The hottest day in 3 years in Sydney yesterday at 41 degrees C. (and that was in the city).

In the outer western suburbs it would have been about 45 C. :?

I'd try a rain dance to send some rain to Australia but it just doesn't work at -30 .

Comes down as snow and is much too bulky to send through the mail.

I don't know how you survive +45.

Must be hard to garden in red hot dust!

Yesterday 43 C in Adelaide, today it topped at 45.7 C, hottest day in 70 years. As I type this it is still 42 outside. Power blackouts, buckled train tracks, a couple of fires etc etc

Forecast for tomorrow is 44 C and predicted to stay over 40 C until next Monday when the temperature should plummet to 39

Don't think I could cope with -30 though, too much of a shock :D

Cheers

For those in countries that still use the old "F" readings, 45.7 = 114.26

5C here today - a "pleasant" winter's day for us...

We're lucky on this bit of coast - doesn't often drop below freezing even though we're quite far North.

Peter,

It's hard to imagine +45 when we're sitting at -25.

The ground is frozen hard as a steel plate and the roads buckle from frost heave.

Still, I'd prefer mine to yours!

Gavin,

100 years ago my paternal great grandparents emmigrated from the west coast of England to Calgary, Alberta and when the temperature gets really cold here on the Canadian prairie I sometimes wish they hadn't.

It's 8.40am here in Sunny Mildura - right now the temperature is 33c or 90F.

The highest recorded temperature here was 47C - maybe we will break the record!

I remember that day well our own temperature guage measured 50C it was that hot the bitumen on the roads melted.

Bob I know my wifes Grandpa never returned to Canada because he said it was too cold but coming to Mildura was an extreme on the other end of the scale :D

Extremes in either direction are Bad.
I used to live in Scotland, where 50 years ago we used to get as good as Canada, but it has eased up a bit over the last few years,,
But I belive a Linesman at My local Club,,STENHOUSEMUIR came down with Hypothermia, wilst on the ground at the local match, this was 2 weeks ago.

at the other end of the scale DOWN here in OZ,its 41 degrees in Melbourne,,at present, the railway cancelled 112 services yesterday because of Buckled Rails,,but our biggest worry is a HOT NORTH WIND and a Bush fire at the same time...not nice at all.so keep all of your collective fingers crossed.thank you very much.

My condolences on your suffering through the extreme heat of the Australian summer.

The Canadian prairie is said to have a temperate climate by which they must mean tempering extreme heat with extreme cold.

Winnipeg can get to +40 in the summer and down past -40 in the winter.

But our hottest summer days are only a short few in Winnipeg and can't compete with the blistering heat in Australia.

Melbourne was actually hotter than Adelaide today - just 43.4 C here :D Latest forecast has similar conditions for the next week.

I'm glad I'm not in Mildura though - always seems hotter there

Bob's got me thinking that Winnipeg would be a nice place to visit :D :D :D

Well it's cooled off a wee bit in old Sydney town (thank God I live near the coast). As I type this at 8:30pm AEDST it's a balmy 24C. in Sydney, in Melbourne it's 34C. and in Adelaide it's 41C.

In Sydney we just don't get super high temp. days end on end. We just get a really bad one (like the 50C. New Year's Day a couple of years ago) then a Southerly wind flies up the East coast and drops temps. very quickly.

Big news about the temperature in Adelaide then Melbourne in the last couple of days due to prolonged high temps. I understand that a private company runs the Melbourne rail network and appears not to have done proper maintenance during winter so that's the reason for the train cancellations. Pretty poor really and a black mark against privatisation in my book.

I hope it gets cooler for you all very quickly :!:

Brisbane here, it's 11pm and a nice 25 degrees yet humidity is was at 85% today which makes it very sticky yet liveable.

Feel sorry for all Melbourne and South Australia stampboarders, the gum must have melted by now.

8 A.M. in Winnipeg

A nice, crisp -25 C this morning with a light snowfall.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could average out our temperatures!

Life would be so much easier if we weren't always fighting the weather.

We had a couple of glorious days just above the freezing mark but are back to -25 C again.

February 2nd - only 3 more months of cold weather!

Today the sun was shining with a few clouds and a warm wind from the south. Temperature is 10°C which is unusual for this time of year.

Well I for one am now curled up end to end - will need to be placed in a drying book with weight applied :D :D :D :D

The great heat continues in Adelaide - expecting 38C today and 40C again by Friday. Finally getting some relief at night though, it's currently just 23 :)

My monkeys would require that I at least brush the snow off the saddle.

Both Britain and Canada are experiencing the coldest weather in years.

We're used to this sort of thing on the Canadian Prairies though.

Happens every year about the same time and we've come to expect it.

The big heat continues over much of eastern Australia.

40 today in Canberra which is usually a few degrees coooler than most places. Will be the same for another two days.

Hard wearing sunnies inside 8) 8) 8)

Can't even imagine 46.4 when we're sitting at -10 and feel quite comfortable at 20 in the summer. It only rarely gets to 40 and then only for a day or two.

There are times when Winnipeg gets down below -40 and I suppose that you, in Australia, would find that hard to imagine.

I hope you don't have to suffer through much more of the extreme heat.

Hi Bob,
I would love -10 right now :D

It's been crazy weather for two weeks now. My garden is all drought tolerant Australian natives and it's dying!

