I learned more in ten minutes on GJ50's Exhibit thread than I've gleaned in 40 years of collecting.

For that reason I nominate GJ50 for his "Putting Together an Exhibit" thread 8)

I'd like to nominate Gavin_ H for his stamper to overcome the texta scribble. The second good idea to come out out Britain since 1840. The first of course being the adhesive stamp.

Like all good librarians, MargoZ likes everything organized and in order. It's a wonder they haven't also been given Dewey numbers.

Just a suggestion - looking through the nominated threads, it's a very strong field! So many deserving threads, it's a pity only one award will be given out.

I think there is an argument for having more than one prize (maybe $100, $50, $25?). On this board, during the course of a month, I'm confident that there will consistently be at least 3 threads deserving of a prize. We could even keep it flexible, and not give out 3 prizes if the judges believe that there are not enough deserving candidates (on past and current form, I'd be surprised if that were the case, but just to ensure that the standards that we have to come to expect from this board are maintained).

Regards,
Vinod

Vinod,

I totally agree with you regarding the quality of ideas stemming from this little competition.

However, there is only one prize currently (donated by Glen) so it's his call if any more are warranted. I'm sure he wouldn't be averse to some generous members donating second and third place prizes for this competition.

Not me - credit where credit is due. :)

Australia Post Philatelic were keen to sponsor this monthly competition when I raised it with them.

And have very generously done so - the prize is worth about $A100 each month - more if the winner resides overseas, as did our last winner. 8)

And here's me bagging that fantastic, donor Australia Post. I should be whipped and flogged within half a centimetre of death with a black texta.

OK the clear winner from the Moderator vote was:

GJ50 "Tutorial - Putting together a competitive Stamp Exhibit"
http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=8543

Congrats to Gary on his win and his prize. Great to see an experienced exhibitor and FIP Judge, offering such practical 'hands-on' advice and visuals for those less knowledgeable, who have questions and queries in this area. :)

And thanks once again to Australia Post Philatelic for their generosity and superb monthly prize. :D

And commiserations to the many others members who were nominated .. some GREAT posts we had to select from!

And now folks, let's remember to add nominations for OCTOBER to this thread as the month winds on. :)

I would like to thank everyone for the award.

I do hope that the thread has many on here considering the move to exhibit, whether at the your local club, local area competition or placing your toe in the water and doing a one-framer for the National Shows.

I have enjoyed putting the thread together and of course will continue to add too it and look forward to more questions.

Ro Ron, thanks for the thread suggestion, sometimes one needs a nudge to put such a thread together.

Since TonyMac continues to post into October (with more to come, it seems), I would like to nominate his Banging Drum Uglies thread for recognition in October:

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=8480

IMHO it deserves to win if only because of the incredible amount of time he has devoted to this thread (and many others) and the information that is jam-packed into it, profusely illustrated with scans.

Well if we can carry over items from one month to the n ext,
I would like to nominate Mr Boggler, for his Grumpy Old Men's thread, 792 posts to date.

I would like to nominate TonyMac for his Banging Drum Uglies for his great effort and generous sharing of his knowledge in these stamps. I believe many members have benefited from this thread and some may have been encouraged to start collecting these stamps. This will also be a great reference point for those intending to go into this area, now and in the future.

I'll second Andrew's motion.

I don't collect these but still follow every update with much interest. If ever I do come across a few, I know where I'll go to reference them!

Plus, Tony's prose is soooooooo easy to read, I think I'd follow this thread even if I were not interested in stamps at all!

Cheers,

Ewen :)

Seconded. To be honest, I feel much more at ease asking questions in this thread than anywhere else. It is informative, funny, interesting and very entertaining. ALL this in one thread.

Thank you MrB. I thoroughly enjoy it. :)

Not knocking any of the present nominees, but if the conditions allow retrospective nominations, then we could go back to say Roly and his Penny Universal thread or Colin and his South Africas or even Bob, and the where is he now.

If you continue to support old threads, then to some extent you do a dis-service to new threads. I think there needs to be some statement for eligibility, for a thread to be nominated, although it can nominated as much as possible in that month.

