Hi, my question is how do I find the number of a thread. I have not posted on the thread that I nominated for best thread of the month and so have not received a notification when someone else posts. I have tried clicking on the thread but obviosly not in the right place. So how do I find out the number of a thread immediately, without having to wait for someone else to post after I have posted, which can be a log time. Many thanks, RON>

In the "Address" box across the top of the page it is on, you'll see the link.

This thread as you can see is :

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=8406

Or right click on any white space on the page, and left click on "properties"

Use CTRL + C keys to copy the link, and CTRL and V keys to paste it where you need.

Thank you Glen, I thought at this time my answer might come from London or similar timezone, or tomorrow. I am at this moment claiming the title of Complete Utter Techno Baboon of the whole board. I used a computer in the 1990's to do a Psychology degree but Word was the program and I had trouble putting tables into stats essays. I have the thread and will now try to put it in the proper place.
To prove my point I have no address at the top of the page when I am on the board, only on e-mail. I clicked on the white space, got properties, but could not get CTRL + C keys to
copy. Did not get to pasting. I'll try again. Don't bother trying to educate me further on this topic. I copy all problems and when I need my techie to fix something he helps with all old
conundrums, and charges not much,as I have helped him in the past. If anyone on the Stamps forum needs any help with drug problems that is my specialisation. For no charge of course. I am on the board of The Hepatitis C Council of NSW, and was board Member of another prominent state organisation for ten years, from Newbie to President of the board,at a troubled time.

Well I know almost nothing tech wise, but I can assure you unless you are using some super exotic tech geek browner program you WILL have an inch down from top of your page, the url for this (or any other!) page showing - at all times.

And to copy you first need to highlight the text you want to copy with your cursor, and THEN use the CTRL and C keys together.

I bought an LCD widescreen monitor to go with my laptop. Hooked it up OK, but despite all of my (VERY limited) skills, my LCD only shows my wallpaper. No desktop icons, no control bar.

Any help would be appreciated!

Dave,

Assuming you are using XP, here's a link showing how to use Dualview:

Thanks Tony, but that's what I've done. I can still only get my wallpaper and my cursor onto the LCD. Obviously I have dualview, but I'm a confused person.

I thought (from the example I saw in the retailer) that the second screen was a mirror of the first. That's what I've been trying to achieve.

Also, I've only been working in Firefox and can't seem to drag and drop anything, which is a pain, because I want the LCD for internet work.

I opened Adobe and did a drag and drop no problem. Do you know how I can drag and drop a browser window?

Someone else suggested Function F8 to me, but that doesn't seem to do anything

See if this works:

Configuring a second screen

Check the instruction manual for your laptop to find the keyboard command to enable the second monitor; you usually can choose to use the LCD only, the LCD and the external CRT, or just the CRT.

The next step is to instruct Windows how you want to use the second monitor. One screen is assigned as the primary monitor, home to the Logon dialog box when the laptop is first loaded and the default starting point for many software programs.

You're also permitted to select different screen resolutions and color quality settings for each screen, and you can set a logical arrangement of the relation of one screen to the other - one above the other or to one side or the other.

This isn't a minor issue; as you move the mouse off the edges of the primary screen, it arrives on the other screen based on this setting. The icon positions don't have to correspond with the actual position of one screen to another, but only the way in which items and pointers move and drag.

Setting screen positions

Follow these steps to identify and arrange the logical position of the built-in LCD and the external monitor:

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.

3. Click the Settings tab and then click Identify.

This displays a large number on the built-in LCD and on the external monitor, identifying each.

4. Click the monitor icons and drag them to the position you want. Click OK or Apply to view changes.

Choosing the primary monitor

To choose or change the designation of one or another screen as the primary monitor, follow these steps:

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Display icon to show the Display Properties dialog box.

3. Click the Settings tab.

4. Click the numerical icon for the monitor you want designated as the primary monitor.

5. Click the open box to select the Use This Device as the Primary Monitor to place a check mark or remove it.

The check box is available only on the secondary monitor, not the one set as the primary.

Extending a desktop across both monitors

When you choose this setting, you can drag items across your primary screen onto the secondary screen or resize a window to stretch it across more than one monitor. To use this setting, follow these steps:

1. Open the Control Panel.

2. Double-click the Display icon to show the Display Properties dialog box.

3. Click the Settings tab.

4. Click the numerical icon for the monitor you want to use in addition to your primary monitor.

5. Click the check box alongside Extend My Windows Desktop onto This Monitor.

Lakatois answer should fix any problems you are having,

With the FN + F8 ,, those are the standard keys that Dell Laptops use to switch between three different modes when using more than one screen. Each press will do one of the following.

1) Laptop only
2) Laptop and Monitor (Mirror)
3) Monitor only

Other laptops like HP use different keys for the same functions generally a function key/ control key and one of the f keys (some use f5 , some f2).

