E' and '6'. Three of these MPO cancellers were used by Australian forces in Egypt - E. 607, E. 608 & E. 609. Similar FPO cancellers also used by Australian forces were E. 605, E. 606 & E.611.

The 1943 date is a late usage for these cancellers. The 9th Division, the last Australian formation in Egypt, departed for Australia on 24 January 1943.

:D :D Oh thank you Al, now you mentioned it I wish the cancel was full  , fascinating information from a little stamp the same year my dad was born although his day is another 7 months away. How do you come by this information or is it a "If I tell you I have to something something" :P

Many thanks again, I will put up a clearer scan when it arrives.

Edward Proud History of British Army Postal Service Vol III 1927-1963 is the reference.

I don't have a copy, but I have photocopies of small sections of the book relating to mainly Australian forces in the Middle East.

Yes, I make it a MARSEILLE PAQUEBOT cancel, but I can't determine which one because of the overstrikes at the left.

All of the Marseille Paquebot cancels are reasonably common ... but I suspect there would not be many on the stamps of South Australia.

Possibly: Kensington Gardens (South Australia) PO 6/1/1947; renamed Kensington PO 1/9/1967.

Printed bars and first letter are distorted at point of contact.

It ends with Games but I can not find a listing on the PPA site other than the 56 Olympic Games.

Maybe a temporary cancel for the 1938 Commonwealth Games?

Perusing an album I bought a while ago, I came across this one, almost looks like a cto. Is it a Commonwealth Games cancel ? Or am I imagining the letters *ALTH GA*

Yes I read that when I googled commonwealth games postmark, and it brought up the old thread. so I was just using it to highlight my 1/4d cancel with the ALTH GA showing, sorry for confusing you mcgooley.

Donald,

Your 1/4 KGV is probably 'Commonwealth Offices Melbourne'.
The games were only the Empire Games in those pre-war days.

'Commonwealth Offices Melbourne' looks good to me, Alice thank you. Isn't it typical how your eyes make out one thing, and a suggestion from someone else, and suddenly that GA becomes a clear OF ! With a bonus of a closed Post Office :D

Yes Donald, postmarks often mystify or mislead us.
I have a puzzling one. It looks like Wyarula or Wiarula but is not in the PPA list. It looks like NSW at the bottom.

Thanks Donald, I missed that one - at least the name has changed slightly.
If you wondered about the colour shade of the stamp it has been modified in contrast and brightness.
The original is a deeper orange.

This one is a bit smudged but to me it looks like its ? No. 5 G.R. Queensland, is there such a postmark ?

Here's another version of it.

Donald,

This seems to be 1R25,
and if you try a search for TPO No 5 Queensland one of the items throws up a link to a site 'boomspeed'.
Hope this helps.

Regards

Thanks clemo, I queried whether it was 1R25 on the KGV head thread. I'm leaning toward the postmark being T.P.O. No.5 C.R. Queensland now, as that makes more sense, the C.R. being for Central Railway, rather than a smudged G. as my first instinct.

My theory

The cancellation reads TPO No 6 CR. I have other examples used in 1920 with the unusual blue ink. The cancellation was actually used on TPO #1. It is also UP meaning away from Brisbane.

A poor smudged dexamples of a not rare cancel, except for the blue ink.
