The Opening Ceremonies are always one of the highlights of the Games I think. The Closing Ceremonies I often miss, they just aren't the same spectacle, maybe everyone is too tired.

I liked almost all the events when the participants were amateurs. Now the professionals are involved, it no longer as appealing.

I live in London so I'm well placed to attend and have tickets for five sessions -- somehow ... the Ticketmaster ticket ordering arrangements were an enormous frustration and a massive demonstration of ineptitude!

As mentioned, a number of Olympic stamps have already been issued.

Here are the issues from Isle of Man designed by the fashion designer, Sir Paul Smith.

Canada has a booklet of Olympic stamps coming......

Image

Booklet contains 10 PERMANENTâ„¢ self-adhesive stamps, which are always valued at the current domestic rate.
Issue date: June 27, 2012

About the stamp

Our London 2012 stamp focuses on the sport of rowing, which became an Olympic event when Paris hosted the Games in 1900.
The stamp features a double scull boat, gliding over a sheet of water. (Just in case you're still brushing up on your rowing terminology, scull means to row with 2 oars, 1 in each hand).
Metallic ink was used to enhance the ripples in the water so it seems to move as light plays across the surface of the stamp.
The bow of the boat appears to be pushing out over the blue edge, making it look like they're rowing across the finish line.
Canada's iconic red Maple Leaf appears underneath the boat. The Maple Leaf always evokes national pride and has been included in Olympic team uniforms since 1912.

i don't think Malaysia will be issuing any Olympic 2012 stamps.
However, I love Olympics Opening Ceremonies and some of my favourite events are 10m diving and 100m sprint.

Can't wait for the Olympics to begin !

Those IOM stamps look rather elegant. Recently bought all the GB 'Queens Diamond Jubilee' defins and commemorative sheets etc. Haven't bought any new stamps like that since the 80's.

We like to watch the Olympics (summer and winter). Now that we have DVR we won't have to stay up at 3am to watch live events, and can fast forward past the horrible, made for drama clips the networks like to force on us to fill in their programming.

"The US Postal Service apparently will not be issuing a previously announced series of stamps to coincide with the 2012 London Olympics. Linns Stamp News reports that the block of four stamps depicting Olympic sports that had been shown to journalists last summer has been removed from the 2012 stamp program."

All because they can't agree on use of the Olympic rings logo.
It's all about the "Benjamins".*

Too bad for us. I think Olympic stamp issues are some of the best looking stamps for many countries, and can form a very good looking thematic collection.

Best to all,
pat

Unfortunately for us on the other side of the world the daytime events occur when we are asleep :(

Still I'll be watching on to whatever I can, whenever I can (in between Stampboards and other stamp/cover related business).

The cycling road race is one that really will be intense and our Tour De France winner Cadel Evans is in it with a great chance.

8) GO CADEL 8)

Iceland issued this postage stamp on 26 January 2012 to mark the 100th Anniversary of National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland.

Image

Another stamp has been released specifically for the 2012 games. If anyone has a decent image they might like to show it.

I will applaud the decision by Athletics Australia, at the urgeing of AOC and many others, to allow Genevieve LaCaze to compete at the Olympics.
Whether she wins or not, is irrelevant.
She ran an "A" standard time, withing the period of the time set by the rules of the IOOF, and for local officials to introduce a system where times outside their local arrangements did not count, is administation rules for their own ego, not for the benefit of the organisation they are to run.
Yes, set rules for all to understand, but allow extensions/apeals etc where they are in the communty interests.
Reminds me too much of the Dawn Fraser incident, which cost us a Gold Medal, as did Jon Konrads not being allowed to swim his times in America.
Catch the plane girl.

Like others on the opposite side of the world the recorder will be working overtime.

My favourite sports are tennis and cycling.

Hope the weather will be fair to everyone, contestants and the crowds.

I love watching all the Olympics. Right from the opening ceremony through to the closing ceremony!

I sometimes miss bits because of work...or sleep :( But I can generally catch up, with the repeats that are on all the time....actually, if they got rid of some of the repeats, we'd have a lot more footage of the sports.

Go Aussies!

I'm sure everyone has seen enough Hollywood movies involving gangsters, briefcases of bribe money, etc. to know that the $100 bill features Benjamin Franklin. (When the Euro was rolled out, and it was seen there would be a 500 value, everyone was jumping on that saying "drugs and arms dealers will start using that instead of the USA $100 as it will cut the bulk of paper they have to carry")

Wolfgang wrote:

So modest. 8) Its an interesting stamp to boot.

HK is going whole-hog for the Games, with a set and M/S of I think the 'standard' 4 stamps. Never mind that the first time (and only?) HK won a gold medal was 1996, for women's windsurfing.

I wonder how many stamps the (probably zero-ever-medal-earning) wallpaper countries like Guyana and Tuvalu are going to grace us with, courtesy of their Faustian arrangements with agents.

Going to be tougher this time as not too many obvious golds right now.

I think 15 or 16 will be good going. 8)

Australia may be lucky to get 10. Which would still be pretty good.

Bring back tiddly winks and I might get a gold!

My favourite sport is soccer (football) but at the Olympics it is an under 23 competition which is ridiculous. This does not apply to any other sport, nor to the women's event.

I will ponder on the remaining favourites but you may assume that synchronised sinking will not feature.

India's hopes of winning a gold rests with Saina Nehwal, our Badminton champ.

She has recently won the Indonesian open defeating China's Li Xuerui who's world number 3.

I remember the incident with the doves at the Seoul Olympics...Korean BBQ.

In Pakistan, we mainly wait for the performance of Pakistani players, which is not much.
Some of the sports that have brought medals to Pakistan are Hockey, Boxing, Rowing and ...... :(
........ I think that's all ;)

Olympics Hockey is much awaited among Pakistani audience!

Next Saturday (23 June), the Olympic Flame comes through our town - at 6:20am - and my wife is a member of the Lytham Community Choir which will be singing to welcome it.

I might even wear my Stampboards T-shirt for the occasion

I was under the impression that runners with the Olympic torch were given their torch, once they had completed their half mile, or whatever.

I was wrong!

I've just been told that they are charged £200.

She has recently won the Indonesian open defeating China's Li Xuerui who's world number 3.

What about wrestling - wasn't that always India's big thing?

Athletics is not my thing but I will select the 400m men's sprint as the best event.

That is heavily influenced by the run of Michael Johnson in Atlanta in 1996. His style is unique and it gave him an effortless win on that occasion. The track belonged to him. It is the only running event I can picture in my mind.

He still holds the world record for the 400m.

I believe the first USA stamp issued regarding the Olympics
was for the 1932 winter games. Scott # 716 issued 1/25/32.
It depicts a ski jumper at Lake Placid, New York.
