Eric,

I figure I have about a quarter of the stamps in my catalog, so about 2,000.
I don't count them, just accumulate them.

That is about the size of my Philippines collection, so I know it is definitely a lot of stamps that take up a lot of space! :D

In a word, no.
Essentially the south island is devoid of volcanoes.
It consists of greywacke and argillite - hardened sandstone and mud.
The pointy shape results from glacial action.

Iomoon,

Based on your observation,
which places are the most active in terms of volcanic activity
(no. of volcanoes, intensity of eruptions, whatever criteria you use)
in some kind of ranking?

Malaysia seems to be just out of the volcanic ring
(if I got that right) and I'm wondering in particular,
where SEA would rank in terms of the above question.

Thanks

Cheers
Andrew

Andrew,

Difficult question to answer.
A single catastrophic eruption could equal the small eruptions of the last 500 years.

Hawaii has been erupting for over 25 years, but apart from the idiots that built houses in the paths of potential lava flows their destructive capabilities have been relatively ineffective.

Conversely, volcanoes at subduction zones are notoriously unpredictable. Personally, If I lived on a volcano in a subduction zone, such as Indonesia, I'd move somewhere else.

Iomoon,

Thanks for the response.

Thank God I don't live in such areas.

Cheers

Hi Iomoon,

I have a question - Are these hot-spots the sites all over the world that are showing volcanic activity or are they only those sites that are monitored by the US?

I lived in NZ for a long time and there were so many earthquakes e.t.c that I'm surprised to see that, according to these lists, there has been no action all year?

Maybe this is because NZ does not have many monitoring stations?

Cheers,

Ewen

For the most part the volcanoes are not monitored by the US but rather by residents in the respective countries. The Smithsonian/USGS acts as a clearing house for the info.

Earthquakes are also recorded but not reported to me or by me.

Iomoon

Glen and I are off to Colorado and then Kilauea in the beginning of November and staying near the volcano (and hopefully not IN it).

I note that you list it in every post so assume we are guaranteed of lots of lava??

I nearly fell into Versuvius years ago- any useful advice for Kilauea?

Cheers
Margo

Margo,

Kilauea has been in eruption continuously since 1983, so I reckon the chances are pretty good.

However, the source area for the rift eruption is a long way from the nearest road and difficult to get to - the only fatality caused by the eruption was someone gored to death by a wild boar while trying to get to the eruption site. Most of the flow is in tubes, except when they get to the ocean, where the interaction between the water and lava is somewhat explosive, so the park people keep tourists away from it. Plus there is a danger of the lava delta collapsing into the sea.

Within the last few weeks there has also been an explosive eruption at Halemaumau (the summit crater) which led the park service to close the rim road. And to the cancellation of bookings at the Volcano House. If you are staying in either Hilo or Kona, you should be pretty safe. The best way to see what it going on is to take a helicopter ride. Expensive, but worth it if you have never seen an erupting volcano before.

An old acquaintance of mine, Don Swanson, used to be scientist-in-charge of the volcano observatory. He's stepped down from that position but he is still at the observatory.

Thanks for the update...Glen stayed at Volcano House some years ago and intended staying there again.

Had a look online and there seems to be a fair bit of accomodation about -any recommendations ?

Cheers

The only problem with staying at Volcano House is that apart from the volcano, that's all there is. If you want to do other things, like eat out in a variety of restaurants, go swimming, etc, it is best to stay at either Hilo or Kona. Hilo is somewhat less "touristy" but the planes land at Kona. The iron man triathalon is in Kona in October, so you wont have any problems in finding a hotel room.

At Kona I've stayed at the King Kahemameha, in Kona at, I think, the Naniloa. Neither of which are cheap, but I think cheaper than Volcano House and a whole lot better accomodation. In either case you would have to drive to the observatory. But you would have easy access to car and helicopter rentals.

For better advice, you might want to contact Jack Lockwood (you can google his name, he is the only volcanologist on google) or from a stampy perspective Roger Heath, who is malolo on eBay. Both live on the Island. You can tell either that I recommended you.
