I collect demography philately which includes census, family planning and population (stamps, covers, fdc, stationary, slogan cancels, etc). I have come across 3 slogan cancels with from Australia and New Zealand with census and 1 slogan from New Zealand with World Population Year. Were any other Australia or New Zealand slogans with demographic themes? Also I would like to see (or buy or trade for) the complete slogans of the ones pictured here. Any info appreciated.

Just checked through some old lists of slogans that I have, and found some listed that may be useful to add to your list,,I do not have any Pictures I am afraid,
But this is the written descriptions.

CENSUS DAY
30th June.
every person counts.

used in Sydney 21.6.1966.

another one with a triangle with people inside,( house perhaps?)
Census 76
30 June,

used Brisbane,Adelaide,& Sydney,june 1976.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA
CELEBRATES
THE FIRST MILLION
OF ITS POPULATION

used Perth.2/3. 3. 1971.

These lists I have were compiled in 1976 and 1982, so there could well be more,?

Australia has a census every 5 years. Next one is, I think, next year. I am not sure if they still even use slogan cancellations here now. I think it is just that horrible ink jet obliterations.

However, I suspect you could find Census cancellations from at least the 1950s up to the 1980s or 1990s.

It is not an area I focus on particularly (slogan cancels). I do, however, have one I particularly like on a passion of mine, wartime censored covers.

Image

The cancel date is exactly one month after Pearl Harbour and the only people planning to 'visit sunny Australia' were Japanese (never made it) and Amercian soldiers (came here in droves but had other things on thier minds than tourism).

Further to Mrbogglers post I have attached photos of the two slogans he referred to which might be of assistance.
Photos are from "Australian Slogan Cancellations 1917 -1988 Volume 1" by R C Occleshaw which is a great reference book for slogans.

Hello hughvic2,
have a look at http://www.i-ng.org/index.php?id=mst. Especially MSt30 should be most interesting for you.

Another interesting one, shown nationally in 1957, again in 1960 and 1961, and for one day in 1986. :D

Good question. My reference (Occleshaw Vol 2 page 141) states that it was used on April 1st 1986 in Adelaide for less than an hour. Was some wag at the PO bored on April fools day?

That explains it. Now, could we call it's use legitimate, or not? :D

Back in 1959, Laurie Franks published a catalogue - Postal History Catalogue of New Zealand, Vol. 2 - Slogan Postmarks. It should list everything to that date, and will show you potential items.

I wonder if there were any England v Australia test matches close or coming up at the time, if so .then it could be called legitimate usage.

Not likely in April. Too late for Australian season and too early for English.

Hi Hughvic2

I collect Aussie postal slogans and have an Excel spreadsheet showing over 1000 different slogans - primarily based on books of Robin Occleshaw mentioned in earlier comments. Happy to send to you (and anyone else if interested) for you to look through for slogans that fit your theme. It's only 130kb in size. Couldn't figure out how to attach here (I'm a budding luddite!)

King Tut,

Welcome to Stampboards!

I already have your spreadsheet which you sent after our meeting at Nunawading Stamp Fair in October.

I can recommend this list to everyone as it has a heap more listings of the more modern slogans and is a great addition to the Occleshaw books.

Thanks for your efforts Laurence.

Cheers

Geoff

One could be forgiven for thinking we no longer have slogans! Everything seems to get the ink jet these days!! I am pleased that we do still have slogans... even if they usually come with a smudged ink jet cancel sprayed over the top.

I have seen a (small) variety of slogans on my mail since I began collecting in the mid 90s... interestingly we have even had commercial advertisements in our slogans (eg Ford's birthday).

Whilst Australia Post introduced a new slogan design about a decade ago, which includes a circular location part attached to the slogan, it seems that the South Coast Mail Centre down here in the Illawarra NSW seems to like using the old slogans... I can still post a letter today and get the old slogan "If you really care, you'll write" ... it will always be true so I bet they will use it for years to come... if they decide not to phase out slogan cancels that is!! Interestingly the SCMC seems to have two slogans in use at any one time ... but not all mail with stamps gets the slogan postmark.. some sadly only get the inkjet :(

On the topic of Australian cancellations, it would be nice if SCMC and SWLF bought some new date/time slugs for their tractor postmarks.. the digits are all damaged and hard to read!