With many threads on this board, lasting a long time, is it fair to the new threads to keep going back to things that have had their chance ( or in some cases -never had a chance, since the award is only new.)?

Even to the extent that any thread not nominated previously may be nominated in one month only and compete with the other nominations of that month but once that month is up, can't be nominated again for say 12 months. Then if the thread continues for 50 years, it has had its chance.

Waroff,

Tony has added to his thread since the last nomination. I understand what you're saying; would it be better if we nominated a specific recent post from that thread?

Agree with Ewen

The title of this thread is "most helpful tip/post" of the month (regardless of when the thread was started, I assume).
Nominations need to be more specific than a whole thread.

Well, in that case every post including the number crunchers, can be entered. The number crunchers keep this board in the eyes of Google much more than our specific topic beating the drums tutorials.

No single post on this board does anything without it's followers. From the King GeorgeV help please to Grumpy Old Men.

Each of us has our favourites and threads we rarely read.

Some of these threads have an immense viewing audience and number of posters ( which can only help keep this board in the eyes of Stampboarders and lurkers alike.), while others have a few posts and few lurkers.

As for the effort put-in, well I would suggest that Ron has put as much effort into his thread on Grumpy Old Men, as some of the more esoteric tutorials. Not that I haven't followed Roly's Penny Universals with interest and Colin's South Africa Definitives and even the Uglies.

My belief is that the thread should benefit a large number of stampboarders and be of general interest to most. It should involve a number of different posters and a wide viewing audience. It should encourage posters to keep this board high up in the eyes of the Google world, so that it may attract new members.

I suppose if you find one of these posts to be the most helpful thread/post of the month you could vote for one?

I do agree, Bill. I really enjoy following the banter on the GOMC thread. You guys are much appreciated Waroff including Mr B, Philly, Parry and the others.

I would be surprised if the Grumpies weren't nominated as you guys do answer any queries helpfully!

Cheers,

Ewen :)

Maybe Admin can clarify what should/could be nominated, although I thought it was just for whatever we found most helpful?

O.K.

I might have gone off at a 90 degree tangent but a single post by itself, means little. There are exceptions of course, like the one post that suggested the enlargement lens, but it did not gain credence until it was taken up by other boarders. Until they had tried it and found how useful it was, it meant basically nothing.
Like Gavin's marker stamp, a brilliant idea but useless unless it is taken up by the Postal Authorities. BUT, if it was, would add thousands of dollars a year to many stamp accumulations.
That would definitely benefit all stampboarders.

I don't think any single post in any of the tutorials has a world shattering effect, but when you put several posts into a thread, then they do. So in that case are we looking at a post, series of posts or a thread. I know what the title says, but I think it has to be taken as an idea.

In our last two winners, one was a specific post and the other as I believe it, an idea which turned into, not a single post but a thread on exhibiting. Was any single post in that thread as world shattering as the Lens post, but the overall effect of the thread may have greater consequences for many collectors, and encourage them to exhibit, just like the old man in the Mac.

Quite wrong Bill, if you mean the many number counting type threads.

They attract posts, but score ZERO from google as there is nothing in them ... except numbers. :D

There are a BILLION web pages out there full of numbers.

There are NOT a million web pages out there on how to prepare a stamp exhibit. THAT is what google searches and indexes.

And that is what we do best of anyone on earth. And that is probably why it won last month.

Not ONE of the number threads even rates in our top 40 threads in terms of page views.

Number one? By over DOUBLE the nearest contender is:

Here is a new initiative, in our ever growing aim to improve and enhance the fun, educational, and rewarding member experience here at stampboards.com 8)

Around the very end of each month, or early in a new month, the Volunteer Moderator Group will discuss what in their view has been the most interesting or useful or helpful post made for the last month.

It could be anything - something funny that was posted, someone assisting with great detail another member's query, or terrific photos someone has loaded of their Bechuanaland Postage Dues collection - or their FDC's of Fruit Bats etc.

There are about 15 members in the Moderator Group, so a wide range of input will take place, and YOU can assist by adding your own suggestions to this thread.

You MUST add a specific link to the post or the thread concerned, with a reason why you think it deserves to win. Don't say: "Jim's post in mid month on the 1d black was pretty good."

