Slayer - you'll have a ball.

I went to "The Bakery", Perth city, in the weekend. There was a benefit gig on for Dave, a sound man who had his van full of sound gear stolen in Melbourne.

I had a great night, cheap drinks and the best of the bands were the "Kill Devil Hills" (not as heavy as they sound) and "Mink Mussel Creek" who were superb.

I don't know who I'll be seeing next, but the wife and myself have booked our tickets for Southbound early next year. There are a few bands I'll be looking forward to seeing such as The Hives, Franz Ferdinand, Gomez, The Cat Empire and Liam Finn.

Cheers,

Ewen :)

Mrs Mills (how I get them);
and Dusty Springfield - pissed as a tick one New Years night!!

Sugarplum,

If you signed up for the pre-sale then they are now available to purchase. I think once all the pre-sale's are gone then they will go on general sale.

To be honest, I'm not really sure how it works - my wife sorted it out. Apparently we have a ballot of four.

Cheers,

Ewen

Just saw Buddy Guy and Derek Trucks Band (current Allman Brothers guitarist) this past weekend at our local jazz and blues festival along with many others.

In the past (sometimes distant) have seen

Supertramp
David Bowie
Kansas (Hammersmith Odeon in London on my high school trip - still my favorite all time concert)
Doobie Brothers
Chicago
Bryan Adams
Pink Floyd

And a multitude of Canadian bands and solo musicians that no-one outside of Canada has ever heard of.

Will be seeing Sir Elton in Moncton, New Brunswick in a couple of weeks. He's well past his prime, but still couldn't pass up the opportunity.

Eric

Just remembered two more (from looking through other people's posts.)

Nazareth back in the 70s (when I still had long hair and bushy sideburns. I couldn't hear properly out of one ear for a week after that concert!) and
Styx

However, my major regret is never seeing Queen live. (my favorite band growing up). I'd also like to see Earth, Wind and Fire and the Brian Setzer Band (swing) and they're both still on my "to do" list as they're still out there more or less intact.

Cheers - great thread!

Eric

I was hoping to see Australian Pink Floyd next month in Tampa (Florida) but it's the same day as my friend's wedding. Who gets married on a Thursday evening anyway?

Scott out.

Richard Wright died yesterday, so concert may be cancelled.

I can't own up to seeing many live acts - and certainly no dead ones!

However I do recall seeing a few musicals - Cats and The Phantom of the Opera being most often seen.

Earlier this year owing to a throat infection Celine Dion's Brisbane concert was postponed. Fortunately for us it turned out, as her originally scheduled concert was to be held before we arrived. My wife, her mother and a friend fortunately obtained tickets for her rescheduled concert (and returned to our Gold Coast apartment at about 4am the next day!) but trying to obtain information let alone tickets for her rescheduled concert once we learned of the cancellation proved to be difficult.

It was only thaks to a stamp collector living in Brisbane that we found out about the change of dates!

My wife has seen Cliff Richard twice in Christchurch.

I do remember seeing Buce Forsyth (nice to see you - to see you nice!) appear in Christchurch many years ago - he was always good for a laugh! Whilst he is about as old as Tina Turner - delightfully shown by Margoz I doubt that he is as good looking. Mind you he was always associated with attractive dollybirds on his shows so maybe that helped keep him young at heart?

David.

Hi David,

I remember watching the Generation Game as a kid in Feilding, where I lived for ten loooong years (15 km's out of Palmerston North for all the barbarians who don't know where Feilding is).

You should add your musicals to this thread that Norm started;

http://www.stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=8196

My Dad is a big Cliff Richard fan - apparently my uncle is/was president of the Cliff Richard fan club in Brisbane (please don't tell anyone though - 'tis a bit embarrasing  )

BTW, I have enjoyed your posts on the "Exhibition" thread.

Cheers,

Ewen :D

OK- this is a slight cheat but this morning I've managed to get 2 tickets for AC/DC's UK tour next year- the whole tour sold out in under 30 minutes and within 20 minutes tickets priced at £40 were on ebay for £150.

Am I as excited as a big bag full of very excited things...err YEP, and feeling very pleased with myself too.

Sherro

I've heard this may be the last AC/DC proper album and tour (though how anyone actually knows!) and that they plan a huge tour of Australia and NZ later next year.

The new album is excellent and probably the best album since Back in Black

We saw The Who in the Hunter Valley last night (Hope Estate).

What a great venue and fantastic concert.

Drove up and stayed at a very funky Cessnock pub on Saturday afternoon.

