Anyone have phonograph record stamps that they are willing to part with? I'd love to have them (trade/buy/whatever) as a curiosity.

I had a few PNG Bird Of Paradise 45 rpm records that Bill Hornadge made decades back in one of his hair brained Stamp News promos!

Not sure now if they were stamps or not but they would have been stamp connected knowing him.

I sold them recently in a job lot to Kevin Morgan another member here. .. drop him a note he may still have a few.

Thank you, those Bhutanese stamps are the ones I was referring to. I guess they've jumped a bit since my friend found them in a nickel approvals book....

Still, if I could get them for US$300, that wouldn't be so bad....

Perhaps you guys could explain the connection between Bhutan and phonographs!
I thought you were referring to the royalty stamps on my inherited 78's.
FYI my stamps seem to range from three-quarters of a penny to one and three quarter pennies in one-eighth increments.
No idea why, but a guess would be the different deals struck between HMV, Decca, etc.

Bhutan issued a set of postage stamps which are actual, playable 78 RPM phonograph records! If kept in good condition, they don't sound half bad, maybe comparable to an old wind-up player. They feature the national anthem, history of the nation, and folk songs. They were always intended mostly for collectors, as far as I can discern.

Had a dig around in the rubble of my 3 story junk yard here and found them in a box with Bill Hornadge note:

"40 x PNG Birds Of Paradise gramophone records. Only 200 ever made. I retailed them for $10 each years ago."

OK, it was a Seven Seas Stamps promo it seems.

2 sides. All un-played and perfect. My *Guess* is 1960s by label art.

Probably a world first knowing Bill's entrepeneurial skills!

Probably sell well on ebay as a novelty lot, especially being "Bird" and PNG connected - with official PNG Bureau endorsement?

$A125 the 40 copies if anyone wants to fiddle with these.

Interesting seems Peckover is a PNG stamp designer too .. and did this one at least:

Two things. One, a quick Google didn't turn up much other than an ornithological website mentions the record in a PDF you can buy for $25 (which I didn't). It's definitely pre-1975

Secondly, what a wonderfully appropriate name, PECKOVER

Something I've never ever seen before -- thanks!

These stamps were stuck to 78's, 45's, and LP's and are called Royalty Stamps. The idea was that everytime tracks from this record were played (by Broadcasting Companies) they were to pay the appropriate Royalty (eg 1d etc)

Royalties are still paid to artists now days (APRA Fees) but we don't see stamps on CD's etc We (one of the largest Broadcasters, Radio and TV, here in New Zealand) source most of our music/video material online now days and Artist fees are normally paid by refering to our "as played" logs.

Bill Peckover was a very important influence in the transition from monochrome to multicolour PNG stamps.

He is highly revered in PNG (refer my article in March '07 Stamp News) for his bird photography, and when we last spoke his widow was alive and well in southern Brisbane.

Lucky he was not a shoe designer or he'd be a Walkover ....

Great revenue stamps Roly.

I worked in a large record company here, and thought they were some kind of tax on the sale of LP's! Like cigars and cigarettes and liquor still has to this day in some parts.

Really just meant those Bhutanese ones. Learned a lot from those tax/royalty/whatever stamps.

I have the set, and have played them on an old battery opeated gramophone. I also have a promo sheet released by the Bhutan Government (or their agents the Bhutan Stamp Agency in the Bahamas) that announced the set. I will scan it tomorrow an post the 2 pages here.

BTW the records play at 33rpm.

The only other similar plastic record I have seen was a National Geographic issue with the sound recording of Sir Winston Churchill's funeral service and procession that was provide free with the magazine issued to commerorate his life!

For the 40th Anniversary of Bundespost, Germany issued a large Elbe album full of philatelic doo-dads, including a cover (with ordinary stamps) whose cachet was a playable record. I don't have one but I've seen it.

And Argentina issued special stamps for mailing phonograph records on December 11, 1939.

My vision for this board was that in years to come it would be **THE** #1 stamp resource on the world web for ANYTHING remotely to do with stamps.

We can do that as we are able to show PHOTOS.

I urge all members to do as I do where possible .. and that is to record forever the images like the ebay link above.

In 5 years time folks will be able to see they looked like THIS!

Some of the weekly music papers over here used to give these things away in the early 70s. They'd include a track that wasn't available elsewhere, and you'd get it sellotaped to the front cover. They used to call them "Flexidiscs" over here.

I've got one of these somewhere, with some classic punk on it.

And I remember, in the mid 1980s in the States, the McDonalds burger chain distributed, nationally, disposable plastic phonograph records with some portion of the Big Mac jingle on it. If you received one with the full jingle on it, you could exchange it for a large prize, IIRC.

Nowhere above do I see an issue year for these?

That info sheet seems to say they had a peel off layer to affix to envelopes (Durrhhhh as if any were postally used!) ... so I assume that the grooves are on one side only?

I might write this up in Stamp News .. what are Cat values for this in the different cats?

Look at the top of the second page, you will see April 4, 1973, although Scott says April 15, 1973. The Scott numbers are #152 through #152F (7 stamps). In 2003, the total CV was $101.20 for mint or used.

Michel also says April 15, 1973, numbers #557-563.

If you listened to the record, but didn't use the stamps on an envelope, are they still mint??

Nice question. A vinyl record played once is no longer "mint" for re-sale purposes so, technically, no!

$346 mint or used (both italicized) as follows:

$13, $18, $27.50, $85, $32.50, $70, $100 (respectively, in increasing denominations)

Huge jump in a few years, and eBay would suggest they are still increasing!

The date of 4 April on the leaflet is presumably the date of the "press release".

The paragraph below that says the stamps would be released on 15 April.

Glen, you will find that the earliest Bhutan stamps (say, 1967 to 1978) have had a HUGE run-up in Scott from 2003 to 2008, although virtually no gains from 2007 to 2008, maybe it's over.

Non-philatelic covers virtually impossible to find, of course.

I saw a news piece that Bhutan will issue the world's first CD Rom stamp in 2008 - so maybe order a few of these and tuck them away if you like a gamble.

Something pretty funny.

My 'Stamp News' article on these amazing stamps was read by Bill Hornadge - the founder of Seven Seas Stamps and 'Stamp News' in the 1950s, and the world famous Cinderella publisher.

He contacted me to say he had a couple of sets of these Bhutan stamps absolutely pristine since issue .. never touched and never played!

He had forgotten about them, and stored them for the past 34 years since issue in his oddities folder.

Brilliant condition, and if anyone wants to keep or sell them they can say they have the provenance "ex Bill Hornadge" which he will verify if asked.

I gave him a pretty good (from my side!) price for them ....
and if anyone else needs a set at around HALF the ebay and Scott prices please let me know.
