I look forward to seeing if anyone from New Zealand can get a medal.

I preferred it when other countries used to boycott the Olympics as it gave NZ competitors a better chance of getting to the podium :)

Ah the good old days

Send a petition and have them bring back synchronised sheep dipping.

That is heavily influenced by the run of Michael Johnson in Atlanta in 1996. His style is unique and it gave him an effortless win on that occasion. The track belonged to him. It is the only running event I can picture in my mind.

He still holds the world record for the 400m.

He's also nowadays of course a top athletics commentator - and the only decent one the BBC have

I can't seem to sort out whether the Olympics events should be traditional or fluid.............they delete and add events so often now that it is a bit of a surprise every time I turn on the TV to watch the days events.

All the new events have their fans, but do many of the new "sports" really have worldwide Olympic appeal? :?:

For instance....Golf............I know it is one of the most popular sports in the world. I also understand that it was an Olympic event in early 1900's. But they must have had good reason to remove it back in 1904. Why is it coming back as an Olympic sport in 2016?

Two of my friends from my church, the Salvation Army here in Maryborough are heading to London as part of a mission team for the Olympics and have to say I am quite envious of them! Sure they will have an amazing time.

I'll take the sinister conspiracy-theory route and suggest maybe Titleist or another big brand offered up millions of $ in sponsorship money to the IOC. Seems too often that thats what it comes down to for those guys. Look at the bribery scandals that saw Atlanta (and Salt Lake City?) get their Games.

Sports-related: Adidas has decided to drop its planned new shoe model, featuring (plastic) manacles, after negative social-media attention. Apparently nowhere along the design stage did connatations of slavery occur to anyone.

Of course, it was only after getting bad PR that they dropped the production plan, so its a draw in terms of boosting one's faith in society. :?

Ah, the Olympic Games.

Faster, higher, stronger.
Or is it slower, lower, weaker?
Or corruption, nepotism, doping?

It doesn't matter the show must be played.

I will be cheering for van Koeverden, he is probably Canada's best bet for a podium finish.

Some of the events that I will try to watch are fencing, archery, pole vault, and the high jump.

I do recall that at some point in time, Contract Bridge was nominated as a possible future Olympic Sport. (And possibly Texan No Limit Hold 'em - but that is probably just a nightmare). Contract Bridge could, of course, replace synchrinised swimming, or those gymnastic events where they have coloured balls and hoops flying everywhere.

At the Melbourne 1956 Olympics Aussie Rules was the demo. sport. And at the Commonwealth games in Kuala Lumpor ten Pin Bowling was one of the events.

Bring on the three legged race I say! Or Monopoly.

New Zealand has a very good chance of a gold medal in the women's shot put - Valerie Adams. Also expect some medals from the rowing squad and maybe the cyclists can leave the West Islanders behind in at least one of their races!!!

It's all about the "Benjamins".*

* (US slang for money)

I'm sure everyone has seen enough Hollywood movies involving gangsters, briefcases of bribe money, etc. to know that the $100 bill features Benjamin Franklin.

I just wanted to make sure that "everyone" was up to speed on the latest lexicon. Also, according to YouTube (it's "gangstas') ref: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFK6H_CcuX8 or at least since 1995

I didn't want that one out of contact person to wonder why I was blaming Mr. & Mrs. Benjamin for the problem.

(When the Euro was rolled out, and it was seen there would be a 500 value, everyone was jumping on that saying "drugs and arms dealers will start using that instead of the USA $100 as it will cut the bulk of paper they have to carry")

And yet it never seemed to catch on. Maybe the Euro was harder to roll into a small tube for doing lines. :D

aethelwulf: Please all in good fun. I still think the Olympics are the greatest spectacle we have going. I wish we could have it every year.

This is the Olympic Ideal:
The Olympic Ideal is the premise that individuals, not countries, compete against each other in sport and through these these competitions held every 4 years for both summer and winter Olympics, peaceful competition without the burden of politics, religion, or racism.

And I wish it were just that,

Best to all,
pat

That would be nice Pat.

That ideal is partly achieved because we still thrill at the skill of the Chinese table tennis player, the Chilean weight lifter and the Canadian kayaker.