We may select something nominated from this thread, and may often choose something else entirely, but posting your thoughts here first is clearly a good initial step!

Glen Stephens

Seems clear enough, ultimately it's up to the Mod Squad to choose, but anything can be nominated

The reality is this award is only 2 months old, and like all new ideas, it evolves and improves with time. :D

The comments above help fine tune it!

I am adding a few more guidelines based on member comments.

1. Each member may nominate more than one thread or post if they wish.

2. Any member can recommend a thread or post in a month, even if that member (or others) have nominated it in a previous month. And even if it has won in a previous month.

3. ANY thread can be nominated that has had at least 2 posts on it, in the month of nomination - even if the thread is a year old.

4. Members can nominate either an entire thread - OR a very specific post by a member within any thread. You must be Crystal Clear when nominating which one it is - giving date and time of post if the latter. We will not guess or mind read - if you can't bother to make it clear, we will likewise be too lazy to bother to add your nomination to the list. ;)

Thank you very much for those clarification guidelines Glen.

Thank you also for the information on how Google works. It sounds like the more adjectives and nouns you use in a post, the higher it rates. I'll try to remember that in my overused ramblings.

I am also glad to see that threads can be nominated, with a reasonable explanation as to why , you nominated them.

I would also like to see some mechanism available for the nomination of the "pleasure threads" as well as the studious tutorial type threads.

I would hate to see the serious threads winning month after month and the pleasure threads being ignored. In my opinion it is the mix of pleasure and learning that have made this board so great.

It is great to see so many of the experts venturing into the pleasure threads and the newbies posting in the serious threads. There is something for everyone and you can pick and choose what you will do today.

Enough rambling, off to look at some threads for nomination.

Here's the mechanism:

1. Take at least 2 fingers, and one keyboard.

2. Used the aforesaid, to tap on the latter

3. Press "SUBMIT".

I would like to nominate Roly's THREAD. N.Z. 1901-1909 "Penny Universal" detailed Tutorial as a THREAD.

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=2368
This thread had stood the test of time, with the first post being,"Posted: Thu May 10, 2007 9:12 pm Post subject: N.Z. 1901-1909 "Penny Universal" detailed Tutorial and still going strong today.

I think this thread has done more to promote the study of New Zealand stamps than probably most exhibitions where the Penny Universal has been exhibited. It has got more people interested in the study of NZ stamps and this issue in particular. It was a ground breaker and an idea which has been used successfully by others.

It has involved people around the globe in looking , posting and understanding this issue.

The knowledge and detailed illustration of the fine details of this issue is astounding.

It has helped make stampboards what it is today and continues to attract new members to the intrigues of the issue.

A reminder to ALL members of this wording on post one - you MUST add a link - it can take Margo an hour to round them all up otherwise to collate them:

================

So - what we need is in all cases:

A thread link url, and the member (singular) nominated within that thread, if not the thread starter.

All to be posted below on THIS thread. You can nominate more than 1 thread, and more than 1 member if you so choose.

I nominate Arthur Bain for his thread "Meaning of MUH":

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=8995

With the 6 words: "Please tell me what MUH means." Arthur has started a most interesting and wide-ranging debate. This is a fundamental, not to mention controversial, question for many collectors of all levels, as can be seen from the responses so far

I nominate Tallanent for

GB 1937 Coronation Commemorative Labels - a study

Great to see such an informative 'tutorial' on the Cinderella forum

I second, MargoZ's nomination for

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=904.

I think that this is so, interesting, even though I don't collect Cinderellas. The depths that people will search to, to find an answer, to solve a problem or to prove others incorrect.

This is a nomination for the thread and Tallanent.

If it is an ongoing thread started earlier, I would like to nominate FromDownUnder (Norm) for his thread in the swap section for the chain letter. Look at how much response this has and still continues to get.

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=5367

Great idea Norm. Members old and new are intrigued. Thumbs up.

My nomination for thread of the month is Tallanent's excellent handling of his labels.

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=9048

It is good to see a kindred spirit around :) I think he is just as passionate about his labels as i am about the Penny Universals !!

Great stuff and a thread which really does add value to Stampboards.com

Cheers

Roly