Got a shuttle out to the winery and had cocktails and lovely nibbles from 5 to 8 and watch the sun go down over the hills with a few  glasses of local bubbly then wandered down through the masses to great seats in time to see the too old dogs strutting their stuff.

We got back to the pub in time for a drink and game of pool before closing time.

Not my pics but do convey the atmosphere!

At my primary school fete we had the Bee Gees they were only little kids then.

Years later in Sydney (in my lunch hour) saw the Rolling Stones performing in Hyde Park, don't know why they would be there.

Went to see the Beatles didn't hear a thing, all the girls kept screaming and it drowned out the whole show :(

Saw Hair Brilliant

Last show I saw was Andre Rieu and it was great but enjoyed the DVD more, what does that mean?

Good day,

A nice thread to bring back some memories :) . Over the last 28 years, I've seen:

ZZ Top (seven times)
The Stones (four times)
Aerosmith (four times)
Gary Moore (four times)
Pink Floyd (twice; perfect)
The Stray Cats  (twice)
Guns 'N' Roses (original lineup, not the lame reunion thing; twice)
Brian Adams (twice)
AC/DC  (twice)
Metallica
Queensryche
Whitesnake (with Steve Vai; impressive guitar work)
Poison
The Pogues (with Joe Strummer RIP)
Foreigner
Huey Lewis and The News (twice)
Elton John  (had no choice)
Texas
Eric Clapton (about as lame as can be)
Joe Cocker
The Beach Boys
The Allman Brothers
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
Faith No More
Nine Inch Nails
The J. Geils Band
Ray Charles (very moving show)
Chuck Berry (worst show I've ever seen; this guy is very special  )
Iron Maiden
Anthrax
David Lee Roth
The Scorpions
Manfred Mann's Earth Band

I'm sure I forgot a few.

Michael

Edit: forgot Deep Purple and Mountain, Def Leppard, Santana and The Black Crowes (twice  ).

Doing what I do I get to work at a few concerts. Some I wouldn't go to but I have to.

My first concert was at the Melbourne Show Grounds in the 70's for SLADE. LINDIFARNE was the support act. Two complete opposites, but they won the crowd over.

Others include: Russell Morris.
Wacko Jacko (Working)
Barbara Streisand
Cliff Richard
Budgie
Jimmy BARNES. (Played a gig at work in the lunch room)
Ricky Martin (Working. All the girls swapped with the rostered males for that one)

"The Who" on the weekend here were superb. After 3½ hours of boozing beforehand in a VIP tent, even better than you'd expect.

2.25 hours of totally ear splitting sound.

We were sitting so close to the stage my ears were ringing for the next 24 hours!

I have always believed Peter Townsend is THE most distinctive guitarist in rock music, and he proved it live.

How on earth those windmill actions play anything sure beats me - but they do. :)

I have all the Who albums, and his solo albums and that guitar is totally unmistakable.

Roger Daltry is about 65 now and boy I pray I'll be in that shape then .. his falsetto may be packing up, but he and Townsend have been playing since they were at school and are like an old married couple on stage. :D

Oddly most of the crowd were not even close to being born born when these guys starting having hits ..... it was quite a curious crowd demographic.

They flew to MEL next night to close the Formula 1 Grand Prix, where these clips were taken

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fDN7f0_KLM

And this is far better quality but takes more bandwidth -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGw-pw8RS3w

And the same song - from when Pete had hair, Roger could still play Harmonica well, and Keith Moon was VERY much alive:

Thanks for the Who links, they bring back memories of my misspent youth on Wardour Street in the 1960's.

Not much of a concert goer myself, though I did see Stéphane Grappelli once. I also saw Richard Hickox conduct Tännhauser about a year before his untimely death.

Speaking of untimely death, my brother was working at a pub in London in the early 80s as a chef and shared a beer or 7 close to closing with Bon Scott. less than a week later Bon was dead. :(

I guess you mean "the early '80's", as Bon passed away 19 February 1980

Having worked in the music business at that time, I think it it is fair to say Bon's brain (and those of many of his comrades) from 1970 to 1980 was essentially dead for that entire decade.

We saw Andre at the football stadium late last year too but even in the front seat, outside the field, it was really a bit far although we did enjoy it! He will be at a better venue out there later this year though.
We also enjoyed the DVD and have several of them.
Next time we might pay to see it on cable TV

Too many to mention over the years but I saw Leonard Cohen live in Sydney last month and it was the best concert I could ever imagine, as did everyone else that was there.

A 75 year old man who gave nearly 3 hours of top entertainment and the back-up band was unbelievable. His whole world tour has been the same ,from the reports I've read.

