I am sure that most collectors have at least one item of re-directed mail or and envelope or the like that has been re-used - and thought it would be nice for some of these to be recorded for reference.

I will start things off with a postcard from Canada redirected a number of times and ending up back in Canada some time later. The details I have for the item are as follows ...

Canada - 2 December 1904
Australia - 4 January 1905
Hong Kong - 2 February 1905
Egypt - Suez - 28 February 1905
Egypt - Cario - 2 March 1905
Malta - 9 March 1905
England - 14 March 1905
Canada - 25 March 1905

A total of 113 days in transit

Wow,

That is impressive, and over one hundred years old too! Where was the cover originally addressed to?

113 days must be close to a record!

Originally addressed to the Bank of Australia, Melbourne - address middle left on the front (top picture).

Would be nice to see if any other re-directed covers were longer in transit ..

First one according to the list is Bank of Australia Melbourne and they relied on the receiving clerk to take care of the rest, getting postage, readdressing it and getting the bank stamp on the back. Interesting they used a Queensland stamp instead of a Victorian one.

It could just about have a record number of Bank backstamps on it as well!

To cover the other part of the thread title - Re-use I would like to show what I believe is the only example of such use known.

With the issue of the King Edward 8 stamps on the 1 September 1936 a vast number of first day covers were produced by collectors. In Paignton, this caused a problem as reported in the press and the clipping is shown below ..

Image

The result of this is that no first day postmarks are known from this location. However one clever collector decided to place a label over the top of the stamps on the cover and get it posted the following day (2 September) and thus proving that the date below was an error. The label was applied in such a way as to allow it to be lifted to show the 'error' of date below. The scans of this are shown below.

Image

Image

I would like to know if any of the collectors or dealers here have seen any other examples of this use and if possible a scan of the item. Would be nice if this is the only one - but just as nice if there are only a few known and to have them recorded.

Allan,

Really enjoyed looking at those redirected covers/cards. They do tell a story and if the contents were intact, I can only imagine what more they could have said.

Cheers
Andrew

Allan,

There's another thread on the Board entitled "Busy Covers" or something like that, which has some more examples of this sort of thing.

If you're interested in seeing them, why not try using the Search facility

Gavin

Thanks for the heads up on that. I had done a seach for redirected but found nothing that fitted with the items I wanted to show - hence the new thread.

The other thread is at http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.ph ... sc&start=0 and

I will move the first one to that thread and maybe leave this for Re-use items if anyone want to post them

Allan,

Glad you found it :!:

I think that's a good idea to leave this thread for Re-Use items, as "Busy Covers" covers a multitude of sins 8)

I'm sure other members can add to this one...

I just found this old thread and I have a couple of comments on the Malta stamp on this cover:

It is not the original stamp - there was another stamp in its place (probably a 5d Maltese Galley which was horizontal since the real cancel stops a few millimeters from the edge of the stamp) but it was removed and later replaced with this KEVII 1d. The Valletta cancel is clearly drawn by hand - the real one is the cancel at the top which is inverted.

Edit: The Queensland stamp also has a hand drawn cancel.

The card in question is a "Round-The-World" post card which was prohibited by the Canadian post office. I don't have the date of prohibition, but here is the regulation from the 1944-45 postal guide:

324. "Round-the World" letters or other articles sent with the obvious intention of obtaining cancellation marks or of rendering them objects of curiosity or interest are prohibited. Such articles are to be sent to the General Superintendent of Postal Service (For Inspection Division) Ottawa.
Letters and other articles prepared in such a way as to receive successive addresses are not admitted.

Are posters in other jurisdictions familiar with similar prohibitions.

Round-the-World covers are interesting items and worthy of collection, but it must be understood that they are philatelic creations.

I am more interested in non-philatelic redirected mail upon which additional stamps have been added. I'm sure posters to this website will show examples of what I mean.

This one should be non-philatelic with Perfin "BM" on UK stamps. Unfornately only cover front.

Not as busy as the previous covers.

A re-used cover.

Image

Originally sent from Lancaster & Morecambe to Horsham Sussex on 13 Nov 1945.

Add a layer of sticky paper over the address and re-seal the envelope.
Add another stamp (same) on top of the first stamp.

Sent from Horsham Sussex to London on 19 Nov 1945.

Both addressed to Miss Singleton - (redirection by re-use?).

Hi,

I bought this cover recently:

Image

Image

The cover was mailed from Gopalpur, India on the 12th of October 1902 to Aden and redirected first to London, then to Eastbourne and finally to Groombridge(?). Unfortunately the return address is a bit obscure for me to make out.

I bought the cover for the "reexpedie" marking which is just above "Beale". (My guess is that the marking was applied in Aden, but I am not certain of this.)

There were two short articles about the Aden "reexpedie" marking in The Dhow, p. 23, March 2001. The Edric Druce article was "Aden - The Rarest Marking?" and the second by Gary Brown: "Well the Editor has Two..."

Best wishes,
AndrewG