It is hard, however, to forget the events of Munich, to cast aside the images of drug-enhanced East German athletes and so easy to remember when the Olympics was almost the NATO v Warsaw Pact games.

Hopefully we live in better times now. I will enjoy the skills of those from other countries but you can bet your bottom dollar I will cheer loudest for the Aussies with the Kiwis not far behind.

May the television gods smile on us so we get some good events at reasonable times in our part of the world.

Ironic in a way, that the Greeks laid down the rule that all wars would be put on hiatus while the Games were held, and then they have a "war" event in the Games.

In SB's shadow-IOC, I second Norm's motion to replace rythmic gymnastics with Bridge...or tiddlywinks, or Monopoly. Something with some strategy involved, instead of a woman turning herself into a pretzel while rolling a ball around or doing Flashdance with a ribbon.

How about snooker? It's already part of the Asian Games. :)

Or rock-paper-scissors, so that ANYONE could stand a chance of being Olympic champion.

As a host country for the Winter Olympics, Canada did very well.

Hopefully, they will do just as well in the 2012 Summner games.
Good luck to all the athletes from all over the world

Olympic rings land at Heathrow

A set of giant Olympic rings are set up at London's Heathrow Airport to welcome visitors and athletes as London 2012 approaches.

I'll be watching. CBC usually has very good coverage (pretty much 20 hours a day), although the trend seems to be to show less and less sports. Kind of like US TV Coverage.

The last few Olympics they've had 8 hours of coverage that is mainly live sports, then a "prime time" version that is tape delayed rebroadcasts and those annoying vignettes. I'll just DVR the live stuff and watch it in prime time. :)

The Olympic Torch passed through the Land of the Nogs (Dumfries) today, before heading back south to Carlisle. It's been interesting to follow its travels around the UK.

According to certain elements of the UK media, we should win almost all the gold medals at the games apart from wrestling. If we forget about the ones the other nations win, this is probably about right!

So proud that a young guy I know, Matthew Dellavedova, from my home town of Maryborough, Victoria, has been selected to represent the Australian Men's Basketball team (the Boomers) at the London Olympics...at 21 he is the youngest member of the team!

Well, India has surprisingly not yet come out with any stamp on 2012 London Olympics!!
I have written to the Secretary, Department of Post, Govt of India about this. Although the letter is sent about four days ago, I hope to get a reply by 10 July.

Well, I have great hopes from Abhinav Bindra in Shooting (he won a Gold in Beijing 2008 Olympics!) and from Virdhawal Khade in Swimming.
I do hope from others as well. I expect India to win at least 2 Gold medals this time. :)

The London Olympics opening ceremony on July 27 will have an Indian connection.

An old Tamil film song composed by Chennai-based musical maestro Ilaiyaraaja is part of the playlist for the gala that is being directed by acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle of Slumdog Millionaire fame.

She has recently won the Indonesian open defeating China's Li Xuerui who's world number 3.

What about wrestling - wasn't that always India's big thing?

yes, I hope we'll bag a silver at least in Wrestling. Our wrestlers did well at the Commonwealth and I expect a silver at least on 2012 London Olympics! :)

A story in Friday's English-language daily here (South China Morning Post) said that HK is sending 41 athletes to the Games, a record for the territory.

(Also a record is the fact that I actually read the sports page!)

Not bad for a place with a population of 6 million, and young people who devote all their time to studying (by choice or because their parents force it on them) or Facebook.

India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete (Norman Pritchard) winning two medals in athletics. India is scheduled to take part in the 2012 Summer Olympics to be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012. The Indian government plans to spend over Rs. 2500 million in preparing for the games, including around Rs. 200 million on foreign coaches for various events. Ajit Pal Singh has been named the chef de mission of the Indian contingent by the IOA.

I get quite emotional and overwhelmed when an Indian wins a medal and the tune of Jana Gana Mana (our national anthem) is played.
Then I stand in attention!!

Rs. 2500 million ~ 43.76 millions US$ ~ 43.54 million AU$
Rs. 200 million ~ 3.50 millions US$ ~ 3.48 million AU$
TODAY EXCHANGE RATES. Rs. means Indian Rupees ...
however, large amounts for a great country and people
certainly few of us didn't know how much money can buy with "Rs. 2500 million" !
