Your unidentified bird is in the Finch family...but which one it is I don't know.....yet.

Beautiful photos as usual and well done MargoZ for that identification.

For the sake of accuracy, Jeremy, the other bird's botanical name is Chrysominla strigula.

Neither of these birds have yet to appear on postage stamps. Only about 10,000 to go :D

Thanks Kevin. Yes, Margot did very well. I have a copy of the "A Photographic Guide to Birds of Thailand" by Michael Webster and Chew Yen Fook and it wasn't in there!

Impressive pictures. The only time I've been so close to an emu was when he was nicking my potato chips (and I wasn't arguing!).

As usual I am astounded at the quality ... hmmm

The colour had me confused, particularly the blue eyes. There are only two species of Rhea, the Greater Rhea and the Lesser Rhea (also called Darwins Rhea) and they both have grey/brown plumage.

I have finally concluded that what the zoo has is a bird with Leucism. I will leave others to check it further but it is a condition where reduced pigmentation results in white feathers and blue eyes. Which species this one is I will also leave to others.

This photo comes from the ABC News website. Way back in the 1970s, when I was just getting interested in birds, I saw many hundreds of woodswallows at Carnarvon in Western Australia. They were packed together on overhead wires in the main street and I could not believe how many could fit into a small space.

This photo was taken in South Australia and is of the White-breasted Woodswallow (Artamus leucorynchus):

Jeremy, I have enough grey hairs without you giving me more

Image

We can eliminate three of the flamingo species because of beak or leg colourings and we are then left with the Greater, Lesser and American. There are many websites, some of them quite frivolous, but I have yet to find a site which provides detailed descriptions accompanied by pictures.

One of the problems is that the plumage of Flamingos, unlike other birds, is coloured according to the food they consume and this can cause great variations. I have seen photos of American, also called Caribbean, Flamingos where the plumage is either white, pink or orange.

Transfer this scenario to a zoo and you will find that the colour of the birds can be deliberately changed by providing different food.

Would I be right in thinking that the last image is of juvenile birds? I cannot be sure of this because I have yet to find a site which compares adult plumage with that of young birds but I think the leg colour is not that of an adult.

I would not be putting a species name on your photos without confirmation but I am inclined to think those birds are the Greater Flamingo.

Just to lighten the atmosphere a little ...

I used Google to try and find how to compare different Flamingos. What I wanted to do was to differentiate between the species but Google concentrated on the difference between genders. The fact is there is no notable variation except a minor difference in size.

And then I noticed a zoo site which stated that it is easy to tell apart the male and female flamingos .....

wait for it .....

the males are all banded on the right leg and the females on the left leg

Kevin, your knowledge of birds is extraordinary! I had no idea their colour was dependant on their food source. Many years a go I saw a lake full of flamingos in northern South Africa and I am pretty sure from memory that they were pink. It was the most incredible sight, there must have been thousands of them

My knowledge of birds is elementary but I do enjoy it.

This photo might bring back memories:

Image

As you can see the photo is by Mark A Chappell and the site states:

Lake Nakuru is a saline lake in the Rift Valley of east Africa, and is famous for its huge flocks of lesser flamingos, pelicans, cormorants, and many other birds. This picture shows African white pelicans, lesser flamingos, and a marabou stork (at left) gathered around the mouth of a freshwater stream, where they congregate to drink and bathe.

From the masses to the few, and I was lucky enough to get these with a point+click Sony 6MP. They are a mixture of black-headed and 'ordinary' gulls (I have trouble with the ordinary ones, they aren't great-black-backed, and are probably herring).

10 points for anybody who recognises the (UK) location

Birds in Harrison Park in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. After the stamp show in Kincardine, my wife and I went to visit the in-laws.

Sorry I couldn't always get a photo of the colourful male of these pheasants. Some of them were in their pens and not in the outdoor area. Also, it was impossible to avoid getting the caging in the photos. The park is in the woods, really, so I guess the tough caging is for the birds' protection.
