Makes you wish you could go and get one to bring home, doesnt it? lol. Its a shame all right. I really want to visit the Arizona base where the US keeps all of its old outdated aircraft all wrapped up ready for use again. I hear that is a real great thing to see. Acres and acres of old aircraft mostly in pristine condition. Al

Al.i would recommend a visit to Davis Monthan AFB in Arizona,it's an awesome site the first time you cast your eye's over 4000-5000 planes sitting in neat rows
Image

The Pima museum next to the base run bus tours around the stored aircraft most days and tickets can be purchased at the museum front desk.
There's also the various scrap yards adjacent to the base where you can still see lots of old piston engined machines either being reduced to scrap or under rebuild to flight status. Also Tucson airport just along the road always has something worth looking at.
The best way to see the whole place is from the air, there are a number of companies at Tucson who'll hire you out a Cessna 172 or similar (the prices are pretty reasonable) and a few circuits around the base will produce some great images.

A few more from Davis Monthan....General Dynamics F-111's,some from RAF Upper Heyford near Oxford (the ones at the back with the UH tail code) plus some from Cannon AFB in New Mexico (CC tail code) I think the Australians still operate a couple of squadrons but all the Yank ones are long retired.

The sad remains of the once mighty B52 fleet, these are the early C,D,E and F models, many of which would have seen service in South East Asia.

If you go to google map and type in Davis-Monthan air force base you can see them all lined up.

German registered (D-CXXX) Douglas DC-3/C-47B of Air Service Berlin coughs and splutters into life at Schoenefeld in 2006.This machine was delivered to the USAAF on 16/03/45 (serial 44-76540) and after the war found its way onto the civilian market.I first saw this at Glasgow airport in Scotland in July 1970 when she was on the British Register with a company called Rig Air.It was nice to see her again 36 years down the line....still belching smoke :D

The SR-71 "Blackbird":

Image

A product of the Lockheed "skunkworks" this was the ultmate manned photographic reconnaisance aircraft.

With a service ceiling of 17 miles and a speed in excess of Mach 3.2 it was invincible. Over 4,000 missiles have been launched against it, without any success.

It had tapered sides and minimal vertical surfaces, added Caesium to the special jet fuel, and used radar reducing paint. Unfortunately, due to the unusual exhaust plume, it has one of the largest radar cross sections of any plane, ever.

Due to friction at high speed it's length increased by 1 ft and during fuel refilling on the ground it leaked like a sieve due to the built in expansion joint gaps. They had to kept refilling right until it was time to taxi.

It was de-commissioned in 1986 but saw brief service in the first Gulf war to help locate mobile Scud launchers in Iraq.

Hi beardmore10,

What a GREAT thread you have started, fantastic images.

If you ask the pilots flying all these machines what is their greatest moment in aviation, I am sure they would like me, it was their first SOLO.

VH-RAM was a Cessna 152

And one more from me. It has been announced that this Caribou (about to be decommissioned from the RAAF) will be placed in the Vietnam Hall of the Australian War Memorial here in Canberra

Image

The following is from the AWM web site -
The De Haviland Canada (DHC) Caribou has been the workhorse of the Australian military for more than forty years. Its main operational role is in support of the Australian Army. Although it is slow and noisy, the Caribou is a versatile transport aircraft, capable of short take-offs and landings on unprepared runways. Its rear-opening ramp doors allow personnel and cargo to be unloaded quickly. The Caribou was ordered in the early 1960s to replace the reliable, though aging, Dakota aircraft.

The RAAF received its first Caribous in May in February 1964 when the first batch of eighteen aircraft was handed over at the DHC plant at Downsville, near Toronto. The aircraft were then flown from Canada to Australia. In July 1964 Caribous being ferried from Canada to Australia were diverted to Butterworth, Malaysia, where they became the basis of RAAF, Transport Flight Vietnam (RTFV), which later became 35 Squadron. Further Caribous were delivered to Vietnam, while those that reached Australia went to 38 Squadron.

In addition to their work in Australia, from 1965 to 1975 RAAF Caribous have subsequently been used in Papua and New Guinea, and flew "mercy" flights to refugees in East Timor in 1975. Between 1975 and 1978 they operated with the United Nations Military Observer Group, supplying observation posts along the India-Pakistan border. More recently, the Caribous flew famine-relief operations to Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya in 1997, tsunami relief to Papua New Guinea in 1999, and have since been used in East Timor and the Solomon Islands.

Specifications

A4 DHC-4 Caribou
Type: light tactical transport
Entered service: 1964
Crew: 2, capable of carrying 32 troops
Wing span: 29.15 m
Length: 22.13 m
Weight (laden): 12,927 kg
Speed: max. 348km/h; economical cruise 293km/h
Armament: nil

Heard an unusual plane yesterday, dashed outside and one of these was on its way to Canberra Airport. Saw it later on its way to Avalon. (I presume)

They may be common to others but this was my first sighting.

Thats a nice shot of the american C-17. Canada just took posession of her first couple of those as well. Large and fast. Make shorter work of transporting troops and equip as the C-130 fleet gets older.

Thanks

I selected that photo because it is an Aussie plane which was on display at the Avalon air show a while back. However my favourite photo is this one from Wikipedia -

To the best of my knowledge we ordered four of these workhorses and all are now in service.

There is something about a Lockheed Constellation. This pic is of Lockheed-1049-Super-Constallation-VH-EAO-EN at Essendon (Melbourne) International Airport in 1958 prior to the Round the World Flight.

International Airport????????????????????

I believe there is still one flying in Australia while being restored. Based in N.S.W. the last I heard. Saw it at a Flying Day at the Point Cook R.A.A.F. Museum some years back.

The British 'Air Displays' issue is referred to and pictures in an earlier message.

Wanting to produce some maximum cards and finding postcards difficult to get hold of I decided to produce my own as we know a relatively cheap digital printing company. So I looked on flickr for some 'free to use' images. But I was surprised by finding this image, which I instantly bookmarked to use:

Image

Yes, the design agency appointed by Royal Mail found a picture on flickr to use for the 1st class stamp!
(Acknowledgement: Photo by Leigh Harris, Dartmouth 2006)

A couple of others, especially as the RAF Falcons parachutists don't appear to be on ANY postcards, and the Vulcan, pictures of which appeared earlier.

Image Image
Photo acknowledgements: Falcons - photo flickr.com/photos/smudge9000 - Biggin Hill 2008;
Vulcan - Sgt David S Nolan USAF, Mildenhall Air Fete '85.

(and yes, I do have some spare for sale!)

I like that one :!:

Is that an Avro Anson in the background :?: As a kid in the 50s I often rode my bike to Bankstown and watched with envy as all those rich people (everyone except me) did aerobatics in Tiger Moths or Puss Moths. The ultimate trip, however, was a trip in an Avro Anson or a Hudson over Sydney Harbour.

Kevin, certainly looks like an Anson behind the Connie....i photographed this Anson at the British Columbia Aviation Museum whilst passing through Victoria International airport in October 2004...

Image

This is Anson (K8786) plus parts from another Anson (FP846) used to rebuild this machine to static exhibit status, the guys there did a great job.

Canadian aircraft stamps issue with one (bottom left) depicting an Anson.

Image

.......and this Anson N4877 (G-AMDA) is now on permanent display at Duxford.First came across this machine at Staverton airport in England in June 1974,it eventually moved to Duxford and was rebuilt over a number of years, another fine example of the restorers hard work and dedication.
