G'day,

I'm not sure if this will work but if you are reading in this forum, then you probably have some time to kill.

Why don't we post our scans of Australian stamps here, in Stanley Gibbons order starting with SG1 onwards?

Some of us have Australia complete - if you do, please don't just scan whole pages. Try just individual stamps, as this is a time wasting thread, not a "post your whole album" thread.

Maybe we wil end up with Australia, in order, from SG1 right through to today!

I am at 'work' and cannot post any scans but anyone who has SG1 can start the ball rolling.

Cheers,

Ewen

What a great idea Ewen :!:  :!:

If each stamp picture is posted individually it will come up easier in a search too.

Love this idea !!

What a GREAT idea .. if a few folks do this as a project, we have a permanent Australia catalogue that can be updated all the time.

If all members use this format, with good scans, and with complete subject line in each description, and all variants listed in SG, it will be found on google searches very readily. 8)

Folks,

Good idea. It will take some time but what the heck. You should do it as a wicki as we are doing with the decimal rates wicki.

What does "Australia complete" mean?

Stanley Gibbons and other catalogues do NOT publish every Australian stamp issued.

For a complete list of ALL Australian decimal issues, including ALL variations, refer to the Australian Stamp Variations catalogue.

I don't think there was an intention to image all the varieties, just the main SG catalog numbers and listing the SG varieties.

There is NO SG7 or SG18 listed by SG even in the 2006 Catalogue, that why no responses.

Unknown as to why :? , you will have to ask Glen or Stanley Gibbons for the answer to that one, its just the way it has been done from day 1, I think.

SG obviously set aside those numbers for stamps that they thought would be issued or they eventually decided that varieties were not worthy of new numbers.
But, obviously those issues never came to fruition ( at least as far as SG was concerned).
So, does anyone know what they might have been?

Usually catalogers are informed or given examples of an impending issue and reserve a catalog number for it.
However, once a number has been "jumped", it requires a complete reoganization of the catalog to get it in numeric sequence again.
Something which catalog publishers are loathe to do.

SG 7 & SG 18 haven't disappeared, more re-numbered.

In my 1950 Stanley Gibbons British Commonwealth Catalogue, SG 7 is a 4d. kangaroo orange-yellow, value then 22/6 mint, 15/- used.

It appears that this is now SG 6a.

SG 18 was a 1d. pale rose-red sideface. In 1950 it had a value of 2/6 mint, 2/6 used. It looks like this is now SG 17c.

As an Off-topic post.....
Ormond what were the prices in 1950 for the high value Roos, please?

Here are the excerpts for Australia from the 1950 Stanley Gibbons catalogue detailing the prices of the higher value Roos.

Some very interesting comparisons can be made with current prices.

Don't worry about this being too off-topic, as the second column also reveals the identity of SG 46, also missing from today's catalogue. It appears that a bit of re-organising was done at some time, as SG 45 today is the £2 Roo, whereas in 1950 it was a £1 Roo.

The re-organisation by Stanley Gibbons of their Australian listings can perhaps be summarised (and simplified) as follows. In 1950 there were three groupings:
1914-15 (SG 20-27)
1914-21 (SG 29-34)
1916-28 (SG 35-46)

Today these are grouped in the catalogue as follows:
1914-20 (SG 20-23)
1915 (SG 24-30)
1915-28 (SG 35-45)

This has of course resulted in re-numbering of some and the disappearance of SG 31-34 (synonymous with SG 21-23 today)

Gibbons sometimes go and change a LOT of numbers.

Drives dealers mad, but ensures SG sell new catalogues.