More to the the point why would we EVER want to sponsor pommie immigrants for Gawd's sakes!

They got their passage for 10 quid and they wanted more?!

Just had a flick through my little box of postally used covers...

We had a slogan for Autism awareness... I dont think that fits your criteria but thought I would mention it in case you were. I can organise a scan if you want to see it.

"Autism. 1 in 100"

Or what about this, its relevant to where people live:

"Moving? Redirect Your Mail."

As the Autism slogan gives incidence of a condition in the population, I would suggest that it is eminently suitable for a demography thematic collection. :D

I obtained a copy of occleshaws supplement dated Dec 1982 listing Aus slogans to that date, thought I might collect if I get bored with what I'm doing, although I've not seen them cheap (I'm in UK) any hints?

Because of ink jet cancellations, collecting Australian slogans is now like collecting a dead country.

The various catalogues group them into state based and national issues, and short and long term showing of the slogan.

My advice if you are starting out is to select a period, say 1980's or 1970's and just collect within that.

I will have a look through my collection and see if I have duplicates. If I do, I will ask you for your mailing address. I can't send emails through this board to ask you privately.

Another one that has popped up that wasn't on the list:

TOURIST DEVELOPMENT WEEK SEPT. 16-22 "SEE QUEENSLAND FIRST"

Was on a 1974 cover from Rockhampton.

Australia has just had a census- Aug.9. I don't know if there were any special postmarks, but since this represents the centenary of censuses in Australia, it's a miracle there wasn't a stamp issue.

A quick question for those who collect slogans or use them in their exhibits - do you keep the whole cover or on piece?

I have tended to collect the whole cover but have quite a few on piece only - but only mark off from my list (count those) that I have on cover - is this being too fussy given that most of the stamps are common anyway.

Another has popped through the mail to add to the spreadsheet...

NORTHGATE MAIL CENTRE QLD 4013

Anyone apart from nightwatchman been able to find the latest QEII visit slogan he showed?

A couple of questions:
Do people think it would be worthwhile scanning the slogans up in this thread as a reference?
Aussie slogans are boring compared to some of the UK - would there be an interest to create a thread for non-Aussie slogans?

Laurence,

I have a small ongoing collection of both "on piece" and also on complete envelope.
I find that a lot of people at our stampclub happily give me, or sell to me at very cheap prices, slogans "on piece" and I have found that some I don't have on envelope I have on piece.
Envelopes are a bit cumbersome to store but I put them alphabetically in Rivers shoe boxes (they are wider that most) and stack them one on top of the other on the shelf.
I'm still working on the "on piece" storage and am about to have a look at them now as its supposed to get to 40 degrees today in Melbourne.
Keep up the good work with your updates.

Cheers & a Happy New Year to you and yours

Geoff

PS: Both the following were given to me at last club meeting and not sure if you have seen these slogans yet :

Ski from Bright
Taxed A Dandenong Letters Centre Vic 31..

I have a large selection of all states (fewer of WA) slogan cancellations up to about 1990 on piece and on cover. I have not kept common ones, but I can fill want lists either on a swap basis or purchase. If you are interested email me.

That one is "BLOOD DONORS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED".

The "OBSERVE / SUNDAY" slogan is certainly uncommon. It was in use at G.P.O.s in all States for one week only, commencing 10 September 1932.

This slogan contravened the section of the Constitution dealing with religious liberty, and was withdrawn once this was brought to the attention of the Postmaster General.

I can thank the excellent Australian Slogan Cancellations 1917-1988 (Two vols by Robin Occleshaw) for this info.

Slogans, of Australia at least, usually represent amazing value for money; many are as rare as numeral and c.d.s. relatives, and generally are more interesting. Topical subjects abound.

They are on my short list of "what next to collect"; but on complete cover only I recommend.

Some regional ones. These are all NSW, but Victorian towns in particular were good at promoting their events through slogan cancellations on mail. Some ran annually for many years - the Cooma and Bowral ones for example.