I caught them in April at Birmingham (UK)- stunningly good and my 12 year old son said it was the best concert he'd ever seen (he may be only 12 but he has seen a few!)- for me, having first seen them in 1981 at Monsters of Rock in the UK (and numerous times since), this tour has been the best for quite a while and the set list didnt disappoint either- classics, odd newbie, classics (I wouldnt want to spoil the suprise by listing them!)- pure joy.

We can't wait. It's a shame we live in rural NSW and could only get tickets in Melbourne though! That adds a bit to the cost of the tickets!

Im having trouble remembering a lot of bands. Was a bit of a wild child myself 8)
Some that I can recall

Led Zepplin (brilliant)
Deep Purple (2 rows from the front, had Mark Bolin as lead at that stage, ears rang for days)
Alice Cooper (welcome to my nightmare tour, simply amazing show)
Pink Floyd (brilliant)
Slade (Lindifarm as support,we all thought Slade were crap,Lindifarm brilliant )
Eagles
Neil Diamond (we supplied the piano stool for that show) 8)
Rolling Stones (70s)
Fleetwood Mack
Linda Rondstat (I think lol )
Mung Jerry was a support act at one concert, very different but love his stuff..

EwenS mentioned that he saw The Bakery in Perth recently..Boy that brings back some very fond memories. As a group of youngish boozers ,we would watch Bakery at every oportunity just about every weekend at Perth Pubs...
Saw many many more acts but time has dimmed my memory..

Bruce, memory is dimmed by the alcohol consumed whilst seeing the '70's. It catches up with you!

BTW, sorry to be pedantic, but it's Lindisfarne, and I love them. Fog on The Tyne is a classic.

Sherro,

Yeah mate, too much good living in the 70s has taken its toll on me  8) I dont think you are being pedantic pointing out the correct name of a group from so long ago.I only saw them the one time.

Can remember they were so much better than Slade on the night,Lindisfarne that is !Most of the crowd ended up jeering Slade and calling for Lindisfarne to come back on.It didnt happen of course...

I can also remember quite often watching an Eastern States band called Limelight, who played a brilliant version of Americas - Horse with no name..

Very interesting posts --

My current favorite, and the only one with a philatelic connection, was T-Bone Burnett with Marc Ribot, concurrent to the Washington 2006 show in DC.

I've seen Bob Dylan 3 times, once each in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. There were several of the same tunes played at each concert, almost all in different arrangements. "Maggie's Farm" has to be my favorite of those, and "All Along the Watchtower," with that violinist mentioned before.

Ray Davis (Kinks) did a solo tour 10 years ago, small venues, lots of funny stories and "Waterloo Sunset".

Bob Marley, Luther Allison, and a few others. The band I've seen the most times would be the Sun Ra Arkestra, a dozen or more times. Still occasionally playing under the leadership of Marshall Allen. Interestingly, one of their latest concert was promoted by Derek Trucks.

And if I had to choose just one 'desert island disc,' it would be the aforementioned East-West, with Bloomfield, Butterfield, Bishop and the rest.

My first concert was Diana Ross, she was amazing and one I will never forget. From there I have seen Elton John, The Platters, Sylistics, Delphonics, R Kelly, Manhattens, BB King, Prince, Tavares, Chi-Lites, Rightious Brothers, Luther Vandross, Barry White, Kenny G-who by the way, puts on a great concert, loved him, one of my favorite concerts. Kool & the Gang, Blue Majic maybe more but I just cant remember. I will have to think about that some more. Love the oldies. I am coming back to this cause I fogot to mention that I saw a concert years ago, Tower of Power. I mention it because if you ever get a chance to see this extrodinary band do it. They were great. Oh and I also saw LL Kool J, he was so late coming on, like 4 hours late, on a work night, that I almost left before he arrived. I am glad that I waited though, good concert.

Thinking about this topic brought back lots of memories. I've been going to concerts, whenever not too expensive, for 40 years.

In the 1960s I saw:
Simon & Garfunkel
Ian & Sylvia
The Righteous Brothers
The Lettermen
The Youngbloods
The Kingston Trio

During the 1970s I saw:
The Carpenters
John Denver
The Eagles
Dave Mason
Billy Joel
Pete Seeger
Judy Collins
Firefall
Heart
The Gatlin Brothers
Waylon Jennings
Melanie
Sly and the Family Stone

During the 1980s and 1990s I saw:
Arlo Guthrie
Hall & Oates
Ben E. King

And in the last couple of years I have seen:
Orleans (remnants)
Survivor (remnants)
Hootie & the Blowfish

Thanks for refreshing my memories.

Jerry S