There are fires everywhere around the State tonight, lots of houses have been lost.

Anxious times.

I'm dreading the power bill this quarter, the aircon has been running flat out for two weeks.

Hope all you Victorian stampboarders are safe and sound. South Australia pretty much dodged the bullet today - 41C by 11am then a howling gale brought dust storms and a sudden 10 degree drop in temperature.

Keep cool

The above site says it all. Not just the usual bushfires but many deaths as well.

Here we are stinking hot but we are safe. Our hearts go out to those further south who have suffered so much.

For those who do not know, we in Canberra, on 18 January 2003 lost four people, more than 500 homes and many schools, shops etc etc. At least we did not know it was coming, unlike these poor souls who have been watching it develop for days.

As I loaded up the car at Belgrave Auction yesterday the sky was looking very smokey I guessed there was at least one fire somewhere and it WAS BIG,the wind was blowing almost galeforce, and I knew if a fire started there would be no stopping it,,,it was HOT 47 degrees,

As we head down the hills from Belgrave,,,we met 2 Fire engines on the way up ,,I found out later that a fire had started at Upper Fern Tree Gully,
By the time I got to the shop, the smoke was covering half of the visable sky line, the sun was glowing red,and things were starting to have a red glow to them,
I thought "Sod This, for a game of soldiers" so closed up and went home,,as My place backs onto a Golf Course, and there is a Lot of Bush around it,
Switched on the TV,to get any reports,,got Sky News, but all they kept saying was Major Bush Fires were burning in Melbournes,North East and Northern areas,,WHERE :?: I kept yelling at the TV,but then relised it was SKY and that was SYDNEY based,so they did not know diddly squat,
Anyhow put in a HOT night Sorting through the Boxes of stuff, trying to find the "Cherries" before the GOM do on Monday,,

So far the Death Toll;; is 25 and expected to rise to 40 + and there are at least 8 fires still out of control, but we do have a welcome cooler change, but still no rain,,,its all going to Queensland.

Currently sitting Hong Kong airport lounge and seeing the bad news, and a phone call from my wife saying she has not heard from our son, his wife and three kids living in Kinglake Area where a large number of the town has gone up in flames.

Hopefully they have made a local refuge, as my wife said the wind changed and hit the area very quickly taking out mobile phone towers.

Roads closed into the town.

Nice and sunny in Palmerston North.

A bit warmer than in London and thankfully cooler than in Oz with a temperature of about 25 degrees centigrade.

I liked the earlier comment humourously posted about Mildura's thermometer being kept in the fridge!! Any room left for the beer?

Hi Bob,
Thank you! Thank you,
the larger parcel I asked for on the 24 Jan. arrived today Sun. at 11am, the rain you sent was large enough to form puddles and there may be enough to help slow down some of the bush fires.

Is there any chance of placing a jumbo size order via Express post.

Yesterday the winds were high, as an example a fire started at about 3pm near Churchill (app. 150 km east of Melbourne), after it had a good start the embers were being blown and starting new fires upto 20km. ahead of the main fire, by 8pm fires were starting up near the Victorian coast. Churchill is about 65km. from the coast, this doesn't mean that the fire is 65km long, but we have 6 medium to large fires in the area.

In Victoria we take our hats of to all the volunteers who have been fighting these fires, and hope that those who have not been able to make contact with their loved ones will soon be able to.

Best regards David

So glad that you've had some rain.

We've been watching the news of the heat wave and fires and hoping that you'd get a break.

We have a Churchill in Manitoba as well.

It's about 650 miles north of Winnipeg and situated on the shore of Hudson Bay.

No fear of a fire there.

Gary,

We are bracing ourselves for the worse news

I was the one who turned this thread from simple weather to bushfires so I guess I had best get it back on the rails again.

Before I do, there is "worse news" elsewhere. Glen started this Bushfire thread -

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10817

and the GOM thread http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=6954

also contains the latest dreadful news.

The weather is much cooler here - down from 38.9 this time yesterday to 23.4 now. Unfortunately there is little sign of rain with no 'major rain event' (weather bureau jargon) forecast within the next two weeks.

Cooler everywhere but that is all you can say.

We're having a once in 20 year event in Winnipeg for February - it's raining!

If only we could share it with Victoria and NSW.

Still raining.

Streets and roads are like skating rinks and it's even difficult to stay upright while walking.

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed from Winnipeg west to the Saskatchewan border - something over 200 miles.

Clear and cold right now (7:09am) and 14 degrees. Supposed to get up to 48 degrees today. Everywhere around us had snow last night but seems we are in a "bubble" and it passed over Pueblo. Should be a nice day..... :D

In Winnipeg tonight it's snowing and -5 C .

That makes our weather, at least for tonight, comparable to Pueblo.

Winnipeg is still sitting at -5C with light snow.

This is getting boring.

Winnipeg has a rather stable climate.

Calgary, on the other hand, can go from -20C to +20C in an afternoon if there's a Chinook wind blowing over the mountains.

The television weather used to ask a native called Walking Eagle who lived near Rockie Mountain House what the weather would be like.

He would be correct much more often than the government forecasters by looking at the way animals were acting, the growth of moss on trees, etc.

I'm sure he's long gone by now - that was 40 years ago
