Hi

BEWS is certainly the only BEW listed in Overton with a XX rating which is quite rare.

Apologies this is not about the squared circle on this and the picture is not great as I am having problems with my lap top.

Does anybody know what this part postmark is?? It looks like a crown, the stamp is in poor shape so it is not about value just curiosity

Image

Thanks and I will add a better scan when I have sorted my lap top problem

Nice cover, Traralgon. The last recorded date of that cancel that I know of is April 27, 1942, so yours is late but there are even later ones.

That looks like a negative lead bag seal impression dipped into the ink pad. Will have office name - in reverse - around the crown.

They were SUPPOSED to only be used to impress into the hot red wax seals of mailbags but sometimes were used to cancel at busy times or when cancel was broken etc.

Known used thus from most of the states here.

Killalpaninna Type 2 -- my favourite squared circle (see my avatar) and one of the rare ones -- it was a German missionary settlement that was closed down during World War 1, and is now a ghost town.

Stockwell is common and that's right in the middle of the usage period.

Nairne Type 3, time code 2. Common and right in the middle of the usage period for Type 3. I haven't seen code 2 used that late, but I'm the only person on the planet who cares and I suspect it was used until 1919 -- but you just bumped the last recorded date for that time code by a couple of weeks.

Hi Lundy, from what I can gather that cancel is called a Barred Oval or a Barred Circle..

I notice that yours has only 5 bars interupted, whereas the only reference I have talks of 7 bars interupted, with a total of 13 bars..

Some have numbers in them, but the reference I have doesn't go into great detail ; and doesn't mention your particular cancel..

Here is a pic of 7 bars interupted, with a total of 13 bars..

Image

I will be interested in seeing what infornation others may have on the cancel..

Cheers Bunge :P

Edit : Thanks Lakatoi 4, I never thought about that

MODERATOR COMMENT

Bunge can you please load the SG image into the post above rather than a web link as the link will disappear at some stage and will be useless for this very interesting subject.
Thanks :D

Lundy, yes

Round Hill is is rated XXX by Overton, and I think it's rarer than that. Yours is the first copy I've seen -- I don't have one myself. It's known used 1884 to 1902, so if yours has a readable date, it is a candidate for earliest known.

The Pinery is scarce but not rare. Known used 1884 to 1921.

Hi board,

a question about this "Teetulpa" SC: Overton gives a range of usage from 1892-1901. My stamp seems to be postmarked 1889. Is there newer data available?

Image

Similar problem with "Nelshaby". Looks like (18)84 to me (Overton 1886-1898)?

Thanks Bunge, Greg and Neville,

The date for the Round Hill is June or July 1884.

Really appreciate your help,

Hi tilloston, I am no expert but I will give you what is in Overton's book "A Catalogue of Squared Circle Postmarks of South Australia"

Ship Mail Room Adelaide (Located in GPO)
Rated X
Range of Usage - 1889-1890
Diameter of Circle in mm - 24
No Time Markings are recorded

If you do have Overton's book, look up Adelaide..

Earliest Recorded Date (as far as I know) is July 3 83. That one is just two days later.

I see it's listed for $1 on eBay (just search for "ship mail room"). Good buy anywhere near the opening price.

Surely not at $57.70.......great for the seller and obviously badly wanted by the purchaser.......have paid way over the odds for items at times also because I wanted them........I guess there is never a true value for anything.

I also kept my eyes on it and couldn't believe that it went for that amount.. I am familiar with the highest bidders "signature" though..

He has outbid me many times on SA cancels in general..

I picked this one up for the post mark. I'm a sucker for them.

Being a late use, I suspect it is not particularly scarce.

Curramulka. South Australia Squared Circle. 1923.

Curramulka PO c.-/8/1877; CMA 29/10/1993.

Sorry, I shouldn't have mentioned that it was for sale.

You won't have trouble finding another. I see them for sale, cheaply, several times a year. I think that one went so high because someone thinks it is the ERD (presumably not knowing that I have an earlier one in my collection, although I haven't exactly made a secret of that fact).

Now I've been outbid on the Jubilee Exhibition one!!! Obviously someone out there has a LOT more money than I do - it sold for $124.36!!! At least I got the NINNES one which is some consolation.

Keep on smiling all

The Jubilee Exhibition one was a bargain at $124 -- I think it's only the second recorded time code 4, and is a beautiful clear strike. You outbid me on the Ninnes one, which is a new earliest recorded date (I was the underbidder). And I'm pleased that I got the Ramco, which is almost 10 years before the previous earliest recorded date.

By the way, I'm keeping images of good squared circles I spot on eBay in a board on Pinterest:

http://pinterest.com/gregioannou/south- ... e-cancels/

Most of these are in my collection now. :D

(I've taken to pinning them once the auction closes. I'd been doing them as I spot them, then realized the folly of that.)

Hi Greg

Always good to learn so much from you guys.

Firstly how does one get a list of ERD &LRD to check against? I keep living in the hope that Neville's book will come out eventually!!!

Secondly I am obviously dumb but I can't work out how the Pinterest works!! I joined ok but adding pics seems to be beyond my technical ability!!!

cheers

Tony

Index 4 is news to me. Thanks. In exchange, here's a new ERD for you.

Lundy:

Port Pirie type 5 x 2. Very common.

Oolarie Index 1. Overton rates it XX but I think it is a lot easier to find than that. Yours is right in the middle of the usage period.

Registered Adelaide Type 2 index 4. The commonest of the 35 subtypes of this cancel. Sorry!

Petersburg Type 2 indexes 2 and 3. Again, the commonest subtypes of this common cancel. Sorry x 2.

Kapunda Type 2 index 2. Overton rates it as scarce.

Moonta Type 2 index 3. Another very common one.

Cockburn Type 2 index 1. Another common one, but this is the earliest strike I've seen of this index number.

Goodwood Type 1 with no index. Your best one so far. Overton rates it X, and it is really hard to find without an index #.

Hog Bay. Overton rated this one as XX but it is really easy to find.

Greenock Type 1 index 2. Common.

Mannahill Type 1. Common. If that's Index 2, it is hard to find. And if that's Index 3, the index # is rare -- only one copy previously reported.

For everyone: if you're posting a lot of these for comment, could you please list them in alphabetical order?

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg,

Thank you very much for your help with these and apologies for not listing them alphabetically.

Great to know I have a couple of scarcer ones, I will have to keep my eye out for an Overton now I am picking up a few.

I have also been sorting my non squared circle South Australia postmarks, is there a thread on these yet??

Thanks and will see if I have a couple more to ask about

Hi all,

Blew up the index on the Mannahill, still cannot make out if it is index code 2 or 3?

Any thoughts welcome

When in doubt, I always assume it is the common one. So I'd say it's a 2 until someone can prove otherwise.

Hi all

Just picked up this NINNES - according to Overton ERD is 1889 but this one is JU 1887 so may be ERD though only Greg Or Neville are likely to know for sure
