Well, they have Kreuzer on them so I thought they might be Austrian but I couldn't find them on any lists of early Austrian stamps. My knowledge of the political entities of Europe at that time are shaky to say the least; so which other countries used the Kreuzer or *are* they in fact Austrian?

German state of Thurn und Taxis. Somewhere between 1859 and 1866.

I'm not too god on these, someone will no doubt be along who will narrow it down a bit further for you.

Are they imperf or rouletted?

That's a great start, thanks!
(edited to say) I'd say imperf (but with a hefty caveat due to being a stamp newbie...)

Nice cover. Assuming they are genuine, they are Thurn and Taxis, Southern District. The 1kr is Scott #47, valued $70US on a cover ($225 for single franking). The 9kr is Scott#55, valued $190US on a cover.

[Nitpick]

To be a bit technical, Thurn and Taxis wasn't a country. It
was a business that provided postal service to a number of
mostly smaller German states.

[/Nitpick]

The T&T stamps come in two currencies - Groschen for
states in northern Germany and Kreuzer for states in
southern Germany.

All stamps come either imperforate or with colorless or
colored roulette.

Divine intervention does help at times.

Thanks for all the help.

As for them being genuine, are there any particular ways of telling?
If the cover as a whole gives a clue to this I did upload an image of the whole thing into the 'practice posting a picture thread'. Lots of nice marks and scribbles on it!

(viewtopic.php?f=18&t=284&start=1500)

All the best

It looks pretty genuine to me.

All stamps "tied" by postmarks, and the general "look and feel" is right - the script, the colour of ink and paper, the postal markings etc....

I bet it even smells 150 years old

It does!

Here's a detail from the reverse which sets the date of the letter (I didn't want to assume that it would set the date of the stamps....)

Thanks for all the help. Going to think about starting a topic someplace here to show scans of other covers and parts of the collection (and more questions, questions...). Just need to work out where best to put them.

I'm not too bad if I have the stamp in front me, I have quite a few of these, but the colour differences are quite subtle, difficult to differentiate on a scan.