One other thing you can take a look at , since graphic cards sometimes have their own software to control the dual view you can right click on a blank area on your desktop and select graphic properties -- this should bring up the application. Also when you right click on the desktop look out for anthing that might relate to the graphics card --- Nvidia properties, Intel Graphics etc.

I dont know how anyone can work without at least two monitors these days.... *boast* i currently have quad screens at work....

Hope all comes right :)

I need to load a stamp image from a PDF into photobucket.

Anyone know how to do that?

I think some software like 'grabit' or some name like that helps, but I do not have that loaded!

Copy images

You can copy and paste individual images from a PDF to the clipboard (Windows only), to another application, or to a file using the Select tool.

If you cannot select an image because of overlapping text, choose Edit > Preferences (Windows) or Reader > Preferences (Mac OS), select General on the left, and select the Make Select Tool Select Images Before Text option.

Using the Select tool , do one of the following:
To select the entire image, click it or drag a rectangle around it.

To select a portion of an image, hold the pointer over the image until the crosshairs icon appears, and then drag a rectangle around the portion.

Note: To deselect an image and start over, click outside it.
Copy the image:
Choose Edit > Copy, and then choose Edit > Paste to paste the image in an open document in another application.

Right-click/Control-click the image and choose an option to copy the image to the clipboard or to a new file.

Drag the image into an open document in another application.

Some pdf documents are copyrighted and do not allow you to copy photos. One method I have used in the past is to use a screen capture tool like Fscapture (the older version is freeware - if anyone wants a copy let me know) - it does a better job than using windows print screen as it allows you to select what you want capture.

This may not be in time to assist you in this instance Glen but it may be of help for others or for future use. My apologies if it is verbose.

PDF
When a PDF has been closed so that you are unable to select from the document, I have found that when I "Save a Copy" with a different name I am able to then select from the copy.

SCREEN SHOTS
If you "have" to work with screen captures it is worth increasing the zoom size to highest possible/acceptable resolution. The PDF reader will (should) have a zoom selection on the menu and explorer has one in the bottom right hand corner.
To capture the screen, the print screen (Prt Sc) usually to the right of the function (F#) buttons can be used to place an image on the clipboard. Different machines (systems) work in different ways and some experimentation may be required as to which buttons do what on a given computer. On the machine I am currently working on hitting the Prt Sc button will paste a copy of the entire screen to the clipboard, whereas Alt+Prt Sc will paste a copy of just the application as shown on the screen (even if the window only takes up say half the screen) to the clipboard.

Placing the screenshot in an application such as Word, Notepad or what ever will embed the picture in the document/file without showing the image file extention (eg .jpg) that Photobucket seeks. Thus, it is best to paste (Ctrl+V) the screenshot directly into your photo editor application and (edit then) save the image ready for upload/use.

Picasa allows for direct screen capture ready for editing. Editing will most likely be required as a screenshot will take the full screen or full screen shown for the application one is using; not just the image you wish to capture. Image

WINDOWS PAINT
Should you being working on a machine that either doesn't have your preferred editor or access to the web to allow download of an editor (eg Picasa) or access to an editor (eg Photobucket) all is not lost (you may be working from a disk/file someone has supplied). Since Windows 98; Windows Paint has been supplied with the Windows operating system. While not as slick as Adobe, Photoshop etc it does the trick. (Start>>>All Programs>>>Accessories>>>Paint)
Ctrl+V the picture onto the palette click on the crop icon, outline the area of the picture you wish to retain, select from the menu Image>>>Crop and you have the item you wish. When saving the image you can select the format best suited to your purposes.
One thing to look out for though is that when one crops a picture in Paint, if one uses the Edit menu Cut item rather than the portion required being retained on screen it is taken to the clipboard and requires pasting to a new palette which one then saves. When selecting the new palette a dialogue box will ask if you wish to save changes to untitled ... just hit the don't save button.

APPLICATIONS/TOOLS
There are a number of applications available to "garb" just a portion of a screen and save it as a picture (jpg, bmp etc). Some freeies are:

If you have Vista OS, you have a tool called Snipping Tool
Image
(Start>>>All Programs>>>Accessories>>>Snipping Tool) very easy to use, though formats to save are limited. If you wish to further edit (crop the picture, rotate etc) it is available to immediately use in your preferred editor.

If you have XP you can download the Snipping Tool for XP from http://www.blazingtools.com/downloads.html
Image
it is currently the very bottom selection on the page gained from this link.

If you really need all the bells and whistles a fully functional version of SnagIt is available as a 30 day free trial from http://www.techsmith.com/screen-capture.asp .

Image
This is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista; though one should check the system requirements before downloading.

While i haven't used these sites , McAfee site adviser gives them a green code.

I hope this is of some use.

A question:

Recently, the board appears stretched on my screen, meaning I have to do a lot of right scrolling. I thought maybe it was oversized scans, but that's not the case. Did I somehow change my settings somewhere?
